A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day....04-25-05....Military Monday

A Few of FR's Finest
....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders;  tell a few jokes;  learn a new word;  write poetry;  pray for those in need;  and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

The Power Of Our Limits

Read:
Exodus 4:10-17

Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say. —Exodus 4:12

Bible In One Year: Psalm 43-45

cover Moses, on the occasion of his call by God, made excuses. "O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am slow of speech and slow of tongue" (Exodus 4:10).

The wording suggests that Moses had a speech impediment—perhaps he stuttered. But the Lord said to him, "Who has made man's mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the Lord?" (v.11).

Our impairments, our disabilities, our handicaps are not accidents; they are God-designed. He uses every one of our flaws for His own glory. God's way of dealing with what we call "limitations" is not to remove them but to endow them with strength and use them for good.

In the New Testament, Paul the apostle referred to an unspecified "thorn in the flesh" that he repeatedly asked the Lord to take from him (2 Corinthians 12:7-8). But God said, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness" (v.9).

Paul even learned to "take pleasure" in his troubles. "Most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me," he said (v.9). "For when I am weak, then I am strong" (v.10). —David Roper

All faithful saints who walk with God
Through weakness learn to trust His Word;
They're not immune to pain or tears,
But learn to rise above their fears. —D. De Haan

God's strength is best seen in our weakness.

SOLDIER'S FUNERAL, TEXAS STYLE

People can talk about Texas all they want, but this has renewed my faith in mankind. God bless America. At least they give some respect for a soldier who has died. God bless them. Take a look at these pictures.

What follows is a message from Vicki Pierce about her nephew James' funeral (he was serving our country in Iraq): "I'm back, it was certainly a quick trip, but I have to also say it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. There is a lot to be said for growing up in a small town in Texas. The service itself was impressive with wonderful flowers and sprays, a portrait of James, his uniform and boots, his awards and ribbons. There was lots of military brass and an eloquent (though inappropriately longwinded) Baptist preacher.

There were easily 1000 people at the service, filling the church sanctuary as well as the fellowship hall and spilling out into the parking lot. However, the most incredible thing was what happened following the service on the way to the cemetery. We went to our cars and drove to the cemetery escorted by at least 10 police cars with lights flashing and some other emergency vehicles, with Texas Rangers handling traffic.

Everyone on the road who was not in the procession, pulled over, got out of their cars, and stood silently and respectfully, some put their hands over their hearts, some had small flags. Shop keepers came outside with their customers and did the same thing. Construction workers stopped their work, got off their equipment and put their hands over their hearts, too. There was no noise whatsoever except a few birds and the quiet hum of cars going slowly up the road.

When we turned off the highway suddenly there were teenage boys along both sides of the street about every 20 feet or so, all holding large American flags on long flag poles, and again with their hands on their hearts. We thought at first it was the Boy Scouts or 4H club or something, but it continued .... for two and a half miles. Hundreds of young people, standing silently on the side of the road with flags. At one point we passed an elementary school, and all the children were outside, shoulder to shoulder holding flags ... kindergartners, handicapped, teachers, staff, everyone. Some held signs of love and support.

Then came teenage girls and younger boys, all holding flags. Then adults. Then families. All standing silently on the side of the road. No one spoke, not even the very young children. The last few turns found people crowded together holding flags or with their hands on their hearts. Some were on horseback.

The military presence...at least two generals, a fist full of colonels, and representatives from every branch of the service, plus the color guard which attended James, and some who served with him ... was very impressive and respectful, but the love and pride from this community who had lost one of their own was the most amazing thing I've ever been privileged to witness. I've attached some pictures, some are blurry (we were moving), but you can get a small idea of what this was like. Thanks so much for all the prayers and support."

These photos are awesome!!

Are you crying yet? I am, and unshamedly. God Bless our soldiers!!!!!!!!!!

Thank You Lady X

Please, please look at #5 for a thrilling account (with her photographs of the grand tributes) of a funeral by an aunt of a 'Fallen Hero' in Iraq, and how their small Texas town showed their respect!!!

It is TOTALLY AWESOME!!

Thank you, Mayor, and thank you Lady, for giving us this tribute! Makes me very proud to be a Texan and an American!

I don't know how it is elsewhere, but we in Texas always pull over to the side of the road and stop when a funeral procession goes by. But this........I'm speechless (well, almost! LOL)

We do in South Carolina, too, and all over the South.

Thank you, Chong.
That kind of patriotism and pride was instilled in me when as a child of 7, I listened to the accounts of the attack on Pearl Harbor that began our involvement in WWII.
ALL of America was immersed in it and pride was a "given," unlike some modern times.

If you look at my Profie Page, you'll see I served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict as a Classroom Subjects Instructor of women recruits at Parris Island.

Later were years as a military wife - in 1969 changing to retail management, and then 19 in the medical field...
a true All American Woman!
LOL

If you look at the top of this thread where Billie has the collages of veterans or family of posters who served, you'll see my photograph near the center, with TexasCowboy to my left...

