ZOT! U.S.: IRA must disband now

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (Reuters) -- The United States has demanded that the IRA disband after the guerrilla group's astonishing offer to shoot the killers of a murdered Northern Ireland Catholic man. "It's time for the IRA to go out of business," U.S. special envoy Mitchell Reiss said Wednesday. For the IRA's political ally Sinn Fein, Northern Ireland's biggest Irish nationalist party, the U.S. demand was yet another blow to its democratic credentials. Reiss told BBC radio: "It's time for Sinn Fein to be able to say explicitly, without ambiguity, without ambivalence, that criminality will not be tolerated. "You can't sign up for the rule of law a la carte." The IRA's offer -- also condemned by London and Dublin -- handed fresh ammunition to Protestant rivals who say Sinn Fein is not fit for government until the Irish Republican Army disarms and disbands. The killing of Robert McCartney by a gang including IRA members has plunged the IRA and Sinn Fein into crisis -- coming just weeks after the guerrilla group was blamed for a £26.5 million ($50 million) bank raid in central Belfast. London and Dublin say there can be no progress on restoring the British-ruled province's regional government -- set up under a 1998 peace deal to share power between divided Protestants and Catholics -- until the issue of IRA criminality is resolved. Home rule was suspended in 2002 when unionists, who support ties to Britain, said they would no longer sit in government with Sinn Fein until the IRA got rid of the weapons which sustained its three-decade campaign against British rule. "It is their declared intent to murder," said hardline Democratic Unionist Party leader Ian Paisley in response to the IRA move.

That is wrong.
The IRA does not want the destruction of an Entire race of people. It just wants Britain to stop meddling in its affairs.
London has troops in Northern Ireland, but it cant be called an occupation because the British appointed government asked for the troops to come.

Anyone who knows the real history of what has gone on in Ireland for the past century, knows which side to be on.

And anyone whose bothered to read the United States Constitution knows that we should be on neither 'side'. Let them deal with it, although for the record I know what you mean and I agree fully. But in continuation of 'stick our nose into other nation states internal affairs' foreign policy (contrary to the intent of the Framers) I doubt that will happen.

I don't buy that for a minute. Real Irish people are generally much more scornful of the IRA than even we British. They know very well it's a criminal enterprise - far more than anyone because they're its principal victims.

Republicanism is all well and good. There is a vehicle for that called the SDLP. Terrorism and criminality are unacceptable.

You scoff at the idea of British genocide by starvation against the Irish 1845-1860?

What's your take on the IRA offering to put bullets in the heads of McCartney's murderers?

You can be sure the IRA didn't dream this up - the rot at the top of SF gave them talking points.

The IRA/SF are a page right out of The Theatre of The Absurd. It's impossible for me to get my head around how anyone could dream up such a squad of utter wankers.

I do not support the murder of the driver. Im Dissapointed it happened.

Yeah, just like I'm sure there are people who are "disappointed" that the WTC fell. What a shame, such nice buildings....,< /sarcasm >

Sorry, the IRA lost any legitimacy they ever had when they turned to terror tactics against innocent people. They lost even more when they started training terrorists in the ME and South America.

A terrorist is a terrorist is a terrorist, and anyone who supports them is a terrorist sympathizer.

Thanks for the bit of sanity in this emotionally charged issue.

Daughter was in England some years ago, 17 year old, riding the underground (is that what it's called) Suddenly there is a hurry up evacuation. Everybody got up pretty quickly. When the kids asked the policeman what was wrong they were told that there was a call that an IRA bomb was on the train.

Terrorists are terrorists. Targeting innocent civilians is terror.

No pretending it's justified. No excusing it no matter how many times the Kennedy's praise these people.

I'm with you on this. I thought I knew about the IRA and its history until I spent 2 weeks in Belfast and met a fellow who escaped the Catholic ghettos because he was an expert hurler. He had many friends on both 'sides'...he showed me things I couldn't believe..like how the British Gov. built beautiful goverment housing for Protestant families and pushed the Catholics out to these atrocious ghettos. You rarely hear of the UVF and other Protestant paramilitaries over here because the Brits have successfully kept the fact that they have killed far more people than the IRA out of the U.S. press. In fact there have been several incidents where the UVF have blown up pubs and shops to make it appear like an IRA bombing just to keep the pressure on them.

The collusion between the RUC, UVF and the Brit. Government is well documented, but rarely discussed. Bill Clinton did his best to sweep this dirty little secret under the rug, which is why he is so loved by Loyalists. I experienced it first hand when the RUC decided to run me and my friend in for a little questioning after visiting a 'Catholic' pub in Derry. When they found out I was American they wisked me out the door ASAP.

My opinion of the Brits really went down considerably after visiting Belfast. I will say I enjoyed Belfast much more than Dublin..just because of the history and such.
