A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....01-24....Military Monday
Billie, The Mayor

A Few of FR's Finest
....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

Goodness And Grace

Read: Job 29

I have heard of You . . . but now my eye sees You. Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes. —Job 42:5-6

Bible In One Year: Job 28-31

A teenager whose father is abusive said to me, "I want to be a good man like my Sunday school teacher and like you, not like my dad."

Knowing his Sunday school teacher, I could certainly agree that he was a "good man," and I was grateful that he also saw me as "good." I do want to be reverent, kind, forgiving, pure in my lifestyle, and obedient to God. But I also know the sinfulness of my own heart and how dependent I am on God's goodness and grace.

The Lord spoke of Job as "a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil" (Job 1:8). Yet after all his trials, Job said, "I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes" (42:6). Even after reflecting on his own goodness (29:1-25), he knew the condition of his heart.

From a human perspective, many people may be described as "good." But God sees the disobedience, selfishness, and hate that lie deep within all of us. He also knows that we have spiritual blind spots. And when He opens our eyes to see ourselves as He does, we understand why a "good man" like Job said he abhorred himself.

Lord, help us to be good but never to lose sight of our sinfulness and unworthiness. Thank You for the forgiveness You offer us in Christ. —Herb Vander Lugt

Teach me, Lord, my true condition,
Bring me, childlike, to Your side;
May I never trust my goodness—
Only in Your grace abide. —Anon.

Even the best people have nothing to boast about.

Jan. 23, 2005 Soldier's remains coming home after more than 60 years Associated Press EAGLE PASS, Texas - More than 60 years after his plane disappeared during World War II, a South Texas soldier's remains are coming home. Second Lt. James Walter Carver will be buried with full military honors on Saturday at the foot of his mother's grave in Eagle Pass. An Army navigator, Carver had just turned 22 when his plane disappeared while en route to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, after a night raid on a key Japanese base. Seven other men, including another Texan, were on board. Carver's parents received a telegram in November 1942 telling them their son was missing in action. "They always said they were hopeful that maybe he was in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp," said Kathryn Cunningham, Carver's niece. A villager searching for beetle nuts in Papua New Guinea discovered the wreckage of the American bomber plane in 1998. The next year, a recovery team from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command took custody of the remains and artifacts found near the crash site, including Carver's dog tags, navigation kit and cigarette lighter. His remains were identified through the use of mitochondrial DNA from a blood sample taken from Cunningham, whose 86-year-old mother is Carver's only remaining sibling. "When I told her he'd been found, my mom had a look of pure joy," Cunningham said. "None of us ever expected it." Carver was a sophomore majoring in petroleum engineering at Texas A&I College in Kingsville, now Texas A&M University-Kingsville, when he joined the Army Air Corps in January 1942. He wanted to be a pilot, but the Army Air Corps needed navigators, and his math background made him a perfect candidate. He graduated third in his class from navigation school at Mather Field in California. Carver, who was promoted to first lieutenant and awarded the Purple Heart while missing in action, flew about 19 missions before he was killed. "I'm ready to come home and sleep in a good bed and take a bath every hour," he wrote in one of the last letters his family received. Carver's father died in 1953, and his mother died in 1979. His other sister died in 2002. Information from: San Antonio Express-News, http://www.mysa.com

Good morning! Just wanted to stop by before heading out into the cold...

We've learned that our young friend, a medic with the ONG who's been stationed at the Baghdad airport for most of the past year, is now in Kuwait, waiting for the rest of his journey home.

May God bless him, and all who serve..

A Marvelous Military Monday to everyone!!

I've been so sad about Johnny's passing. Have lots of great memories of staying up late with my family and watching his show. So many laughs.
Didn't know until yesterday that he had been in the Navy during WWII...at the same time that our fathers were in the Navy.

I didn't know it either. Aqua's Dad, deadhead's Dad and Johnny Carson, all WW2 Navy Veterans.

I was a huge fan of the show, always stayed up to watch him, no wonder I never wanted to get up for school :-) I posted on another thread yesterday, one of my favorites was when the potato chip lady was on. Have missed him since he left the show. Will always have wonderful memories of him.

Looks like a big Church Dave, and what a great wall of pictures.

It is a large church, but the cards on the wall represent family and friends of those serving in our Armed Forces, not necessarily members.

It was a nice day here, too ... a little sun, a little shade from clouds ... just a flurry of mountain air ... )

Little Red Riding Hood is skipping down the road when she sees a big bad wolf crouched down behind a log.

"My, what big eyes you have, Mr. Wolf."

The wolf jumps up and runs away.

Further down the road Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again and this time he is crouched behind a bush.

"My, what big ears you have, Mr. Wolf."

Again, the wolf jumps up and runs away. About two miles down t he road Little Red Riding Hood sees the wolf again and this time he is crouched down behind a rock.

"My, what big teeth you have Mr. Wolf."

With that the wolf jumps up and screams, "Will you knock it off, I'm tying to poop."

Saying hello, thank you, and extra special prayers for our brave military for these next few days, where they will surely be needing them as the election in Iraq draws closer. This is what we're fighting for.
