Being new and all, I don't understand what a ping is...

a "ping"" is an alert to a particular thread or aarticle that a FReeper thinks might be of interest to certaain other people.
Youu simply put the names of posters wwhose aattention you wish to draw and then "ping" them..
Give me a moment.

When you post a reply, the name of the person you are replying to appears in the "To:" box. You can substitute or add other names to the box, separated by a semi-colon.
Often, when posters see an article that they think others would be interested in, they will type those peoples' names in the box. They type "ping" in the reply, and all of the people who wre listed in the box will have that thread show up on their list of articles to which they have replied or to which they have been "pinged."
"Ping" comes from the sound of radar, I believe.

At the top of the main page there is a place to do seraches. Do a search for Freeper Lore and you will learn just a ton about FR.
Also, Read up on the posting rules.
