Katie Couric's 'Today' Plummets; GMA Gains

Katie Couric's days as America's leading morning lady may be coming to an end.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that Couric's "Today" show saw its lead over ABC's rival "Good Morning America" fall sharply - to about 70,000 viewers last week. The paper said the estimates are based on preliminary information from Nielsen Media Research.

"Today" has led the ratings pack since 1995. But the latest numbers show that momentum may be on the side of ABC.

"In recent years, the lead by 'Today' over 'Good Morning America' has been as much as two million viewers. Thus far, for the season that began in September, 'Today' (average audience about 6 million viewers) has led 'Good Morning America' (about 5.4 million) by more than 600,000 viewers."

NBC has moved to improve ratings by dumping the show's executive producer last month. But NBC's troubles may be deja vu, when its ratings fell at "Today" as its then host Bryant Gumbel went from likable to politically correct and nasty.

Couric's reputation as a liberal diva hasn't washed well with the public, and may be the real cause behind "Today"'s woes.

Can't come soon enough.

Both shows are painfully liberal. The last time I watched GMA just happened to be the day that Curt Schilling said "vote Bush". Not boycotting it because of that, just don't watch tv much.

They were so horrified by that, it was like they ( the whole crew was groaning in agony ) just got kicked in the nads and Gibson said it was "divisive". It really is something to watch over and over again for those who want to get into the mind of Democrats. They influence thru "message spell"...even one lone dissenting voice can break the spell. Similar to their reaction to that "Jeff Gannon" reporter, they got nothing if they lose the lockstep.

How desperate is TODAY?

They've bought advertising time on FOX NEWS -- during BRIT HUME'S show!

(Had they bothered to WATCH Brit's show, they'd know that they're routinely a laughingstock thereon)

The Today Show and Good Morning America?

Talk about quality programming.

Why toss in a little Ellen DeGeneres, a few Tampon and Viagra commercials, a bag of chips and a liter of Coke and we have entertainment!

Have Ann Coulter do the Today show. I guarantee twice the viewership.

Thanks for the ping. I guess Katie & Co. haven't figured out the subliminable reason for their ratings drop - our FR threads ;-)

Guess what? I'm on the Neilson rating thing this week and Fox News is getting a big hit from me this week. Not Greta but OReilly, Hannity and Fox and Friends in the morning.

" . . . about 70,000 viewers . . . "

That isn't a large enough number to justify keeping the show on. Couldn't happen to a more deserving person.

Isn't that the truth. And let's remove Katie from the Olympics coverage as well.

I really like what Ann says and writes, but (and I know this is going to be blasphemy on FR) she acts a bit like a left wing looney much of the time. Instead of being calm and professional (the big edge conservatives have over lefties) when on the scream-over shows, she screams over just like the lefties and resorts to lefty tactics like name calling and off subject sarcasm. Sort of diminishes her message a bit (IMHO)
