Fred Phelps the Viper: Clues to What's Driving Him-- Al Gore? [God-hates-faXs ping]
Several Sources Linked | July 1, 2005 | Arthur Wildfire! March

Free Republic Exclusive

Fred Phelps, leader of the "God-hates-faXs" movement, is planning on crashing the funeral of one of our War Dead on July 4th. Why? To spread his message of anti-homosexual SPAM in the most inappropriate way imaginable. There's a time and a place for everything. He's a publicity whore, as far as I'm concerned.

Here are snips from an earlier FR Report:

"A SF SGT E-5, James Stewart, will be buried in St. Petersburg, Florida on July 4, 2005. It's wholly appropriate that he be buried on our nation's birthday, because Sergeant Stewart gave his life for our country.... and all of us. He was killed in Iraq by a roadside bomb, call an IED in MilSpeak. IED is short for "Improvised Explosive Device." [snip]

"A Topeka, Kansas freak has announced plans to disrupt the burial with chants, bull horns and signs that read, "Thank God for IEDs" "God Hates America," "This Soldier Is In Hell," and "God Wanted This Soldier Dead." " [snip]

[posted by Mindbender26-- link posted at bottom of next post.]

It's my belief that whether that "Topeka, Kansas freak" shows up there or not, it's a good time we try to uncover just what that "freak", Fred Phelps, is about.

And while the clock is ticking, the anti-Christians are gloating, trying to compare Phelps with all Christian Conservatives. Fred Phelps is like a custom-made punching bag for the Left. And guess what? Maybe he is. Can you spell, "Al Gore?"

Fred Phelps went even further than I go [saying a lot, I have to tell you] , even further than Repent America goes, in calling sodomites to task, using our War Dead as props! He's stabbed our fighting forces in the back time-after-time. And I've been digging today to figure out why.

Here's what I've uncovered so far [and if you have sourcing that can confirm or deny, please contribute.]

1. Phelps was reportely a propaganda operative for Saddam Hussein.

2. He was reportedly a propaganda operative for Fidel Castro.

3. Fred Phelps was reportedly very tight with Al Gore, along with photographic evidence.

4. He was reportedly a narcotics abuser.

5. It's widely reported that Phelps was a shady lawyer, and several others his family have been practicing lawyers.

Let's take this step-by-step:

1. Fred Phelps was reportedly a propaganda operative for Saddam Insane.

What bothers me is there's nothing about this on the CNN website [at least in google]. I would have thought that CNN, being on such good terms with Saddam, would have plastered their website with this. But I hadn't found anything about Phelps there yet. So please bear that in mind.

Wikipedia seems to be a root source of this report:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rev._Fred_Phelps#Affiliations_with_Saddam_Hussein_and_Fidel_Castro

"...In 1997, before the fall of Saddam Hussein during the second Gulf War, Phelps wrote him a letter praising his regime, and received special permission from the Iraqi government to send a group of his children to Baghdad to protest against the American government..." [snip]

Phelps had his church followers [children] stand in the streets of Baghdad with all kinds of hate-America signs.
Wikipedia adds:

"...Phelps mourned the fall of Hussein's regime and has consistently criticized the invasion of Iraq, citing, "IRAQ=USA=SODOM" and keeping a toll on his webpage celebrating the death of every American soldier killed and pronouncing loyalty to Iraq..." [snip]

Now I have to ask, if this report is true, just why is Phelps celebrating the deaths of our soldiers? Because he hates sodomites? Or because he supports Saddam Insane?
Another website, biologydaily.com, is almost word-for-word, with the same report as Wikipedia:

http://www.biologydaily.com/biology/Fred_Phelps#Affiliations_with_Saddam_Hussein_and_Fidel_Castro

2. He was reportedly a propaganda operative for Fidel Castro.
In both the above links, wikipedia and biologydaily, Phelps had been working with Fidel Castro, at least some that's reported. They quote Harper's Magazine in 1998.

3. Very Tight With Al Gore
This has been more widely reported than the ties with Castro and Saddam. For how long? As late as 1997, the same year he reportedly reached out to Baghdad!

http://www.lcrga.com/archive/200010251159.shtml
Mind you: this is a Georgia Log Cabin Republicans web page, but they claim these are authentic photos of Gore and Tipper with the Phelps family.

