A Few of FR's Finest ....Every Day
FR is a Treasure Trove of talented, compassionate, patriotic, wonderful people who gather every day to discuss the latest news and issues; salute and support our military and our leaders; tell a few jokes; learn a new word; write poetry; pray for those in need; and congratulate those who are deserving. Thank you, Jim Robinson, for giving us the vehicle in which we can express ourselves.
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.

A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001
So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I had been including them in additional posts as I received enough to make another collage.
Still that didn't seem to be enough. I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.
There's more of course. We sometimes feature different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!
If you would like to be featured, or would like to see someone else featured, please send me a private FR mail.
Every Monday we will post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :) If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.
Thank you, and please have fun with us...every day! ~ Billie

"I Will Be Good"
Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? 1 Samuel 15:19
|
When Queen Victoria was a child, she didn't realize that she was in line for the throne of England. Her instructors, trying to prepare her for the future, were frustrated because they couldn't motivate her. She just didn't take her studies seriously. Finally, her teachers decided to tell her that one day she would become the queen of England. Upon hearing this, Victoria quietly said, "Then I will be good." The realization that she had inherited this high calling gave her a sense of responsibility that profoundly affected her conduct from that day forward.
Our Scripture reading for today tells how Saul had been chosen from among the people of Israel as their anointed king (1 Samuel 15:17). Almighty God had honored him greatly in giving him this position as leader of His special nation. But Saul didn't think about the kind of attitude that should accompany his high calling. If he had, he would not have pounced on the loot of battle as if he were the leader of an outlaw band (v.19). As believers, we are children of God and joint-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:16-17). We have a noble calling. Let's always keep in mind who we are. This will help us to say, as young Victoria said, "I will be good." Herb Vander Lugt
O Lord, you see what's in my heart, There's nothing hid from You; So help me live the kind of life That's honest, good, and true. D. De Haan

I just updated my website, getting ready to kick things into high gear.
http://www.rusthompson.com/
I saw the temp down there, whew!
I lived in Tucson and it averaged 110 in the summer.
Once felt it 126 in Laughlin Nevada. Humid there too like Texas.
Colorado River runs right thru it, waters cold, it comes out of the bottom of the dam.

Well, let's put it this way. It is nearly 11pm and it is still 88* here. I am in the desert part of West Texas, so humidity is NOT a problem! It is 27% right now, and folks would say that is high! LOL!
Thanks for the link--I'll go check it out. Keep 'em hoppin', Rus! You're doing a good work by making them honest!

For Our Troops
As our young men and women
march off to fight a war.
Defending all our rights
upon another's shore.
I pray for their safe keeping
and that they all return.
Lets give them the honor
that they so rightly earn.
And for those who gave it all
may your spirits persevere.
As we bow our heads in silence
and our eyes give off a tear.
I thank you from my heart
for my country and my rights.
May God bless you all
and raise to new heights.

Iraq war hits home yet again
New Hanover High alum John Mac Smith killed
When two Army officers knocked on the door of Judy Smiths Borden Avenue house Thursday morning, she knew it was bad news.
The Fort Bragg officers had come to tell her that her son, 22-year-old John Mac Smith, a sergeant with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, was killed in Iraq Wednesday when a roadside bomb hit his convoy.
We were told from the beginning theyll send somebody, two officers will come, one is a chaplain, said Mrs. Smith, whose eyes were red from crying. I knew immediately that something had happened, and they said Mrs. Smith, do you want to sit down?
They told me what had happened as much as they could, she added. They stayed with me until Glenn could get home, then they said a prayer with us.
Sgt. Smith left for al-Iskandariyah, about 25 miles south of Baghdad, with the 11th ACR from Fort Irwin, Calif., in January. This was his second tour in Iraq. He was helping to train the Iraqi national guard.
He was in the Army JROTC program at New Hanover High School and enlisted before he graduated in 2000, his father, Glenn Smith, said.
He wore camouflage stuff since he was this big, Mr. Smith said lowering one hand to knee height and wiping off a tear with the other.
He went to Fort Bragg for a summer camp and he was hooked, Mr. Smith said.
Lt. Col. James Chaffins of the New Hanover High School Army JROTC program, remembered that camp and Mac well.
Im sad, but very proud that he served his country, Lt. Col. Chaffins said. He served us all proudly.
Lt. Col. Chaffins said Sgt. Smith was the drill team commander his senior year and would remember him as one of his most dedicated and motivated cadets.
He was just a good kid, a great guy and well miss him, Lt. Col. Chaffins said.
He was on his road to become a career military man, Mrs. Smith said.
Before he was transferred to the 11th ACR, Sgt. Smith served in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg for four years. During that time he spent a year in Iraq.
He said it was better this time, Mrs. Smith said. He said he had more access to phones and e-mail and everything.
So the Smiths had gotten accustomed to hearing from their son on a weekly basis.
It was mostly everyday chit-chat, Mrs. Smith said. Every time he had to go out of the compound, he called it the office, hed say Ive gotta go to the office.»
Mrs. Smith laughed at the memory, but became serious again.
The last time I talked to him was Mothers Day, she said. Well, it was Sunday there, so he really called on Saturday.
Sgt. Smith would ask his mom for things he missed and she would get it and mail it to him every Saturday.
His most recent request was Spam, Vienna sausages, potted ham, crackers and chili in a can, Mrs. Smith said. Dont ask my why, but thats what he wanted, she said and fell silent.
Sgt. Smith will never get the care package.
On Thursday afternoon family and friends gathered at the Smiths baby blue cottage-style house on Borden Avenue to support and seek comfort in one another and to mourn.
The little house where Sgt. Smith lived all his life before joining the Army, was a telltale of parents love. The walls were filled with the three Smith childrens photos, drawings and newspaper clippings.
In the kitchen, for example, hung a little handprint in blue paint, under which read, Mac 1988. In the den, photos of and taken by Sgt. Smith decorated walls and bookshelves.
It was an emotional older sister, Jill, who pulled out her brothers dog tags that she wore under her shirt.
When he left the first time, I said Will you give me a pair of your dog tags before you go? Jill Smith said fighting back tears. I wear them for good luck. I took them off when he came home and I put them back on when he left this time.
Now I will wear them forever.

Love the fact we continue to have Military Monday dedicated to our heroes, acknowledging the tremendous debt we owe them for acting for America and the principles upon which it was founded.
A special thank you is accorded you, Rus, for your patriotism, your service, devotion to this thread, ministry with the Daily Bread offerings, example as a husband and father and friend, and your putting action where your words are, active in politics in a depressed area -- a tough row to hoe, but you are not deterred!!
To all the other hostesses and hosts and contributors, we greatly appreciate your efforts to keep America and this site the truly Finest --
How wonderful it is to have this man
