Ray Lewis Wants A New Deal
jimrome.com ^ | 14 June 2005 | Jim Rome

Speculation is Baltimore Ravens Linebacker Ray Lewis may want a new contract and that he could be looking for a $50 million dollar signing bonus.

Look, Lewis is a great player, a great leader, a great personality and I like that pre-game dance as much as anybody, but $50 million to sign?

Is Ray Lewis a Middle Linebacker or did he find a cure for cancer? If they were to ever give Ray Ray $50 mill up front, what sort of effect would that have on the cap? Will Kyle Boller and Jamal Lewis play for free? I want to be there when Ozzie Newsome tells the fellas, 'Hey guys we gave your entire jack to Ray, you guys are cool playing for free right?'

Look, I never begrudge what these guys make. If the check doesn’t float then they’re worth it. And if I could do what they can do, I'd ask for it also, but I wouldn’t ask for $50 million up front.

Rome sucks, he is the Geraldo Rivera of sports commentators and a sissy too.

Ray Lewis will get his contract renewed just like everyone else on the Ravens team, one year before expiration of the contract and in line with salaries of that position and skill. Ray isn't going anywhere, period.

Sorry, he is not worth that much of an advance, nobody is. Let him earn it, the 'old fashioned' way.

What is the old fashioned way in your opinion?

He should be behind bars rather than playing linebacker.

Will the new contract have a murder clause? < /sarcasm>

Ray Lewis is a good player, but he's also a product of media hype. He's been exposed in big games by good coaches and teams.

He is clearly on the downside of his career, he is no longer the best linebacker in the league, and isn't even the best defensive player on his team any more. He's on crack if he thinks he can renegotiate his contract for a $50 million bonus. Well, he probably is on crack if he is hanging out with the rest of that team on a regular basis.

Honestly, this is his last chance to get any money. He's getting too old. Hurray for Ray. Money you don't ask for is money you don't get.

I thought he wanted another SB ring. If the Ravens give him that kind of money he can forget playing for another title.

I agree. Ray Lewis is a murderer and should be tossed out of te NFL not paid big bucks.

The Ravens would be stupid to pay Lewis at the expense of Reed.

Obviously, Lewis believes that, just because ESPN and ABC show him do his pre-game dance, he's a great player. I saw him play against the Patriots last year and calling him a non-factor would be kind. Yet, ESPN had him miked up and dancing. Pathetic!

Ray Lewis is one hell of a football player criminal, but he is not worth a $50 million signing bonus.

Bingo! The only reason a team should consent to renegotiating a player's salary is to lock-up a young, IMPROVING player -- not one who has already peaked. The one exception might be the quarterback position. Many QB's can be quite productive long after they lose that youthful zip on the ball.

Well, to be fair, the Patriots have a way of doing that to a lot of the league's top players (make them a non-factor).

Given how frequently players try to reneg on their contracts, I am surprised that teams haven't just started negotiating performance-based contracts in order to avoid this issue. I suppose the reason why is that the players don't want to be judged on performance, particularly when they know they can always whine and get out of their contracts if they want a better one.

My favorite time watching Ray Ray play was against my Chiefs last year on MNF.

They miked him up, expecting to hear him dominate with some mighty hits.

Instead, all we heard was Ray Ray crying "It's not possible! It's not possible!"

Watch Ray Ray being bulldozed by Brian Waters.
Watch Ray Ray being annihilated by Will Shields as Priest Holmes steps into the end zone.
Watch Ray Ray being obliterated by Tony Richardson as Priest Holmes dances by for a big gain.

Ray Ray spent the game on his butt. Crying into the mike.

I'm a big Rome guy. I even subscribe to his website to get the streaming audio (we don't get him here).

He'll be the A-Rod of football.

He's already gotten the Super Bowl MVP, and he stabbed somebody in the offseason preceding that Super Bowl. Why not.

I'll take my Tedi Bruschi any day. R. Lewis is a punk, and I wouldn't want him on my TEAM for $50, let alone $50 mil. That being said, the Ravens should pay him, so he can screw up the team for the next decade.
