"The U.S. and the EU Should Get Used to the Idea of a Nuclear Iran"

A. Savyon, The Middle East Media Research Institue:

Head of Iranian Nuclear Negotiating Team Sirus Nasseri: The U.S. and the EU should "get used to the idea of a nuclear Iran."

Introduction

At the end of the first three-month period of negotiations stipulated in the November 2004 Paris Agreement signed by Iran and the EU Three (Britain, France, and Germany), a steering committee of representatives of all the parties met for a joint assessment of the situation. It was decided that the negotiations would continue as Iran maintained its suspension of uranium-enrichment activity.(1) At the same time, the commanders of Iran's Revolutionary Guards and armed forces announced that they were prepared for a possible military attack. ... [The following is an excerpt]

Iran Declares its Military Preparedness

In recent months, commanders of Iran's Revolutionary Guards and armed forces have announced their complete preparedness for a possible military attack on Iran's nuclear installations and other sensitive sites. Iranian spokesmen have declared that Iran's response would be formidable. Recently, the London daily Al-Hayat published a report on Iran's preparedness for an American or Israeli attack. The following are excerpts:(30)

"Iranian military sources say that the armed forces and the Revolutionary Guards have made all the field preparations for handling a surprise attack on targets within Iran. [These preparations] are not limited to the nuclear installations, which are dispersed among the cities and various locations - Bushehr, Isfahan, Arak, Natanz, Tehran, Yazd, and others - but also include military and industrial plants and dams.

"...Iran's military command has taken into account the possibility of a disruption of [communications] between military posts and the central command... As a precautionary measure, the command has ordered all military and Revolutionary Guards sectors to respond swiftly - within no more than an hour and without waiting for orders - against pre-selected targets, [in light of anticipated] international political pressures that might force Iran to not respond.

"The objective is to deliver a harsh blow to the U.S. and its ally Israel at the outset, and then to expand the arena, in light of international efforts to contain the crisis and limit its scope and intensity, so as to ignite the whole region. This way Iran will assure its right to respond.

"...All the countries that host U.S. military forces - particularly Iraq, CENTCOM [U.S. Central Command] in Al-Siliya [Qatar], the Al-'Odeid base in Qatar, and the Fifth Fleet command in Bahrain - are among the sites Iran might consider as targets. However, the biggest fish of all is Israel, which is likely to suffer 'hellfire' - particularly when the Iranian response 'will use [varied] weapons and reach other targets that the aggressors are not expecting them [to reach].'

Iran Declares its Military Preparedness

I guess they have a new group of mine detectors. During the Iran/Iraq war in the 80's, Iran recruited adolescents who cleared mine fields by running across them. They were recruited with promises of going immediately to heaven if they were killed.

The mullahs don't hear so good.

Gee Dubya said that the USA WOULD NOT TOLERATE a nuclear armed Iran.

Now, how many other countries have misunderestimated him?

I doubt if the Nuclear talks can cause the collapse of the regime in Iran. It just wastes our time.

The only way to weaken the regime in Iran is to press their government regarding their poor record of human right issues.
That is what mullahs hate to speak about.

The EU might, the U.S. is much less likely to do so. There's no way in hell the Israelis ever will.

They might have not choice. BTW, if Iran gets nuclear the outcome will be that USA and Israel will improve the relations with Iran and as a result Iran will become more pro-Western. The law of unintended consequences works both ways.

This dreamy theory will NEVER work in the case of the mullahs controlling Iran. Remember Iranian nation IS already pro-Western, or more accurately pro-USA. Not so the mullahs. They understand existentially that the day they are described "pro-USA" is the day they are sitting in an Iranian jail waiting their trial for Crimes Against Humanity.

The chances they will go quietly into that good night is nil.

Not with the nukes. The rule is: if you want respect get the bomb, when you have respect everyone is your friend and instead of going to jail you decide how the tribunals are run.

If Serbs had the nukes their leaders would not be in Hague and the war would not take place. Strong mullahs are friendly mullahs :)

Rules don't apply to mullahs in control of Iran. We must throw away all preconcieved notions when it comes to this turbaned clan. They are an anomaly and cannot be pegged. The 26 year history of Iran which has tried to come to terms with this demon should be a cautionary tale.

"Strong mullahs are friendly mullahs."

You must be joking, right???

Only half joking. I think that Iranian mullahs got demonized unfairly. After all it was Iraq which attack Iran (with the Western support). Iran did not attack anybody.

Iranian revolution was more a reaction against shah dictatorship and the religious fervor in Iran is getting milder every year. BTW, before shah was imposed, Iran was led by the secular moderates like Mossadegh.

OK you are really confusing Iranian people with the turbaned clan who controls Iran. They are not one and the same. You think the mullahs got demoralized "unfairly"? What? The mullahs set foot on the Persian soil running. Their pillage and plunder and murder NEVER seized. PLEASE read the early history of the Iranian so-called "revolution" which I think is a sham word for what really took place in Iran.

Yes, true, Iraq attacked Iran when Saddam saw how the mullahs ravaged the Iranian military of its rank and file. He believed he had the best chance of seizing the oil rich southern region of the country. The summary murder and executions continued until the Iraq invasion. So in a way the war with Iraq put a stop to the killings when the mullahs finally realized their sheer stupidity of their depraved murdering and destruction of the Iranian national army. Don't ever hold a soft spot for that beast which has been nothing but pure evilness.

The religious fervor in Iran has not only gotten milder, it has pretty much departed because of what Islamic extremism is associated with for Iranian people, which is the mullahs' rule and the ruinations, degradation and suppression of Iranians. The people loathe the mullahs and all that they symbolize.

And on the subject of the Shah and Mossadegh, truth and the history of the times is so convoluted and muddied that it is best left to future Iranians to sort that one out and decide who did and meant well for Iran and Iranians. IMO, both Mossadegh and the Shah were patriots caught in international geopolitical machinations much larger than themselves. These internationalists coveted a weak Iran and influence over its politics and internals, for ever.

Why, I find the "subject of the Shah and Mossadegh" very interesting. Fitfy years is enough to sort things through - no reason to wait for the "future Iranians".

Yeah I agree, the subject of the Shah and Mossadegh is fascinating, even Shakespearean. But like everything else to do with history of modern Iran and USA - which is invariably tangled with that of British government - it has been so politicized and convoluted, that it is hard to discuss it rationally, and unbiasedly.

My own opinion is that both the Shah and Mossadegh were victims, and both were nationalist patriots. They were by no means enemies, or even serious adversaries until the international conspiracies got underway. I think the Shah has been thoroughly dehumanized by Western media, and all his accomplishments ignored or discounted. And the people who have been doing that are still at it with a severity of passion which is baffling. That is why it is hard to arrive at truths when there is so much misinformation and half truths.