Gore Political Ties to "God Hates Fags" Founders Uncovered

Gore and Wife Tipper Headlined Fund raiser at Phelps' Topeka Home; Phelps Family Reportedly Invited to Clinton-Gore Inaugurations in 93 and 97 [snip]

[Web site has photos claiming it's the Gore family with the Phelps family]

Wikipedia confirms
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rev._Fred_Phelps

CNS confirms:
http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewPolitics.asp?Page=\Politics\archive\200010\POL20001016c.html

"...The people of this church were powerfully persuaded that, because of him talking to us - I'm talking about eyeball to eyeball - that he was opposed to the homosexual, so-called gay rights agenda," said Fred W. Phelps, pastor of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, where he runs the anti-homosexuality web site as part of the church’s ministry..." [snip]

CNS adds this:
"...The 70-year-old pastor also claimed to have made arrangements for Gore’s campaign staff in Kansas to live with parishioners during the campaign, and Phelps’ son provided office space for the campaign and hosted a fundraising event for Gore following his failed bid for his party’s presidential nomination..."

4. Narcotics abuser?
http://www.rslevinson.com/gaylesissues/features/collect/phelps/bl_phelpschapter04.htm

[Note this has a very pro-homosexual slant]

"...Fred Phelps became heavily dependent on amphetamines and barbituates while in law school. Every week for 6 years, from 1962-1967, their mother would give Mark a 20 dollar bill and ask him to go down and pick up his father's 'allergy medicine'..." [snip]

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/michael_haggerty/expose3.htm

[note this page has a strong disclaimer]

"But the beast already so poorly penned within Fred now came out. Under the conflicting tug of speed that wouldn't wear off and the Darvon he'd taken to sleep, the Pastor Phelps would often wake his family in the middle of the night while doing his imitation of a whirling dervish whose shoes were tied together: "With all the drugs, he had very little body control," remembers Mark, "so we weren't really scared of him then."

http://www.baptistwatch.org/content/expose3.html

[similar word-for-word account as the other two]
"...He also picked up bottles of little yellow pills that were to 'help daddy get to sleep'..."

http://www.topekadiy.com/xfsection+index.category+3+orderby+createdA+PHPSESSID+acd2cfc0cfa3005e1757116c1007e80a.htm

"...Finally, Fred's system could no longer withstand being wrenched up by reds in the morning and jerked down by barbituates at night. One day, he didn't wake up. Mark remembers seeing the long, gray ambulance in the driveway. His father had slipped into a coma from toxic drug abuse..."

http://www.topekadiy.com/edito+content.id+1.htm

This is in a letter Mark Phelps reportedly wrote last year to citizens of Topeka and northeast Kansas:

"...I also realize that my father is a very unstable person who is determined to hurt people. And because he is so bound to be hateful and hurtful, and because he's so untrustworthy, I believe it's a good idea to respond to him with caution much like the caution used when dealing with a rattlesnake or a mad dog. You see, the causes that he crusades for, including the Bible, are not the issue here. He simply wants to hate and to have a forum for his hate. If the causes he focuses on were the issue, that is, if they really meant something to him in his heart and he meant for the things he does to be for the good, his behavior would not be what it is..."

5. Shady Lawyer?

http://64.233.187.104/search?q=cache:QD5jeX4KZ8gJ:www.splcenter.org/intel/intelreport/article.jsp%3Fsid%3D184+%22fred+phelps%22+campaign+governor&hl=en&start=3

1964

Phelps earns a law degree from Washburn University in Topeka, but has trouble joining the state bar when no judges are willing to vouch for his "good character," the normal procedure under Kansas law. Phelps overcomes this obstacle by providing recommendations from others.
Before the end of his legal career in 1989, Phelps will file some 400 suits, mostly in federal court. Estranged son Nathan Phelps will claim later that part of his father's strategy is to file frivolous lawsuits in the hope that his targets will settle to avoid the costs of defense.

1990

Phelps, undertaking a run for governor of Kansas, begins disseminating flyers attacking his gubernatorial competitors and other state politicians in unusually personal terms. He loses the Democratic primary, but garners 11,634 votes, 6.7% of the total.

[a lot of other interesting stuff there, but moving along...]

You can get an earful about all manner of reports from these pages:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rev._Fred_Phelps#Criminal_record

1987: Witness intimidation, threats, and attempted extortion (charges were brought up by the Kansas Bar Association and used as evidence in Phelps' disbarment and the launching of disbarment hearings against his children) [snip]

http://www.rotten.com/library/bio/religion/fred-phelps/
1979 The Kansas Supreme Court disbars Fred Phelps, declaring in part that he had "little regard for the ethics of his profession."

