Iran's Secret Deal with India

An excerpt:

Iran is looking to India to frustrate U.S. efforts to isolate Iran economically. Iran has made significant progress in developing a pipeline from southeastern Iran through Pakistan into India. The deal will provide India with 7.5 million tons of natural gas annually. India needs the energy as its economy is growing by 8% annually. The U.S. has been trying to convince India not to conclude the deal, but it appears unlikely to succeed.

But the deal does not end there. According to the Wall Street Journal it also includes $25 billion dollars worth of military equipment. India has been a major producer of military equipment for Russia and Iran is a new source of military sales. This new relationship has resulted in a secret deal:

According to Jane's Defense Weekly and Defense News, Tehran and New Delhi inked a secret defense agreement in 2003 providing India with access to Iranian military bases in the event of a war with regional rival Pakistan. This is hardly surprising; both nations have mutual concerns regarding security threats that could emerge from Pakistan, particularly if Islamic radicals ever succeeded in toppling Gen. Pervez Musharraf from power.

Not really surprising. It appears India will, like Russia, attempt to extract every yuan, dollar, yen, and riyal it can from the respective countries.

It's called enlightened self interest and everyone does it. If we don't like it we have to make it worth their while not to, either in potential benefits or problems which make the deal less attractive to them.

Until then, good for them.

We could pay off the Indians to not open the pipeline until the Iranian regime is gone. True, they want energy, not cash.

We could always sabotage the pipeline and blame the Pakistanis. Foster some more chaos between the two, now that Kashmir seems to have quieted down somewhat.

This is a serious development. The Iranian Mullahs are vermin.
India is only helping to prop us these despots with these actions. $25 billion in defense deals??? What the heck will India sell to Iran. Hopefully not the BrahMos Cruise missile.

The people of India should also see the difference between an Islamic dictatorship like Iran and a genuine democracy like Israel. While the former are opportunists, Israel is a genuine friend of India. India should understand that any weapons sold to Iran will be pointed towards Israel and the free world.

I'm not buying this report. $25 billion? please.

Anyway, "It's the gas, stupid." When the need for gas makes our President hold hands with a Saudi Prince, we shouldn't be surprised when an energy deficient India looks to Iran for energy sources. What are we gonna tell the Indians - Let your economy slow down because we don't like Iran?!

Mr. "R": A Candidate with a Record!

May 04, 2005
Iran va Jahan
Shaheen Fatemi

As the 17 June 2005 approaches, there is more and more noise about Mr. Rafsanjani as the regime’s last hope for the ninth so-called presidential elections. As it is normal in democratic countries, anyone running for the first time for public office needs to present a platform. But if this person has already served in public office, it is his record of the past achievements that can serve as a basis of judgment for the electorate. Mr. “R” has been continuously in-office for the past quarter-of-a-century and indeed has a “record!”

If there is one person who should be held totally responsible for every major decision that has been taken by this regime for the past 26 years, that person is Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. He has been in charge from day one and has not let go with control of power for one day. While Khomeini was alive, he held many influential positions such as speaker of the parliament and he was always the main manipulator of the old man.

When Khomeini died Mr. Rafsanjani was elected as president in 1989 and re-elected in 1993. After 8 years, because of term limitation, he could not run again but he refused to retire. Instead, he invented a new office for himself which in effect placed him in control of real power. This new position was chairmanship of the ‘Council of Expediency” which was supposedly there to resolve any disagreement between the Majlis (the parliament) and the “Guardian Council.” In other words, the newly created body, headed by Mr. R. has had the final say!

In short, Mr. “R” is the embodiment of every aspect and every action of the Islamic Republic and therefore, responsible for its wrong doings. Unfortunately no one inside the country is able to raise any charges against this candidate. One very courageous journalist, Akbar Ganji, who in a very limited manner tried to do some investigative reporting about the Rafsanjani Financial Empire, has been rotting in solitary confinement for the past four years.

The following list is only a partial and incomplete summary of charges related to the three areas of violation of human rights, practice and encouragement of terrorism and identification with corruption that are often associated with Mr. Rafsanjani:

Violation of Human Rights

Mass killings of political prisoners

Political serial killings in Iran

Holding thousands of political prisoners

Political oppression against the opposition

Jailing of Akbar Ganji and other dissident journalist who tried to expose his corrupt practices.

Oppression of religious minorities

Suppression of civil liberties

Censorship and closure of publications

Gross violation of women’s rights

Jamming satellite TV and radio stations

Practice and Encouragement of International and Domestic Terrorism

Involvement in terrorist activities in the Middle East, Europe and Argentina

Playing a key role in the 1979 Occupation of the US Embassy in Tehran and holding hostages for 444 days.

Murdering of journalists and other opponents

Execution, flogging, stoning and amputation of limbs in public

Assassination of political dissidents outside of Iran

Intimidation of opponents and forcing them to flee the country resulting in millions of Iranian refugees throughout the world.

Pursuit of weapons of mass destruction

Engaging in xenophobic and anti-somatic oratory as “temporary Friday-Prayer leader.”

Involvement in Massive Corruption

Amassing a phenomenal personal fortune from corrupt practices and transfer of funds abroad.

Promotion of corruption, prostitution and addiction.

Expropriation of private property

Setting up phony foundations for personal gains

Setting up phony corporation for receiving stolen government property and contracts.

Engaging in fraudulent privatization schemes for private gains

In a free and democratic society any politician faced with such a long list of accusations would be answering charges in a court of law and if convicted serving time in jail instead of running for the highest office in land.

Iran’s ex-Foreign Minister hints at official role in terror abroad Wed. 4 May 2005

Iran Focus

Tehran, May 04 - In an interview with a government-run website, Ali-Akbar Velayati, Iran’s former Foreign Minister and a senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is also a candidate in the forthcoming June 17 presidential elections, hinted at official responsibility for terrorist operations abroad against its opponents.

In an interview with the Baztab website yesterday, Velayati referring to the events in the 1990s, said, "Relations with Europe, through much work and the use of diplomatic techniques over a long period, were such that it maintained our national honour and dignity, however with the chain of events, such as the murder of Bakhtiar, the Mykonos case, and the events in Austria and Belgium, these initiatives suffered a setback."

Shahpour Bakhtiar was murdered in Paris in August 1991, while in September 1992 four Iranian Kurdish opponents of the regime were killed in a Greek restaurant called Mykonos in Berlin. Abdolrahman Ghasemlou, head of the Democratic Party of Kurdistan was murdered in Vienna in 1989. Velayati's allusion to the Belgian "event" refers to the discovery of three huge 320-mm mortars inside an Iranian ship in the port of Antwerp in Belgium in 1996. Consequent investigations by Belgian police determined that the regime's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) was planning to use these mortars to attack the residence of Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance (NCRI), north of Paris.

Following a three-year review, a Berlin court announced in 1997 that a special committee, made up of Khamenei, former President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Velayati, and Ali Fallahiyan (then Intelligence Minister), was directly responsible for the terrorist activities by the Iranian regime abroad and issued an international warrant for these individuals' arrest.

Velayati’s acknowledgement was greeting with alarm by Iran’s state-run media, with one news outlet stating that the admission would have dire consequences for the regime.
