Benedict XVI swamps Jesuit mag's boat (Reese out as editor of America)

The editor of the Jesuit weekly America is leaving the magazine after the Vatican received complaints about articles he published on touchy issues such as same-sex marriages and stem cell research, Jesuit officials said Friday.

The Rev. Thomas J. Reese, a widely respected expert on the Catholic Church and the Vatican who was editor for seven years, is being replaced by his deputy, the Rev. Drew Christiansen, the magazine said in a statement.

Jesuit officials in Rome and the United States, who spoke on condition they not be identified, said some American bishops had contacted the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith about articles in the magazine over the years that had presented both sides of controversies over sensitive church issues.

The Vatican has had a sometimes tense relationship with the Jesuits, some of whose members in the past have questioned papal pronouncements on birth control, priestly celibacy and the ban on women priests.

The magazine had made a point of publishing broad points of view — including some that clashed with church teaching — irking some Catholics in the United States and Rome, the officials said.

Some of the hot-button issues included gay priests, stem-cell research, whether Catholic politicians can be denied communion if they support abortion rights, and same-sex unions.

The magazine also wrote about a Vatican document that outlined the idea that divine truth is most fully revealed in Christianity and the Catholic Church in particular.

The document "Dominus Iesus" was issued in 2000 by the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith — the office that was headed by German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger before he became Pope Benedict XVI last month.

Critics complained the document could set back Church efforts to reach out to other Christians and believers outside the Church.

Sure, his term is up June 1, but he sees the handwriting on the wall. B-16 is already making waves!

"The magazine had made a point of publishing broad points of view — including some that clashed with church teaching..."

Reese is now free to start his own Vatican-free "Catholic" blog...

Why would a Catholic magazine need to present the devil's position for balance?

Glad they showed than editor the door.

He was terrible on TV immediately following JPII's death. Only good thing was that you couldn't take him too seriously 'cause he seemed so emasulcated.

I'm not sure what his departure means, though. If it's a Jesuit publication aren't there many more where he came from?

The Rev. Thomas J. Reese, a widely respected expert on the Catholic Church and the Vatican

Respected by whom? Certainly not by orthodox Catholics.

Moral Absolutes Ping.

Why be a Catholic and disagree with basic Catholic teachings and standards? Why not invent his own sect?

New broom sweeps clean. I like it.

Let me know if you want on/off this pinglist.

Note: I don't mean to be disrespectful to Pope Benedict in comparing him to a broom. Looks like house cleaning time. I hope this is just the prelude.

Finally!!! Someone with the moral integrity and courage to tell the truth and to begin a long-over-due housecleaning. This is such a blessing!

If B16 is to restore the authority of Rome in America, I think he will have to pick something to make an example of.

The Jesuits are a reasonable place to start, but, as you point out, there are a lot of them, and many of them appear to share a commom purpose with Fr. Reeves.

Can the pope inhibit or discipline the whole Jesuit order in some way?

Sure he can. The entire order was suppressed in 1770 by Pope Clement XIV, following decades of hostility from within the Church and from the European powers. They were restored by Pius VII in 1814. If the pope can suppress them he can do less than that.

As an aside, the suppression is why the California missions are Franciscan: originally begun by the Jesuits, they had to give them up and the Franciscans took them over and built more.

My first choice for disciplinary action would have been Kerry's Paulist "church" in Boston. That outfit needs to be shut down.

Exactly. Plenty of publications do that, already.

Just imagine... if every time Jesus spoke to the crowds He was merely one member of a panel of speakers who presented all the sides to every issue.

He would have given us a "mess" instead of a "message."

Yes, the Paulist Center is heretical-but if the Pope has to reach into each bishop's diocese and shut down every heretical and schismatic church or organization he will die of old age before making much of an impression.

The Paulist Center is O'Malley's job.

I'm concerned for B16 that he not be bound down by hundreds and hundreds of Paulist Centers, like Gulliver in Lilliput. If he wants to restore order, he needs one or two very big targets, for which the imposition of his will on them produces shock waves that influence all the little ones.

Supressing the Society of Jesus would fill the bill.

I don't really know, to be honest w/you.

I think he could suppress the Order, although I'm not sure how that's done, but I think it was done once before.

It's a crying shame, what they've been reduced to. Their contributions to science, humanities, etc are sizeable. And they had hearts of Lions and courage of Marines. I'm pretty sure they're responsible for developing language for the deaf.

You would think they wouldn't want to destroy such a well-earned reputation, but they're like clinton democrats as opposed to JFK Democrats. Both were flawed, but JFK loved his Country and wouldn't have wanted to lay her low.
