Bump to that. I don't like Gonzalez's stance on this, and for this reason alone wouldn't nominate him, but this is an issue we're stuck with if we voted for Bush. Fortunately, the ban is dead in the House anyway.

I don't doubt that we agree. But I have to wonder sometimes why it seems to have been so easy to get CCW passed. Are we winning or are they sucking us into the trap?
A little paranoia, is all. I'll be okay in the morning. ;-)

This guy is turning out to be a statist bum.The guy is a real piece of work. He favors affirmative action, too. And to think that he's a possible Bush SCOTUS nominee.

I understand your question and I'll try to give my understanding of the issue of people in politics.
Assuming GWB when Governor had his sights on the WH then he must act and make decisions to both stay Governor until such time as the time is right to run and also he must take into consideration that certain issues usually disqualify a candidate for a national run for office within the GOP as only those considered conservative enough will win the nomination as only those liberal enough will win the Democrat nomination. After the nomination they all move to the middle as I suspect you know.
After the WH what can one run for? He does not have to remain as conservative as he did to win the nomination or remain Governor of a state like Texas however. For future consideration among the elite, and I can describe the elite for you if you wish, he has to act in a certain way, that is, put the world before the USA in many considerations and keep a lid on the power of common people. Keep them heavily taxed, use the military for international purposes, stay in the UN, concede to the wishes of the Democrats like AWB to gain favors to do the work of the GOP. Sign bills like CFR to help keep people like Ross Perot off the ballot in the future.
GWB is a skull and bones member, like John Kerry, and with that honor there comes a responsibility to the elite who came before them and will come after. They are soldiers in their own world. I just don't expect GWB to always act in the common persons best interest. If he does it is because it is a shared interest or it is imperative in our national interest to do so.
I must say though, in the balance, electing Kerry or nearly anyone else on the national political scene besides GWB would not have been better than the outcome we have today. We need to keep GWB and his administration apprised of our positions to help him decide to do the right thing for our Constitution and our nation. I ask this though, if GWB both signs into law a new version of AWB and an amnesty plan for criminal aliens, is he listening to us or is he acting on behalf of the elite?

You think Tom Delay controls Congress? Keep whistling, -- & dreaming.Perhaps not, but the NRA won this election for Bush, and the NRA helped a large number of Senators and Representatives get elected or re-elected, based on their avowed SUPPORT for RKBA.
While I don't advocate declaring victory, it's a long, long road from where were at now to a renewed AWB.

"Can anyone show me the positive results from the FBI's access to library records?" Now, now, citizen. You know better than to ask silly questions like that. The all-powerful God-state is looking out for you -- never doubt this.
Keep talking like that and we may have to gift you with a "re-education vacation". For your own good, of course.

. He knows that Congress will never renew the AWB but he can remove the issue from the Democrats, gun grabbers, and the media by saying "I'll sign it if Congress passes it" but knowing full well that it will never happen. Are you calling Bush a liar?

He also says he will do nothing to disturb or try to overturn Roe vs. Wade. Is this the kind of Attorney General that conservatives (other then Republibots) want?

Never mind the Second Amendment. Why should we expect the Attorney General to enforce that? That wouldn't be PC.

"As far as I could tell, Ashcroft was not a supporter of the AWB." I don't remember him speaking on the issue at all. Since he worked for Bush, and Bush was for it, then I'd guess he'd be on Bush's side.
The fact that he didn't say anything about it suggests that he was not a supporter of the President's point of view. When you agree, you say so. When you don't, you're a team player by keeping your mouth shut on the issue (after giving the President your best advice.)
So if Ashcroft disagreed with the President on the assault weapons ban, it is very likely that he would just not say anything about it.
