In the 'pings' set in some comments, besides the expected member names, I have seen the word 'All'. Does that 'ping' the message to everyone who already left a comment on that thread? How about those who comment after? And are there other 'special' words, besides 'All'? Thanks.

CNN puts McCain with 97 delegates and Romney at 74. Let's look at the worst case for Romney on Super Tuesday. Next Tuesday the winner-take-all states that lean McCain are New York (101), Missouri (58), Arizona (53), New Jersey (52) Connecticut (30), and Delaware (18) for a total of 312 delegates. (Even though Missouri, another winner-take-all leans Huck right now, lets give its 58 delegates to McCain.) Romney is favored in winner-take-all Utah (36) and Montana (25), for a total of 51 delegates. Thus before the sorting takes place in the other states, McCain's got 409 delegates and Romney's got...

He also has a practice session planned with swing coach Butch Harmon. "I'm feeling much, much better," Mickelson said. "I'm happy about that and...

The first-base coach for the minor league Tulsa Drillers died last week after being struck in the head by a foul ball hit off a wood bat during a game in North Little Rock, Ark. The coach, 35-year-old Mike Coolbaugh, had played briefly in the majors in 2002 and 2003; he leaves a wife and two children. His death adds to the debate about dangers in baseball, which usually focuses on young players struck by balls hit off aluminum bats. Supporters of metal bats insist that debate is skewed. "Why is it when there's an injury from a ball hit...

Deviation from liberalism gets labeled a disease. ``What is wrong with Dick Cheney?'' asks Michelle Cottle in the inaugural issue of the newly relaunched New Republic. She then spends the next 2,000 words marshaling evidence suggesting that his cardiac disease has left him demented and mentally disordered. The charming part of this not-to-be-missed article (titled "Heart of Darkness," no less) is that it is framed as an exercise in compassion. Since she knows that the only way for her New Republic readers to understand Cheney is that he is evil — ``next time you see Cheney behaving oddly, don't automatically...

Barack Obama is taking heat from Jews and homosexuals in the wake of a report in the Los Angeles Times that he was once a "registered" Muslim. The LA Times reports that Obama did not attend a radical madrasa as Fox News claimed earlier this year. But the LA Times discovered that "Obama was registered by his family as a Muslim at both of the schools he attended" in Indonesia as a child. The Obama campaign has consistently downplayed any Islamic connection. The revelation won't play well with many Americans. The Des Moines Register reports today that "Obama's expression of...

His health is rough; he has been the most disastrous vice-president in history; he has lost two wars; he has lost every ally; he is despised in much of the country; he is now going to be the center of all the questions that the Libby guilty verdict raise. Why did he get so exercized about a two-bit critic during a critical time in the Iraq war? Why would he risk losing his most trusted aide by coordinating a media sting on a minor political opponent? Why would he risk committing a crime to pursue Wilson unless he had something...

The campaigns of Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton are in sync not only on the geopolitical importance of Selma, Ala., but also on the issue of whether homosexuality is moral or not. This afternoon, the Obama campaign released the following statement: “As the New York Times reported today, I do not agree with General Pace that homosexuality is immoral. Attempts to divide people like this have consumed too much of our politics over the past six years.”

Dear Larry, I'm a Democrat, and I enjoy your work. And I get very frustrated by those on the left who whine and are thin on the facts. This brings me to my reason for this letter: Global warming. The global warming debate is unique to humanity. If those who advocate "wait and convince more scientists" are wrong, following their advice may affect hundreds of millions of people, with possibly many killed by famine and flooding. On the other hand, if the people who advocate doing something now are wrong, the worst is mostly economic. That's a price I'm more...

Asked if she believed homosexuality was immoral, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton declined to answer the question in a television interview this morning and said it was for “others to conclude.” General Peter Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in a recent interview that he personally believed homosexuality was immoral and that this view was a factor in his opposition to gays serving openly in the military. Mrs. Clinton, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, supports allowing gays to serve, which would amount to a change in her husband’s “don’t ask don’t tell” policy. She has...

