CPAC has asked pollsters Tony Fabrizio and John McLaughlin to conduct a straw poll of the estimated 4,000 delegates; the questions include:
Thinking ahead to the 2008 Presidential election, who do you think will be the next Republican nominee for President? 1. George Allen. 2. Haley Barbour. 3. Bill Frist. 4 Newt Gingrich. 5. Rudy Giuliani. 6. Chuck Hagel. 7. Mike Huckabee. 8. John McCain. 9. Bill Owens. 10. George Pataki. 11. Tim Pawlenty. 12. Condi Rice. 13. Mitt Romney. 14. Mark Sanford. 15. Rick Santorum. 16. Other

Plus he's a stiff.
By far the best twosome I have seen mentioned on this thread. That's one woman I would vote for in a Heartbeat, Rice couldn't hold a candle to Ann. Nor could many others to Liddy.
Good question - and answer. I met Condi and worked with her for awhile on the NSC staff and I had no clue. She is a very intelligent, engaging lady (and I do mean lady), who is very respectful and appreciative of others. I just plain like her. Now that I know she has a purist view of the Second Amendment, I'm on board.
Did I mention I was running for President in '08?
(See post #85)
He's very conservative - a good old boy who wears cowboy boots and chews tobacco (no kidding). He's the kind of guy you'd want to go drink a beer with, and he's a very astute politician. Most Virginians think he was an outstanding governor and he's a staunch pro-Second Amendment kind of guy.
I'm a big fan of George Allen, but he needs to start building name recognition YESTERDAY.
George Allen. Athlete, former governor of a Southern state (the secret of success), articulate, conservative Senator. I assume that he doesn't have the wife/children baggage Jeb does. He's very appealing.
Didn't he used to have an on-going fued with Jack Benny?
Is this our official kick off!?
Well, I guess it could be. I really was thinking of a star-studded event, complete with fireworks. But I guess 85 posts into 2 hour old thread is close enough.
I don't think it's that important right off. Look at Hatred-Powered Howard Dean. Hell, look at Kerry! No one knew who the hell he was before the campaign.
Allen has a reelection campaign in 2006 to provide a vehicle for him to raise money and to keep himself in the news. He's already met with Iowa delegates and received a very good reception.
Allen has a couple of weak spots but overall he's good, and he's highly electable.
Didn't Allen flip-flop on the assault weapon ban?
Who is gonna sing?
I guess we didn't plan that part yet. I know we talked about "Big Ball's in Cowtown" for the inauguration, but we never did get into details about the announcement. There's lots of singers that live in this area. I'm sure once some of them hear about our campaign they will line up to entertain on our behalf.
Allen has my support, he's not like a regular senator. He has executive experience.
True!
S'fer as I can tell ......
Allen took the "no new gun laws, enforce the existing ones" stance in his 2000 campaign, which included continuing the AWB. ("I have taken a position that I would not repeal the existing ban. Therefore logically I would vote to continue the existing law.")
By the time the AWB sunset rolled around he concluded it was worthless and voted against reauthorizing it (see link for his reasoning).

So he flipped, either for political reasons or because he saw more evidence that the AWB was not all that, you make the call.
