Police Say Jailed Child Molester May Have Thousands of Victims

By Rachel Konrad Associated Press Writer
Published: Jun 16, 2005 SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - A convicted child molester jailed in California may have committed sex crimes against thousands of victims, police said Thursday after finding computers, notebooks and meticulous, handwritten lists of boys' names and apparent codes for various sex acts.

San Jose Police Lt. Scott Cornfield described 63-year-old Dean Arthur Schwartzmiller as "one of the most active child molesters we've ever seen."

During a search of his bedroom in San Jose, police discovered binders full of child porn and numerous logs with lists of more than 36,000 children's names - mostly boys - and codes that appear to indicate how he abused them.

"If one-tenth of these numbers are accurate, we're looking at hundreds of victims in a number of states. The reason we want to tell the world about this is because we believe he's been involved in child molestations in a number of countries," Cornfield said.

Schwartzmiller was being held without bail on one count of aggravated sexual assault on a child and six counts of lewd and lascivious conduct on a child, with each count alleging multiple victims. He was arrested in Washington state late last month and sent to San Jose on June 7.

A message left for his public defender was not immediately returned Thursday.

Authorities said Schwartzmiller apparently gained the trust of victims and parents by working as a home renovation contractor. San Jose police got involved after he allegedly befriended at least two boys in the city with gifts, invited them to his house for video games and movies, and molested them.

Schwartzmiller apparently did not register as a sex offender, so his history did not appear in the "Megan's Law" databases in California or other states, authorities said.

"It's as shocking to me as to you," said Sgt. Tom Sims, a supervisor with the department's child exploitation division. "I've never seen anything like this."

Although police said Schwartzmiller appears to have spent much of the past 30 years in California, he has been arrested on child molestation charges in New York, Arkansas and Washington. He also served prison time in Idaho for child molestation in the late 1970s, and is wanted in Oregon on sexual assault charges involving a minor.

In the 1980s, he lived in Brazil, and was extradited from there to Idaho again in the later part of the decade to serve more time, Cornfield said. Police believe he may have victims in Brazil and Mexico.

Authorities also arrested Schwartzmiller's roommate, another convicted child molester wanted for violating parole in Oregon. Fred Everts was charged with child molestation in San Jose.

In a separate case, Edilberto Datan, a 61-year-old San Diego man who has admitted to traveling to his native Philippines and having sex with eight underage boys, was sentenced Thursday to 17 years in federal prison and lifetime supervision.

The retired auditor for the California Department of Real Estate was arrested in 2004 at the airport in Los Angeles upon his return from the Philippines. Authorities said they found about 150 sexually explicit images of 18 teenage boys in his luggage and digital camera. Eight of the children were identified and located.

Cornfield said the multicolored spiral notebooks contain more than 36,000 entries, most of them for boys who may have been as young as 8, but some of those names appear repeatedly.

"We know that according to these records, some of these children have been molested multiple times," Cornfield said. "If any of these numbers are even close to accurate, then it is one of the most significant child molestation finds that we have ever encountered."

"If one-tenth of these numbers are accurate, we're looking at hundreds of victims in a number of states. The reason we want to tell the world about this is because we believe he's been involved in child molestations in a number of countries," said Cornfield.

Police also seized binders containing pornographic photographs of children, several computers and a 6-foot-tall server, which is being analyzed by a forensic lab in Menlo Park.

Police suspect the machines will contain images of child pornography, and possibly databases of victims.  Investigators are trying to determine whether Schwartzmiller was operating a Web site or using computers to lure victims.

While investigators said they hadn't confirmed that the coded entries — which included the letters "F" and "X" after some names — are sexual acts, some page headings, written in a loopy cursive, categorize boys according to graphically specific sex acts.

Headings include, "Boys under 12," "Blond Boys," "Cute Boys," "Boys who say no," and boys by specific sex act, Cornfield said.

"I've never seen anything like this," Sgt. Tom Sims, who supervises the child exploitation unit.

Police in Washington arrested Schwartzmiller on May 23 after he fled there from San Jose just one day after the parents of a 12-year-old San Jose boy told police they believed Schwartzmiller had molested their son. As the investigation unfolded, detectives found another San Jose boy who reportedly was victimized.

Schwartzmiller remained jailed without bail in San Jose and so far faces seven felony charges, including aggravated sexual assault and lewd acts on a child, for abusing two boys he allegedly lured to his Vineyard Street home with offers of gifts and invitations to watch movies and play video games, authorities

If convicted on all counts and enhanced penalties for multiple victims, Schwartzmiller faces up to 105 years in prison, said Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Steve Fein.

San Jose Police also have arrested Schwartzmiller's roommate, Fred Everts, 34, on charges that he also molested one of the two San Jose boys.

Schwartzmiller and Everts also face child sexual assault charges in Oregon. Although Schwartzmiller appears to have spent much of the past three decades in California, he has a long history of preying on boys, including arrests for child molestation in Oregon, Idaho, New York, California, Arkansas and Washington, police said.

Police believe Schwartzmiller, who apparently earned the trust of alleged victims and parents by working as a home renovation contractor, used several aliases — including Dean Miller and Dean Harmon — during the past five years to avoid revealing that he was a convicted sex offender.

Investigators also said it appears that he didn't register as required, so that his history as a sex offender did not appear in the "Megan's Law" databases in California or other states, they said.

I hope they can use this to catch more criminal deviants.

Doesn't say that each name has a note.

Most child molesters profile. They put themselves in a position to be around children. Then they look for the kid with problems.

It wouldn't be surprising if he wrote the names of all the kids living in a household where he was working temporarily.

He would be able to observe and single out the vulnerable.

He could have all the names but only molested and coded selective targets.

Why should child molesters be punished at all. Have not the liberals taught us a more enlightened view?

First, Kinsey showed us that sex, all manner and kinds, is normal.

Second, Hollywood has shown us that sex is more than normal, it is a positive good, indeed, it is often portrayed as a truer path to redemption than Christian salvation.

Third, Bill Clinton has demonstrated that there should be no consequences for sex.

Fourth, concern for harm to the child has been shown to be utterly misplaced by Planned Parenthood and other abortionists who truly have the welfare of children as their first concern.

Just as soon as The New York Times finishes shaping cultural attitudes toward homosexuality, I am sure they will start a new crusade on behalf of the victims of prejudice against child love.

I wonder if the same reporters and editors care that one of the left's idols, Dr. Kinsey, used men like this as his research subjects, and thanked them for their work.

I don't doubt this guy should be locked up and the key thrown away ... or worse, especially with the evidence the police have and the fact that this scum is wanted internationally.

However, just taking the raw numbers ... 50 yrs, 36,000 kids. That's about 2 kids per day (I believe the calculator gave me 1.972). Good Lord!

Oh hell, I was going to say more, but I can't ... this is just sickening.

Unlike Whacko Jacko, this loser doesn't have 10 million in his bank account to buy an acquittal. Therefore (even though he lives in the socialist state of Kalifornia) he will probably wind up in jail for the rest of his life

[ 36,000? Shouldn't that be a red flag for sorts? At 365 kids a year, it would take him over 98 years to molest 36,000 kids. ]

He had a "list" of 36,000 names.. he didn't molest 36,000.. acording to the article..
I have a sense hes the tip of an iceberg.. in THIS country..
In other countrys its almost LEGAL... especially muslim countrys.. and africa..