As a man who long endured more than his share of nasty, unwarranted abuse from journalists, the philosophical Al Gore must be amused by the happy transformation of his clippings. The same press corps that once snarled for his blood is now smooching his boots -- an implicit apology that might be gratifying to the former future president, if only he were still naive enough to value their esteem. The sudden fashion for favorable comment won't influence any thoughtful American's opinion of Gore, but it should remind us of the dismal media performance that did such a terrible disservice to...

KEYSTONE — Global warming is the hottest story of our time, and it will get even bigger as the full implications of melting ice caps and rising sea levels percolate through the media pipeline and into general public awareness, a panel of journalists said last weekend during the American Bar Association's environmental law conference. The discussion was focused on how the media has covered the story and whether or not public perception of global warming has changed in recent months and years. Among the questions the panelists tried to answer is why it has taken so long for the story...

The decision came despite a lawsuit that says the training will harm marine life. The Navy announced this week that it will perform mid-range sonar exercises off the U.S. coast, including off of Jacksonville's beaches, for two years despite an environmental group's lawsuit insisting the Navy comply with federal laws that protect whales and other marine mammals.Secretary of the Navy Gordon England said Tuesday that he was tapping a national defense exemption from the Marine Mammal Protection Act that will allow mid-frequency active sonar use during major training exercises. Congress included the exemption in the National Defense Authorization Act of...

Websense raises the alarm about a phishing Trojan that uses a new technique to cloak its activity. The Web security company said that the Trojan, which installs itself as an Internet Explorer helper object, waits for the user to enter information in specific Web site forms -- particularly online banking sites -- then zaps the stolen data back to the attacker. What's unique about the new Trojan, said Websense, is that it delivers that data via ICMP packets. Keylogging Trojans usually transmit purloined usernames and passwords via e-mail or a HTTP POST command. Both can be easily spotted. "Instead, this...

Couple pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges Consultants who took Brownsville Navigation District officials to China and paid U.S. Rep. Solomon P. Golden Venture Survivors Face Another Hurdle NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Few Americans have lived through the kind of adventures that brought Arming He to the United States from his Chinese homeland. Seeking a better life, he made a dangerous escape across a mountainous border, traveled by ship to Africa, where he was marooned for months, then crammed into the hold of a rusted freighter carrying 295 other refugees. His ordeal didn't end when the ship, the Golden Venture, ran aground in Queens in 1993 in an ill-fated attempt to unload its battered and starving human cargo. Ten people died trying...

NEW YORK -- A Chinatown businesswoman who prosecutors described as one of the biggest "snakeheads'' of all time was sentenced to 35 years in prison Thursday for her role in organizing human smuggling schemes, including the doomed Golden Venture voyage in 1993. Cheng Chui Ping, 57, pleaded for more than an hour for a lenient sentence, saying she was but a simple, hardworking immigrant who loved America and had been terrorized by Chinatown gangs. U.S. District Judge Michael Mukasey listened patiently, then dismissed the speech as ``simply incredible'' and gave Cheng the maximum penalty allowed by law. Evidence at the...

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Ku Klux Klan plans to rally in Austin to support the gay marriage amendment set for the Nov. 8 ballot. The rally planned on the steps of city hall the Saturday before the election will urge voters to favor proposition 2. However, some who support proposition 2 don't welcome the KKK's assistance. One such person is Pastor Ryan Rush of Bannockburn Baptist Church. Rush said that a group that would come in that is characterized as hateful and bigoted is not welcome in this city. He said he doesn't want the Klan as a partner on...

Yes, it's their 16th annual "festival," but "SWEET SIXTEEN Cruisin' for a Kiss" (see the website) is just a little too obvious of an in-your-face double entendre. RoanokePride, Inc. is the guiding force behind the month-long series of activities known collectively as Pride. The centerpiece of our Pride celebration is the Pride-in-the-Park festival. More than 100 cats have been seized from a woman's home in Duluth's West Duluth neighborhood. The Duluth Animal Control and Animal Allies are asking for the public's help in finding homes for the cats. There are too many to be housed at the local animal shelter. People can adopt the cats or be foster owners until space becomes available at the shelter. Authorities say the cats seemed to be OK and had enough food and water. The woman living with the cats was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Authorities seized the cats after a complaint by the...