'Nuther link with TC, Gramma --

When he went in the Marine Corps in San Diego, he was the Right Guide for his platoon.
When I went to Parris Island (before TC, 5 years behind me), I was the Right Guide for my platoon, and that August I was out front with my Company A Commander, carrying the American Flag as Guidon Bearer, leading a parade --
out front of the 8 full companies participating in the Dedication Ceremony for the Iwo Jima Monument on the Parade Deck.

The sculptor did that one (paid for by Marines only) as his prototype for the later one in D.C.

Fantastic honor and moment in my life!

A Soldier's Funeral - Texas Style

SOLDIER'S FUNERAL, TEXAS STYLE

Specialist James Kiehl, age 22, from Comfort, Texas, was killed, along with six other soldiers at the same place and the same day that Jessica Lynch was taken prisoner. His body was one of those that our special forces heroes dug up with their bare hands near the hospital in Iraq. They held the funeral service in Comfort at the Baptist Church, and then took him ten miles to Center Point, Texas, and buried him.

Thank You for A Soldier's Funeral, Texas Style. A perfect compliment to Military Monday at The Finest.

Today marks the anniversary of the Fall of Saigon. As it so happens, The Traveling Wall is in our area with closing ceremonies Tuesday evening.

Mrs d and I stopped by to pay our respects to honor those whose names are inscribed on the black panels this afternoon.

I've been in Florida on some of the main thoroughfare in Lauderdale and watched people cut in and out of a procession. But then I've also seen them cutting off the police and ambulance and other emergency vehicles down there also.

I found this on your page and liked it so much I had to put it here where everyone could see it.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails. (1 Corinthians 13: 4-8a NIV)

Wow. That soldier's family was given a gift worth more than all the gold in the world. What a wonderful tribute to an American hero.

Now THAT is the Texas I remember and love.

Contrast that tribute to a fallen soldier with this one:

Not too long ago in Atlanta, GA a young man of 19 yrs. enlisted in the Army right after graduation from high school. He was killed that same year in Iraq. His family arranged that his funeral procession stop at his former high school for a few minutes that his friends may pay their respects. The parents notified the principal and superintendent of their intentions and requested that the students be notified and permission granted that they be excused from classes at that short time.

When the procession stopped at the school on the day of his funeral no one was outside at all. Unbeknown to the parents, the principal had decided to ignore their request. A teacher along with about 10 students finally showed up before the procession had to move on.

I needed three tissues that day when this got reported.

It's good to know the patriots heart still beats strong in America.

HE HOLDS IT ALL TOGETHER

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth"...but when was
the beginning? Since only the Creator is eternal, it is reasonable to view
'the beginning' as the start of time, a dimension like a window in the
middle of eternity. If the stars were not created until God spoke them into
existence on the fourth day, what is the meaning of 'heavens'? The original
Hebrew word actually means 'stretched out space'! In other words, God
created even the empty space in which to place the earth!

"For by Jesus all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth,
visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or
authorities--all things have been created through Jesus and for Him. He is
before all things, and in Jesus all things hold together." Colossians 1:16-17

Atoms, the building blocks of all physical things, are composed of 3
elements: space, matter and energy. Although the raw materials for planet
Earth were created, it was only formless matter; void of something
necessary for sustaining life. That missing 'something' needed to bring
matter together in forming Earth was the third aspect: energy.

God works everything in logical order and His sequence of creative acts is
no exception. Visible light is not only the narrow band of color we see
with our eyes. Light is just one of at least 75 octaves included in the
entire electromagnetic spectrum. As God spoke "Let there be light!", matter
was energized and the basic elements took shape, initiating the physical
laws that rule all forms of matter. Particles were now in motion and
operating in time! And all of it was - and is - held together by our Lord;
"For in Him we live and move and exist." (Acts 17:28)

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through
Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men." John 1:1-4

A most comforting truth is that the sovereignty of God extends to the daily
details of our lives. He's concerned about us and His control extends over
all our days, working all things to our good!

By Leslie B.

Rest in the Lord and know that All Is Well. Do not allow worry or fear to
enter into your heart, but stand firm and know that if God said it, then it
will surely come to pass. (Ephesians 6:10-14) (Numbers 23:19-20)

Morning to all the Finest FReeper FRiends Rus, Meg, Lady --- Thank you to the wonderful memories of and tribute to one of our wonderful young men, James Kiehl, who gave his all in this generation of many other men and women who have been willing to step up and do their part. And what an appropriate name for the community.. Comfort! Power went off last night until about 6:30 this AM. we had about 12" snow total here. Further east in snow belt there was considerably more. There seemed to be little/no work done on roads....drivng home last night from our renewal services was a bit tenuous. Wonder how much it would have been had the ground NOT been warmed by weeks of very warm weather. The next few days are to be warm & so this will be gone soon hopefully. Billie, I did get your FReepmail. Thanks for info.. I did not know the