1989 Fred Phelps surrenders his license to practice law in Federal court.
[snip out of rotten.com]

For more information than you would care to read, here are some other pages:

http://www.killcreek.com/devolution/addicted.html

That page starts off this way:
IN THE DISTRICT COURT OF SHAWNEE COUNTY, KANSAS
DIVISION 7
Case No. 94CV766
JON BELL, Plaintiff,
vs.
STAUFFER COMMUNICATIONS, INC., Defendant.

[snip]

http://www.biologydaily.com/biology/Fred_Phelps

Final Question: If it's true that Phelps was a friend of Al Gore, just what on earth attracted Gore to him? Was it Castro? Was it Saddam? Drugs? A shady lawyer? What? Why did Gore like this guy?

Only according to him. He is not recognised by any mainstream Baptist church. His group had a demonstration at a Baptist church here a year ago. His reason was that the coach of the women's basketball team for a major, local university worshipped there; his reasoning was that all female coaches are "that way." The guy is a moron.

No arguement there. But the man is just as much a Christian as he is a Democrat. I don't know anyone in that party that doesn't distance themselves from Phred and his Phlock. Every Democrat of my acquaintance is just as disgusted with him as every Republican I know is. Trying to hang Phelps on them is ridiculous.

I hear you. If Phelps were, in fact, a "plant" or operative, what would he do differently?

I mean the left is getting the best of both worlds: Not only is he demoralizing to our troops, he boosts our enemies, and he makes the Right look goofy. It's like a leftist's greatest fantasy.

I know it's Wikipedia, but check out this link for some more insight into his church cult.

WBC

Here's a few enlightening quotes from the article about this so-called man of God:

On December 29, 2004, shortly after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, Phelps's church published a flyer headlined "Thank God for Tsunami and 20,000 dead Swedes!!!", calling Sweden the "land of the sodomite damned" and saying "woe to faggot Sweden". More fliers were produced shortly after, welcoming reports of 5,000 Swedes (later reduced to 2,000) and 3,000 Americans killed in the tsunami. Another of the group's fliers expressed hope "that God will send a massive tsunami to totally devastate the North American continent". The group had also threatened to picket Swedish survivors at various locations on the island of Phuket.
Phelps responded gleefully to reports of orphaned children being kidnapped following the disaster, saying: "Better for them to be sold into lives of sex than to be taught that it's OK to be gay."

On April 9th, 2005, Phelps preached about convicted child molester and alleged murderer John Couey in his weekly sermon, using Couey as a counterpoint to gay and lesbian adoption:
"I'd sooner let John Couey, C-O-U-E-Y, who raped and buried alive little Jessica, I'd sooner let him adopt kids, than turn them over to the fags and dykes! That clear enough for ya?"

n 2000 a Jewish resident of Topeka named Lief Dolan e-mailed Phelps requesting that he stop picketing his synagogue. Phelps replied to Dolan: "Shut up you Christ hating Jew, I wish Hitler had finished the job. You and your children had better watch your back when you get out of temple. This is not a threat but a promise."

Yes, he'll say anything for publicity. And maybe some people would be more comfortable quoting from the Anti-Defamation League website:

http://www.adl.org/special_reports/wbc/default.asp

"...Trained as a lawyer, Fred Phelps was disbarred in 1979 by the Kansas Supreme Court, which asserted that he had "little regard for the ethics of his profession." The formal complaint against Phelps charged that he misrepresented the truth in a motion for a new trial in a case he had brought, and that he held the defendant in the case up to "unnecessary public ridicule for which there is no basis in fact."..." [snip]

Here is what the ADL had to quote of his 'church's anti-semitic statements:

http://www.adl.org/special_reports/wbc/wbc_on_jews.asp

"Homosexuals and Jews dominated Nazi Germany...just as they now dominate this doomed U.S.A....The Jews now wander the earth despised, smitten with moral and spiritual blindness by a divine judicial stroke...And god has smitten Jews with a certain unique madness, whereby they are an astonishment of heart, a proverb, and a byword (the butt of jokes and ridicule) among all peoples whither the Lord has driven and scattered them...Jews, thus perverted, out of all proportion to their numbers energize the militant sodomite agenda...The American Jews are the real Nazis (misusers and abusers of governmental power) who hate God and the rule of law." " [snip]

Now come on. This is past insane. This is contrived. He's a 'plant', I think [like others have been saying] -- hoping to make the Christian Right look more wacko than all the left combined. Is it really any surprise he might have teamed up with Al Gore?

