Nothing like planning 7 years ahead. :)

Oh, I think this will make for a "most excellent" bash! Don't you?

You see there's the rub. I can drink beer until I fall over and you'll note that doesn't entail covering everyone within 8 feet of me with beer. Smoking, does cover everyone within 8 feet of you with smoke, smoke which is hard to wash out of clothes. People come to drink and have fun not to go home smelling like an ashtray just because some junkie needs his nicotine fix. You're free to walk out the door and light up outside.

I have been hearing that Sebastian Coe had a great final presentation.

BTW, does it look like the fellow who won all the GOLD in rowing going to come out of retirement for the Olympics?

Hey, N.Y., look at the bright side
(Why do cities want to host a competition where out-of-control costs are the rule?)

No break in history today. Once again Great Britain trounces France!

You mean Stephen Redgrave? I doubt he'll come out of retirement to compete, but he'll certainly help with the organisation.

I read in the paper this morning that Finland was one of the critical swing votes in the election for host of the 2012 games. This Olympic vote took place after Chirac's pathetic comments on English cuisine saying only Finland has worse food in all of Europe. I wonder who the Fins voted for?

If Red Ken can be bound and gagged and left in a basement somewhere, we'll be all right.

Gee, why would you need to do that when you've got that perfectly good Tower standing smack dab in the middle of Londontown - seems as good as any a place to lock up the nutjob for the duration, dontchathink? And there is considerable historical precedent for stashing him there til the guests leave. Besides, I thought that basements were scarce as hen's teeth in Britain.

I see the tabloids coined a new nickname for him, Jacques Ass.

Regardless of my disdain for many aspects of modern day France, my heart goes out to the approximately 20% of the population that supports the US and Britain in our war on terror.

I met a couple from France in NYC a few months ago and they openly expressed support for what the US, Britain and the rest of our allies are trying to accomplish in Iraq. We spoke briefly of the upcoming decision on the 2012 Olympics and they were very hopeful that Paris would be awarded the games. They must feel terrible now.

As for the rest of France they must REALLY feel bad now that London has been awarded the games. NYC would have been bad enough. But London????? Oui!!!!!

OK you guys. Take it outside. I don't know what's worse. Stinking of cigarette smoke, or the stink of self-righteousness.

Paris has superb transportation infrastructure to bring the huge number of people expected at the Olympics (two major airports plus excellent high-speed rail connections to the rest of Europe).
Yes, their public transportation is really great... on the rare occasion that it's not on strike! When I was in France in March, there was a big strike in Paris on the very day that the olympic delegation was visiting. Bravo.

"I read in the paper this morning that Finland was one of the critical swing votes in the election for host of the 2012 games."

Oh, I so hope this is true. The French people, when they get wind of this, will turn on Chirac bigtime, because he opened his big mouth. He will be eating crow, which is much worse than either British or Finnish cuisine. Crow seems to be France's new national dish. They dished it out and now they have to eat it. C'est dommage.

Well you can always walk away from the stink of self righteousness without then needing to wash everything you're wearing 3 times to get rid of the stink. FWIW however, should anyone in the olympics need to smoke that bad anyway?
