Pittsburgh (KDKA) A deadly shooting outside Carrick High School this afternoon has put the school on lockdown.

Officials have confirmed that one student is dead and two others were wounded in the shooting around 2pm.

According to authorities, police stopped a car outside the school and were running a check on its license plate when another vehicle pulled up and started shooting at the car.

One juvenile in the car was shot in the head and killed; a second juvenile was critically injured by gunshots. A third juvenile in the car was injured by flying glass. Authorities believe all three were Carrick High School students.

Police say the shooting may have involved an AK-47.

As a precaution, students have been kept inside the building past their normal 2:17pm dismissal while police officers swarmed the area; but they're expected to be released within the hour.

More than 1300 students in ninth through twelfth grades are enrolled at Carrick High School, which is located on Parkfield Street.

Hell, that's nothing! I even know where Indianola is!

Indianola is a suburb of Dorseyville, where I went to junior high school.

I'm still on secure constitutional ground - rocket-propelled grenades can't really be classified as "firearms".

The definition of the word "arms" is anything that could be carried by the typical infantry soldier. There are grenade launchers that attach to M-16 rifles which are capable of being carried by soldiers. Therefore, citizens should have the right to own these.

When people mention AK-47, people think of an automatic weapon. If it was an Ak that was used, it was ,more than likely, a semi-automatic gun. There are lots of semi-auto's of all sorts of makes and configurations. To say that this gun is a problem isn't really accurate.

So they can have the grenade-launchers - but not the grenades. Explosives aren't covered by the Second Amendment. /half-serious

Fully serious, I don't know. There are too many complications - like, for instance, you can have the launcher but not the grenade - and too much I don't know about weapons. In short, I don't think I can effectively debate for two reasons: One, I don't know enough, and two, I'm not even sure where I would draw Diddle E. Squat's line.

This has been an informative thread.

I've learned some things about the difference between various assault rifles available "on the street" and I thank those who took the time to inform me!

It's no surprise to learn how strongly many cherish the Second Amendment. It happens that I do as well.

If I may say- I am not a troll- nor a gun hater. Ironically- my son's MOS in the Army is rifleman..

That we differ at Free Republic on all manner of issues is something I appreciate- I learn here every day!

Ignorant, eh? I could tell you were going there, trying to say that anyone who doesn't know the specs on every kind of weapon shouldn't have a voice on gun issues. I already answered your question, so I'll rephrase my point. IMHO there is a difference between reasonable self-defense arms and military-grade weapons, and I am open to restricting access to military-grade hardware. Don't know where the line should be drawn, and generally favor erring on the side of not being restrictive enough than too restrictive. Obviously a 6-shooter is way too limited to be sufficient for self-defense in all cases, but the equivalent of a gatlin gun might be too much. I am not trying to write the law, but am saying that I, and many conservatives (regardless of how you browbeat them here) think that some restrictions on excessive firepower can be justified. That isn't simply a response to media brainwashing, or ignorance of the constitution, or an emotional overreaction, or total ignorance of gun issues. Its a difference of opinion on whether any restrictions on the biggest/most powerful weapons are reasonable, or if everyone should have easy access to rocket launchers or anything else.

Obviously I meant conceal carry, which everyone except yourself were easily able to discern as a typing error.

But thanks for noting the error so I would have a chance to correct it.

Ok I see now you have bought into the idea that since the APB went away there are no restrictions on machine guns.

You jumped to the wrong conclusion.

… do you seriously want "your side" to take them on with Brown Bess?

Hardly. My point is that at the time the 2nd Amendment was written the sporting arm was superior to the military arm in lethality.

Police were looking for a late-1990s or early-2000s green or teal-colored car with a sunroof, possibly a Buick LeSabre or Buick Park Avenue. At least two black males were believed to be inside.

Police were on the scene!? The shooters not only got away but the police didn't even get a good description of the car!?

Bad.

You are right, of course.

On the streets of many a city or town carrying an AK-47 or other assault rifle seems to lack any good reason. In Israel, you see them all the time -- and for good reason. In Switzerland people keep them in their hallway cupboards. And carry them at times to local militia drills.

But in the course of a regular day near a regular American High School --- to see someone carrying an assualt rifle is certainly to invite reasonable fear in many and depending on the circumstance reasonable suspicion enough to invite police scrutiny of some sort.

Yet there are some places -- Camden NJ, parts of Philly -- where law-abiding, sane and level-headed adults should be encouraged to carry assault rifles in their daily activities. Encouraged to point of the government supplying training in use, guns and ammo.

The Constitution is clear, btw. The right that is especially protected in the Second Amendment is exactly that of allowing citizens to have and carry military weapons -- for that is what the "Militia clause" means.

I'd venture that the uninfringed right to bear arms might allow the government to require militia-level training and militia-level physical, mental and emotional stability and ability in order to carry in public places-- otherwise no restrictions! "Uninfringed" is a potent word of law.

Sorry for the off-topic question, but I'm sure there is a lot of Pittsburgh folk looking at this thread:

I just finished watching a History Channel documentary on the US Army, and it was stated that artillery noise from Gettysburg was heard all the way in Pittsburgh.

Yahoo maps tells me that is 185 miles. Is this possible?

I WAS going to flame you, but then I realized that you are just ignorant about the Second Amendment of the Constitution. It's just further proof that the dumbing down of America has worked.

FYI: We have the God given right to carry AK-47's or ANY other gun in America, and we have had to fight an uphill battle to keep that right.

The scary thing is that people like you would vote to destroy our Constitution without ever knowing what would happen to America if we were disarmed. You should KNOW better, but if you don't, shame on the education system in America. IF you do know, then shame on you.

Read my tag line! It applies in this matter too. Please read the Constitution.

I love answering my own questions:

This site says that not only was the artillery noise from Gettysburg heard in Pittsburgh, but it sounded like rolling thunder in Baltimore!
