I would take all such reports coming out of N. Korea with a grain of salt. Odds are, this is part of a larger disinformation/strategic deception operation (no doubt coordinated with Red China and 'Russia') designed to dupe the West into believing cracks are starting to develop in Kim Jong-il's country-sized gulag.

On a serious note, TLR, let me say the following, publicly on FR, :

1. THANK YOU TLR, for providing a TRANSLATION (Korean to English), which was your personal work based on your proficiency, something you took time out for and did not simply post an English article. You gave us here on FR a rare, exclusive peek at some news we otherwise might not get through the US MSM for weeks on end, due to the language barrier and the general poor reporting of the MSM (which is why many of us are here!).

2. I, and I know others, appreciate your efforts ALL THE TIME on FR on the North Korea issue. I'm sorry if we cannot, just for a moment, try to get a serious thread going on this topic. You provided your best. It seems like 80% of the comments are/were juvenile remarks about Asian names, just because they sound 'strange' to our culture and collective ear.

3. Take heart. It is precisely because(as they are bombarded by news)not a few Americans know all the players and intricate issues, for example, in Israel vs. Palestine fiasco, but they are abjectly asleep at the wheel (except maybe 10-20 freepers who are regular, thinking contributors to the North Korea threads) on the DPRK situation, and seem to have spent little-to-no time trying to analyze the various important local NK/SK players in this deadly game where hundreds of thousands of Americans and S. Koreans and Japanese are at immediate risk due to D.P.R.K. WMD and deadly intents.

I'll try to join you tomorrow to pick up on this discussion later, and try to turn this thread around to one of substance. I like humor on FR just as much as the next guy, and I indulge in it myself. However, just perhaps (I am thinking) that you may have closed your day over wherever you are, but maybe wondering if we couldn't have gotten a little more intellectual "traction" on this informative FR D.P.R.K. thread and your brilliant translation and further connecting of the dots as good if not better than any of our investigative journalists or intelligence agencies. Thanks again TLR from many of us. (I'll try to research DPRK KCNA dispatches from around that time for anything out of the ordinary from Pyongyang.)

But showing cracks, when they don't exist, might risk needlessly emboldening the west to step up its destabilization, thinking that we are nearing a 'tipping' point. I don't know what rationalization that the DPRK leadership would have for that? One thing is for sure, security (that is to say police presence, searches, etc) in Pyongyang around this time and year end, were heightened if I recall to unprecedented levels...at least that is what some Western diplomats reported seeing around Pyongyang. It may have always been the case, but, for example, even at the Korean Central New Agency building, there are soldiers there right now with Ak-47s clearly visible (on a Japanese TV clip a few days ago).

Re #64

Thank you for your support and encouragement, as always. Despite disproportionate number of jokes, this thread scored thousands of hits.

I hope people would get better informed.

Check this out. The English translation of DPRK's news service, showing KJI's visit to a military unit. The thing is, the visit itself may have occurred just before the alleged shooting incident over the weekend (28-29 November time frame). For what it's worth:

"Kim Jong Il Inspects KPA Unit Pyongyang, November 30 (KCNA) -- Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army Kim Jong Il, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission, inspected KPA Unit 3875. He acquainted himself with the performance of the unit's duty before looking round the serviceperson's hall, a library, a bedroom, a mess hall, a washroom and other places to learn about its management. He expressed great satisfaction over the fact that the unit has put all aspects of the servicepersons' life on a regular footing by following the way the anti-Japanese guerilla army managed its units. He dropped in at a military lecture room to watch a training of soldiers. Seeing them undergoing an intensive training without wasting time, he gave a warm pep-talk to them who were making persevering efforts to thoroughly implement the WPK's policy of training. He spared time to watch an art performance given by servicepersons of a company of the unit. He had a photo session with servicepersons of the unit. The next leg of his inspection was a sub-unit of the unit. After receiving a salute, he watched its servicepersons in training. He set forth tasks to be fulfilled to increase the combat capability of the unit, greatly pleased to learn that all commanding officers and men of the sub-unit have grown to be a-match-for-a-hundred fighters by making the training a part of their daily routine and life in warm response to the WPK's slogan "Training means a battle." He familiarized himself in detail with soldiers' service and living, going round a general lecture room, a gymnasium, an educational room, bedrooms, a mess hall and other entertainment and logistic facilities. After seeing warmly heated bedrooms, the general lecture room where a variety of materials for the political and military technical education were on display and all the entertainment and logistic facilities kept neat and tidy, he praised the servicepersons of the unit for tenaciously and methodically managing its economic life following the lifestyle of the anti-Japanese guerilla army. Warm comradeship for the soldiers is one of the noble traits of the commanding officers of the revolutionary army, he noted, calling on all of them to pay deep attention to all aspects of the soldiers' life. He gave the servicepersons of the sub-unit a pair of binoculars, a machine gun and an automatic rifle as gifts before having a photograph taken with them. He was accompanied by KPA Generals Ri Myong Su and Hyon Chol Hae. "

Your welcome.

