Genes Linked With Male Sexual Orientation Found

The genes a man gets from his mother and father may play an important role in determining whether he is gay or not, according to a new study likely to reignite the “gay gene” debate.

Researchers say it’s the first time the entire human genetic makeup (search) has been scanned in search of possible genetic determinants of male sexual orientation. The results suggest that several genetic regions may influence homosexuality.

“It builds on previous studies that have consistently found evidence of genetic influence on sexual orientation, but our study is the first to look at exactly where those genes are located,” says researcher Brian Mustanski, PhD, a psychologist at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Those previous studies looked only at the genes located on the X chromosome (search). Genes on this chromosome are only passed to a son from his mother. But this study examined genetic information on all chromosomes, including genes from the father.

About 5 minutes after they become pro-life. I'm sure the idea of "selective reduction" isn't appealing as it used to be.

Nothing they "found" was of any statistical or analytical signficiance, by their own admission in the article itself. Included is their not even coming close to confirming earlier studies indciating a different chromosomal region as having bearing on the issue.

Here's a quote:

Several limitations of the current study should be noted. First, we were unable to calculate empirically derived significance levels for this project because none of the simulation programs that currently exist allow for the use of sex-specific maps with ASP data. Future development of simulation programs that allow for the incorporation of this important information will prevent this limitation in the future. Second, our marker set had an average resolution of 10 cM, which may have led to underestimated mlod scores. We discuss in detail above the likely negative effects that this had on our X chromosome results. Optimally, genome scans are followed up with dense markers placed in promising regions, but because of financial limitations, we were unable to do this. Future studies will undoubtedly employ more sophisticated and dense marker sets. Third, we analyzed only 146 independent families, which is a small sample for a complex trait such as sexual orientation. Approximately half of these families have previously been included in reports on the X chromosome (Hamer et al. 1993; Hu et al. 1995). Future research should be conducted on a new and larger sample of participants. Our linkage results should be interpreted with consideration of the fact that we only included families with two self-identified gay brothers. Our results may not extrapolate to individuals who do not meet our exclusion criteria, such as individuals who engage in same-sex behavior but do not identify as gay or individuals who identify as bisexual.

The authors go on anyone to discuss their ideas on how individual genes might play a role.

Overall rather a joke of a paper.

PC moving in to science.

Homosexual Agenda Ping.

Wowieee! Big news - oops, not. No "gay" gene after all, once you read past the headline.

Surprise, surprise - I bet you all thought this was it.

Let me and DirtyHarryY2K know if anyone wants on/off this pinglist.

At minimum, you've still got to account for at least 40% of the phenomenon.

This article says nothing but, as usual, makes loud claims with the title. There is no gay gene - tens of thousands of former homosexuals have a lot to say about this subject.

Thanks for the ping. I was out helping a friend demolish his house, and by the time I arrived here, found everybody had already demolished this article.

Hmmm, why do some have anal sex for the first time while in prison. Some kind of hidden gene that just shows up when a man is in jail?

" researcher Brian Mustanski, PhD, a psychologist "

Right a psychologist is studying where genes are.

Dean Hamer, Mr Gay gene himself, says, "There is no gay gene.."

If that is even what the study says.

It may well be like finding the genes that control LEARNING. It may well be the learning genes have been detected.

Either way by arguing an "interaction" suggests these fools are grasping at straws since EVERY SINGLE OTHER STUDY has been disproven.

If this is true, will homosexuals oppose a genetic test? What happens when mothers abort fetuses with homosexual "genes", the same way down syndrome babies are aborted?

I believe this is more outcome oriented science to bolster the homo-marriage efforts.

So, does this mean gays become pro-life, when parents start testing for this gene and aborting gay babies?

There's a genetic trait? That means they can develop a genetic test??

I'd like to welcome the homosexual lobby to the pro-life side.

notice how nobody makes a reference to a specific gene number.

The homo-loby will discover a "gay" gene but it will keep it a "trade secret" in order to make gaydar for the dead.
