FREE REPUBLIC REPORT: Picture of soldier with gun is allowed in Oregon high school
Principal Cynthia Robinson | 3-31-05 | dfu

Posted on 03/31/2005 11:13:47 AM PST by doug from upland

There was a thread yesterday that caused quite a controversy -- Should a photo of an armed Marine be posted at a school?

Well, it seems that there is a happy ending. I spoke with principal Cynthia Robinson a short time ago. She was gracious enough to speak with me even though she was on lunch duty.

A sister brought in a picture that was displayed, which showed her Marine brother with a weapon. A controversy erupted because people were led to believe that the picture was removed because of the showing of a weapon. That is not the case.

Ms. Robinson told me that she had no problem with the weapon. The problem was that the picture had a guy with no shirt and tatoos. She objected because it was not a dignified picture. She had considered putting a frame around it so only the girl's Marine brother was shown.

The girl brought in another picture of her brother, with his weapon, and it is on display.

Ms. Robinson is proud of our military. Her father was in the Army, and her husband served in the Navy.

End of controversy.

"The problem was that the picture had a guy with no shirt and tatoos."

That's really just about as ridiculous.

The point is that it was not about the weapon. That was the controversy. If she thought it better to have a dignified picture, that is just fine. The picture is now proudly displayed. Give her some credit. You know that there are many schools that would not allow the picture because of the weapon.

That's odd. The article from the Oregon Statesman Journal reported that:

School officials denied the photo on the grounds the guns in the picture violated district policy

I'm not suggesting that it's worth fighting over, I just think it's another ridiculous issue.

If the guy had been in the Army and obviously had some class there wouldn't have been any problem.

The issue is no longer rediculous and is worth fighting over when society takes a rediculous stand and takes rediculous action over something that is not rediculous.

At least they are showing good discipline with the trigger fingers outside the guards. Can you imagine the amount of work the Marines have to do to eliminate all the bad habits people pick up from watching TV and movies?

Well. That settles it, then. Newspapers don't get such important details wrong, eh? < /sarcasm >

Well, a picture is now proudly displayed with a weapon. I guess they'll have to update the story.
