Students are forced to remove pro-Bush window display

In Bristol, England, a group of university students including myself put up a window display of pictures to show our support for Bush but are met with nothing but undemocractic resistance, including:

• Name calling when we leave the house
• People blocking our driveway
• Egg throwing
• Threats of physical violence (which finally forced us to take it down)

The lack of freedom of expression in this country is shocking.

Amazingly so! We thought it was very discreet. Aside from the people that were abusive, literally everyone I saw walking past starred at in disbelief like we were from a different planet.

Truthfully, if you had been in a university town over here (aside from Utah and the South), the same thing would have happened.

Your right to free speech (whatever rights you have over there) are invalid in certain zones. These zones are primarily higher education, progressive churches, and state-subsidized schools. Oh, I forgot the courts.

We told the police about it but they didn't seem to take it seriously. They said unless one of us was actually assaulted there is nothing they can do. They also said it was our neighbours' right to show their disagreement with it otherwise. But by doing that they've stopped our freedom of expression. It is entirely unfair.

Undoubtedly, it's "unfair," but isn't blocking your driveway some kind of violation of your rights? Isn't Egg throwing "assault"?

Threats of physical violence speak for iself, don't they?

And are your police serious when they state premeditated threats must first be exacted before acting? Does that include "murder"?

As I recall in a vote the Oxford Union declared in the nineteen twenties that in case war came to Britain they would not fight. This attitude emboldened the dictators to denegrate the British willingness to fight. We had our own Oxford Union here in the USA during the Vietnam War, and people like John Kerry and Jane Fonda were our nemeses. It is obvious that democracy is a near thing, and that half the people would accept fascism/Marxism in an eyeblink if it somehow led to more personal income and greater liesure time. Might be able to help you with the blocking driveway problem. Take photos, document incidents. If local constabulary don't help, forward to their superiors. It will eventually get results. There is a point at which the police will rather help you than sit around doing nothing.
Point in case, co-worker had a neighbor that kept blocking driveway. Once documented/forwarded, the next response was by a old/"crusty" police sergeant. Upon surveying the situation, the sergeant decried "Right, help me push this car into the street". Once in the street, he wrote the individual for illegal parking, car was towed. hefty fine/fees. Never happened again.
Point is, get on good side of police, they do have a degree of inertia (don't call on a rainy night!), but they do have a mean streak- if you can tap in to it.
Then sit back and enjoy.