And, this one has the Great Leader out and about in a time frame probably contiguous with the shooting report (let's say, the final several days of November, allowing for KCNA's translations from Korean to English...I think it is a two-three day time lag, and then a time lag from the event to the reporting of it in Rodong Shinmum or on Pyongyang TV:

"Kim Jong Il Enjoys Art Performance Pyongyang, December 3 (KCNA) -- Kim Jong Il, general secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and chairman of the DPRK National Defence Commission, enjoyed an art performance given by the State Symphony Orchestra. Also appreciating it were Secretaries of the WPK Central Committee Kim Kuk Thae and Kim Ki Nam, Chairman of the Radio and TV Broadcasting Committee of the DPRK Cha Sung Su, Department Director of the WPK Central Committee Ri Kwang Ho and First Vice Department Director of the WPK Central Committee Ri Jae Il. It put on the stage the newly created symphonic suite "Long Journey of Songun" and orchestral music "Rich Harvest Comes to the Chongsan Plain" and "Arirang." The performers fully represented the strong emotional effect of the orchestral music rich in national flavor through their unique rendition, thus strikingly demonstrating the validity and vitality of the WPK's literary and art policy of creating, arranging and depicting any art piece in Korean style. He congratulated the creators and artistes of the orchestra on their successful performance, greatly pleased with the presentation made by them with high artistry. He highly appreciated the successes made by them in the past, noting that they have developed the orchestral music to be Juche-oriented one which is loved by the people and contributes to the revolution by firmly adhering to the principle of developing it in Korean style to suit the sentiment of the Korean people. He said the State Symphony Orchestra with a long history is one which we can boast before the world for its stature, the quality of its musical instruments, the level of its representation and performing activities. He set forth important tasks which would serve as guidelines in further developing the Juche-oriented orchestral music, underscoring the need to make a graceful and rich representation of the people's spiritual world getting nobler with the passage of time and thus fully satisfy the cultural and emotional need of the people. "

Correction:

In the article,

knocked unconscious --> was knocked unconscious (note: this typo occurs twice)

In #1,

three different news source --> three different news sources

he is said to be really ill --> she is said to be really ill

Kim is reported to be extremely jealous of his well-endowed cousin, Won Hung-Lo.

Re #67, #68

Predictably, the articles project the impression that everything is in order.:) Can you detect anything missing or out of place in these article? Since I do not go over them carefully, I do not know what to or what not to expect from this kind of articles.

A lot of assassination attempts are done either by relatives, close friends or cohorts looking to move up.

They are much of the same, worn out propaganda. That is, the Chia Pet, the Short-Donged One visits these various KPA or Naval units (specific location or day never usually given to my knowledge), goes through the same inspections and "on the spot guidance", gives the same damn commemorative binoculars and rifles (probably his aides then just take them back for presentation to the next unit of saps), poses for the same damn pictures with the boys, and away he gingerly goes. For all I know, they could be taking this visits and simply changing the locations, and using the same boilerplate. They obviously are trying to project normality. I guess the proof in the pudding would be by visible increased protection for Kim in Pyongyang, and or other indications that I would not go into here in open forum, that we may be picking up out of there.

One recalls how Park Chung Hee (the South Korean President) met his own bloody end, in November of 1979, at a closed dinner party with his family members in full view of him being plugged at close range by an automatic pistol, wielded by the chief of the South Korean intelligence agency (Kyu).

Not bad shooting considering the size of the target.

Bingo!

If the West does decide that it is in fact time for the Chia Pet to leave the scene, and I mean like, for GOOD...and they have constructed an acceptable succession scenario in view of the nukes, then expect one of Kim's family members to do this in the next year or so.

Probably quite a huge performance bonus and career promotion waiting for the staff and management of the agency or group in the West that successfully pulls that off.