A long-time Caledonia Elementary School music teacher and band director was arrested late Monday on charges of possessing and distributing child pornography. Craig Gieser, 48, appeared in Third District Court on Tuesday morning, May 3. He had been hospitalized for several days and then left the area with a friend before being located Monday evening. According to the police report, local authorities were alerted after an undercover detective in New Hampshire, posing as a 14-year-old boy in an internet chatroom, attracted the attention of the suspect. A person using the internet name cgiese1010 asked the “boy” for pictures, and the...

There are now more cats than dogs in the United States (78 million cats vs. 65 million cats in 2003, according to American Animal Hospital Association and the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association). So, here are feline facts to amaze, delight and inspire anyone from the ailurophile to the casual cat fancier: • Kittens are born blue-eyed. If their eyes change colors, it generally occurs at 4 to 5 weeks of age. Kittens open their eyes at 7 to 10 days but can't hear until they're about 14 days old. • The cat is the only animal that purrs. Domestic...

After reading Sunday's New York Times, my first inclination was to call 9-1-1 and ask police to put St. Paul's Mac-Groveland and Crocus Hill neighborhoods, as well as Minneapolis' uberliberal Uptown enclave, on suicide watch. I was particularly worried about Heather Martens and the other folks over at Citizens for a Safer Minnesota, the local adjunct for the mathematically challenged Million Moms. The "paper of record" ran what must have been a painful front-page story for readers and staff alike. The Old Gray Lady admitted what many of us have known all along: Sen. Dianne Feinstein's assault-weapon ban had little...

How can anyone believe Justice Minister Irwin Cotler when he claims the government’s same-sex legislation will not affect religious freedoms? Over and over again the Liberals have proven that they either don't understand what freedom of religion is, or they don't really care about protecting it. I would rather trust Don Cherry to run a charm school than trust the Liberals to protect the free exercise of religion. Not that long ago, amendments to hate crime legislation designed to protect religious expression were voted down by the Liberals, and church leaders were threatened with the loss of their tax-exempt status...

I like feeling wanted, but over the past several months I've noticed I'm getting pinged for things that I don't know (and unfortunately don't really care) about. The only ping list I remember signing up for is PJ's DUmmie FUnnies. Most of the other stuff is interesting, and it's nice to be invited into conversations, I'm just wondering if this is a common occurance with FReepers...or am I just odd? And really most of this stuff didn't start until I started with DUmmie FUnnies... or maybe that's the only time I really started noticing it. Any answers? Thanks

Here is a list of ping list subjects and who keeps the list. This is meant to be a public list. Please feel free to copy and store for your own convenience. Add to it if you know of any lists not listed.

MEXICO CITY -- Scientists working off Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula began using sound waves on Friday to search for information about an asteroid that may have wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. The research projected started despite concerns among environmental activists who say the technology could harm whales, sea turtles and several varieties of fish in the Gulf of Mexico. Mexican authorities say the project is within acceptable limits and will be closely monitored. Sergio Chan Lugo, the Yucatan state representative for Mexico's environmental protection agency, told local media the sound blasts began early Friday. The project includes marine...

The Biggest Loser By J.C. Roberts While watching Ryan get crowned as the “winner” on the NBC Reality Show, “The Biggest Loser,” I started thinking; What if the show had nothing to do with weight loss? What if it just had to do with life in general? Who, or what, would win? I would like to nominate the Equus asinus, better known as the donkey. According to the Democratic National Committee web-site, the donkey first symbolized a Democrat during Andrew Jackson’s 1828 campaign for President. Jackson, it seems, wanted to poke fun at opponents who were calling him a jackass,...
