Human embryonic stem cells have the potential to develop into eggs and sperm in the laboratory
European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology ^ | June 19, 2005 | Emma Mason

Copenhagen, Denmark: Scientists in the UK have proved that human embryonic stem cells can develop in the laboratory into the early forms of cells that eventually become eggs or sperm.

Their work opens up the possibility that eggs and sperm could be grown from stem cells and used for assisted reproduction, therapeutic cloning and the creation of more stem cells for further research and for the improved treatments for patients suffering from a range of diseases.

Behrouz Aflatoonian will tell the 21st annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology today (Monday 20 June) that the research also solves the practical and ethical problems associated with obtaining human samples of primordial germ cells (PGCs), which are the ancestral cells that eventually form eggs and sperm (gametes).

"Investigating the mechanisms of human primordial germ cell and gamete development is important for understanding the causes of infertility and the potential harmful effects of environmental chemicals on reproductive development," he will say.

"But at present it is very difficult to obtain human samples of these cells as they only occur early in development."

"eggs and sperm could be grown from stem cells"

So then harvesting from a donor is no needed. Waiting for the artificial womb...

I don't need embryonic stem cells to make sperm.

So all we have to do is grow a baby, then vivisect it into cells, then we will be able to use the cells to make haploid sex cells which can recombinate to make new babies?

This is amazingly backwards.

It just seems like they're making it way more difficult than it needs to be.

All the more reason to declare in law that human life starts at conception - regardless of method of conception.

That alone will put a stop to this sort of nonsense, because those two zygotes in the test-tube, when combined, would obligate the company doing the "research" to start funding college educations, prividing homes, and parenting and all the other things moms and pops do for each person they thereby create.

Its not that important where a person comes from, as long as it has all the rights of a person from conception.

The slippery slope has come home to roost in a way plain enough for everty one to see.

Oh for Pete's sakes! There are quite enough evil people in the world without you scareing yourself with make-believe villains.

I reiterate: What's your point?

The fact that all people in the world are not bound by US laws is no excuse for the US to be bound by THIER rules.

True. We can go extinct with the knowledge that at least we didn't try to compete.
