Former President Bush scheduled to fly on jet that crashed

12:33 PM CST on Monday, November 22, 2004

Associated Press

HOUSTON -- Former President George Bush has suspended a trip to Ecuador because the jet he was going to use crashed Monday morning in Houston.

AP

President Bush spoke last week at the dedication of the Clinton Presidential Library.
Three crewmembers died in the accident during foggy weather.

The private jet clipped a light pole and crashed on the Beltway at Cullen near Hobby Airport.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Roland Herwig says the Gulfstream flight originated at Dallas Love Field.

The plane’s registered owner is Jet Place of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Former President Bush, who lives in Houston, was scheduled to take part in a business conference in Ecuador.

According to the former President's spokesman, he was on the way to Hobby Airport when he learned a plane had crashed. He didn't know the plane was his until he arrived.

President Bush had flown with the three crewmembers before and he released the following statement: "I am deeply saddened to learn of the plane crash this morning. I have flown with the crew before and knew them well. I join in sending my heartfelt condolences to each and every member of their families."

The FBI is sending an investigative team to Houston as a courtesy, but FBI spokesman Bob Doguim says there is no reason to believe foul play was involved in the crash.

Yes, the statement made by his office confirms this.

Anyone on board that is connected to the Clintons?

The FoxNews report about a half hour ago said that former President George HW Bush was scheduled to either be on that flight, or another one later, but he changed his schedule--I'm not remembering exactly what it was, but I recall wondering if this was deliberate...

It sounds like pilot error. Given that it's Nov. 22, I hope so, although my heart goes out to the crew. We don't need any more conspiracy theories swirling around.

Yes, prayers for all concerned, and for 41's safety.

I'll bet that NTSB team will soon have augmentation from the U.S. Secret Service. I doubt they're conspiracy theorists, but they also don't believe in coincidences.

When your brain much more faster than your fingers, accidents are bound to happen.

"Electic": noun, computer virus found in blue state voting machines.

Did you hear it was Bush 41 & Co. that had chartered the plane and were familiar with its crew.

HOUSTON - A private jet that was en route to Houston to pick up former President Bush (news - web sites) clipped a light pole and crashed Monday as it approached Hobby Airport in thick fog, killing all three people aboard.

It doesn't matter who it was picking up. Turn on the Weather Channel and look at the weather in central and southern/eastern Texas. This whole area has been getting hammered by bad weather (rain, thunderstorms, flooding, etc.), and thick fog has been all over the place. It's fun to play the conspiracy game, but planes clip poles while trying to land in bad weather more often than you think.

Speaking of weather, anybody who lives down around Victoria has my sympathy, they were saying around 12-15 inches of rain since saturday.

There's something about this that has bugged me since I saw the first (pulled) thread on the subject this morning.

The crashed aircraft was supposedly going to ferry Bush 41 to Ecuador for a conference, presumably a conference held under the auspices of the government down there and/or the US government. Since this was "presumably" an official function, why would an ex-President be using privately-chartered transportation to get to the event? If one-star general military officers and lowly congresscritters are authorized to use "VC"-type US government-owned VIP aircraft for official trips, shouldn't a former President rate the same treatment as well?

Did the downed aircraft have a US government tail number? And why was GHWB flying essentially commercial on government business?

I'd like to think he was trying to be a good Conservative and and to use non-government resources when possible. If he's only taking two people with him (an aide and a Secret Service agent), then there's no point in taking anything bigger than this aircraft.

Not to mention, that even if it was a government/USAF plane, it could have just as easily clipped a tall tower in thick fog.

no, Bush 41 was going to Ecuador for a business meeting, NOT an official gov't thing. So, I private jet makes sense

The plane was about 1-1/2 miles from Hobby's Runway 4

Typical of the Chronic: print "facts" without checking. The distance is closer to 3-3/4 miles. Couldn't the reporter at least have looked at a map?
