MIAMI (AP) _ A federal judge has set a Monday trial date for the claims of a dozen people who said they were wrongly assaulted by federal officers during the raid that removed Elian Gonzalez from his family's home.
The plaintiffs say they were innocent bystanders who were gassed and beaten outside the home during the early morning raid on April 22, 2000.
U.S. District Judge Michael Moore set the trial date Friday.
"I think the public's going to be surprised that elderly people were gassed while praying the rosary," said Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, which represents 11 of the plaintiffs.
The federal government's attorney did not return a message seeking comment Friday.
Elian was one of three survivors of a November 1999 shipwreck that killed his mother and others fleeing Cuba. He was turned over to his Miami relatives while his custody situation was resolved.
The raid took place after government officials said the family refused to return the boy so he could be taken back to his father in Cuba.

The ironic thing is that "Little Havana" is no longer majority Cuban. Lots of Central Americans (Hondurans especially) living there these days. Most Cubans have moved on to Coral Gables, Kendall, South Miami, and Pembroke Pines.
The second generation has no interest in returning, except as investors. The old generation is dying off and will (sadly) never see a free Cuba.

HAve you ever heard Michael Savage's "news report" on the Reno raid against Elian? It's classic.
Ex-Senator Bob Smith (R,NH) tried to help Elian and his Miami relatives to make sure his rights were respected. All persons, regardless of age, have the right to be heard in court in immigration cases. Elian was snatched by Clinton/Reno goons, of course, before he was ever heard in court. I sincerely believe that the incident swung many more than the number of votes needed by Gore to prevail in Florida in 2000. When nature takes its course and the Cuban dictator is no more, maybe Elian will immigrate to USA. Maybe not, though, if Hitlery ever gets elected!
I recall only a self-conscious, embarrassed silence from the "old" (formerly "mainstream") news media when this picture hit the front pages. Bill Clinton and Janet Reno pretty much got a pass from the old media. Just IMAGINE if this had happened during the Bush Administration with Attorney General John Ashcroft....

This was a moment in our history that I am totally ashamed of and to this day, I want klinton and his band of thugs, including gregg craig, to undergo a hard investigation for this dispicable act of violence and betrayal.
That is a pic I will not soon forget. Just like the one of baby Jessica being taken away to give to her biological dad a few years back. I was just sick for a while after the Elian fiasco. And you're right...the Clinton's have never paid the price for such atrocities.

Note that I totally disagree with the way this was handled. It was another Clinton abuse of power, but illegal immigration must stop.
Generations of people have come to this country and made something of themselves. Are you specifically targeting Cubans? Don't blame them. Blame Jimmuh and Clinton for wet foot-dry foot. Besides if they're successful and not sponging off the government what do you care? If I was Cuban and knew about wet foot-dry foot, I'd try to come over here too. Technically it's not illegal immigration because it is approved by the American government whether you like it or not. Personally, if the government wanted to be consisent they'd allow Haitians to stay too but the US government has not always been consistent. Even so, the amount of Cubans getting here by means of studebakers, pickups on tires, and inner tubes has decreased SEVERELY since 9-11.