You will find these ADL links show what appears to be a systematic effort to alianate the Christian Right from everyone:

http://www.adl.org/special_reports/wbc/wbc_on_blacks.asp

Here's what appears to be an effort to alianate the Christian Right from Americans of African descent:

" "Forget the American Bald Eagle. Since June 23, 1994, the only fitting emblem for the Great Seal of the United States Judiciary is this beast...Just call me: 'Yo Honuh'!!!... Here Come De Judge!!!"

--Text surrounding a racist caricature of an African-American female judge, "The Federal Judiciary: A Menagerie of Demonic, Libidinous, unclean Beasts: A Curse from God Upon an Apostate Nation," WBC flier, November 28, 1996"

There are crack heads who are more in touch with sanity than this freakazoid. He is an annoyance wherever he goes and he is a pustule on the bum of mankind.

"I hear you. If Phelps were, in fact, a "plant" or operative, what would he do differently?"

This is an excellent question. The main enemy of a Free America is the Hard Left. They began with the Soviet Communists. There has been some evolution in the Hard Left, especially the Long Term Strategy worked out in 1957-1960, as explained by Golitsyn, who was a ranking KGB officer at the time and observed the strategy being worked out, before he defected to the US in 1961.

We all know the Hard Left has proved unable to compete with the US in economic development or technology.

In many areas, however, the Hard Left excels, including deception, subversion, and terror. The operating principles of the Soviet Communists, explained so well in Anton Suvorov's books, Inside the GRU and Inside Spetsnaz, have become incorporated into the Hard Left over time, including terrorists.

I was born and raised a Liberal Democrat. Though I had a genetic predisposition to see things sensibly (ie, less like a Liberal than those around me), my political turning point came in the mid-1980s, when I became friends with a guy i worked with in Silicon Valley who grew up in the Soviet Union. A frequent line of his to me (in reference to politics) was, "Don't be naiive."

I was raised the same way. My mom was one of the Naders' Raiders, and she taught me to hug trees-- literally. But she loved to hear Governor Reagan on the radio. That led her out of it, eventually. But she still hates to see cut roses. "They're dead."

I remember in high school: my first brush with a liberal lie was a convoluted circle: facism was at the bottom and communism was at the top. Both right and left supposedly interested with both in a circle.

And the teacher, flaming leftist though he was, he was honest enough to admit that facism, while 'driven by the right', blended with socialism. I asked, "Then why is it a circle? If facism is socialism, it's on the left too, right?" "No," he said, "it's driven by the right." That later re-surfaced from forgotten things when someone brought up the fact here on the FR that Nazis are left wing.

The second encounter with a left wing lie was hearing the head honcho of education talk about how we should passively resist war, like Ghandi. I was fortunate enough to have had experiences with bullies. [They're trying to take that off the ciriculum in schools now, I hear.] Keeping bullies in mind, I realized that you can't resist passively in totalitarian regimes-- only in a free country.

My third encounter was the Congressional Bank scandal. At the time, I concluded that both parties were hopelessly corrupt [note that that Bush's father saying "Read my lips"].

And then came the information age. I got in it early, listening to Weyrich on NET. For some reason, I needed to see it on TV at first, not trusting radio yet. When I heard about partial birth abortion, that was the last straw.

Then I entered the FR prior to registration. What a time that was. Foul mouth leftists were all over the place, trying to disrupt it. I was having fun. But a lot of people were run off.

Still awake? Hehehe!

Phelps' law career checkered

By Joe Taschler and Steve Fry
The Capital-Journal

"...The law career of Fred W. Phelps Sr. ended Feb. 3, 1989, when he surrendered his license to practice law in federal court.

"Phelps gave up his license after he and five of his grandchildren and a daughter-in-law -- all lawyers -- surfaced as defendants in a disciplinary complaint filed Dec. 16, 1985, by nine active and senior U.S. District Court judges in Kansas. The federal judges charged the seven Phelpses had made false accusations against them.

"The five children were Fred W. Phelps Jr., Margie Jean Phelps, Shirley Lynn Phelps-Roper, Jonathan Baxter Phelps and Elizabeth Marie Phelps. Betty Joan Phelps, wife of Fred Phelps Jr., was the seventh defendant. According to court records, the seven had: ... " [snip]
