Blog Readers Up 45% in Q1 (Free Republic #1)
Red Herring ^ | Monday, August 8, 2005

Posted on 08/08/2005 4:13:34 PM PDT by kristinn

U.S. blog readership in the first quarter jumped 45 percent to 49.5 million people, or one-sixth of the total U.S. population, a report said Monday, suggesting the blogosphere is becoming increasingly alluring to online advertisers.

The increase means 30 percent of U.S. Internet users visited blog sites in the quarter, according to the comScore Media Metrix report.

In the quarter, Google’s Blogspot had 19 million unique visitors, which comScore noted was more than big mainstream media sites NYTimes.com, USAToday.com, and WashingtonPost.com. However, these visitors were spread around Blogspot’s millions of individual sites.

As far as advertisers are concerned, blog readers are a desirable demographic—young, wealthy, likely to shop online, and with high-speed Internet connections. They visit 77 percent more web pages than the average Internet user.

The most popular blogs were Free Republic with 3.6 million visitors, Drudge Report with 2.3 million, Fleshbot (a Gawker Media blog) with 1.2 million, followed by Gawker and Fark, both with 1.1 million. Regularly updated blogs won a huge portion of the overall visits. Drudge Report alone had 44.3 million visits.

Most popular were political blogs followed by “hipster” lifestyle blogs, tech blogs, and blogs written by women, comScore noted.

However, blog readership tails off rather quickly, with the majority of blogs having under 100 visitors a day, according to Rick Bruner, director of research for DoubleClick, who co-authored the comScore report.

The comScore data does not address these smaller blogs as many are merged with all the other blogs hosted by the same domain, as in the case of Six Apart’s TypePad. Others simply did not make the cut, as the list was limited to the Top 400 most-trafficked blog domains. All but one of the blog domains used in the report had more than 1,000 unique visitors.

  Down the Food Chain
In Mr. Bruner’s opinion, the high price of advertising on top sites will lead companies to “start looking deeper down the food chain for more affordable advertising.” He estimated that about half of total page views on the Internet are to small sites.

Last week, Technorati announced that it had measured 14.2 million blogs, 55 percent of them active, about double the amount in March. The company counted 900,000 new posts per day in July, nearly double the amount in January (see Blogs: 900,000 Posts a Day).

Mr. Bruner said that the Technorati numbers give credence to comScore’s report. But, he said, “They’re not really comparable. Technorati can spider links, but they can’t actually look at traffic.”

An international report that combines blog creation with blog readerships of all sizes has yet to be completed.

The comScore report was sponsored by Six Apart and blog network Gawker Media.

Just amazing what the Robinson's have built with a little help from their friends.

By the way,and other SoCal Freepers listen to the John and Ken Show today and the very intense conversation regarding the postponement of the Tracreda Town house meeting in Carlsbad Thursday because of the threats of political opposition from the illegals and the School Superintend revoking his permission, given earlier to hold the meeting. Lawsuits are being filed///// Laws on the books from the days of the KKK are being invoked....

Unique Visitors in January:

FR 3,633,000
Drudge 2,266,000

Total # of Visits in January:

Drudge 44,279,000
FR 5,848,000

I'd love to see the relative Page Views per Visit and Avg. Minutes per Visit. This would be even more revealing. Drudge is generally a quick hit and run. More people "hang out" and puruse FR.

Thanks for the ping Mo1.

Aside from from talk radio, maybe Powerline or National Review, couple of others, the only other place I go for news is here because I know practically everything the MSM/DNC puts out of any importance will be found here. And, this is the first place I visit for that very reason.

There is no mistake the MSM/DNC are threatened by this board, and for good reason. The American people are a force when they come together, and that is what is done through this board.

Though, maybe we need to give the MSM a break (or not). They only learned "Blogs" existed last year. In another five years I'm sure they'll realize we have these newfound inventions called Forums (messageboards).

I'm not sure they'll ever realize what Drudge is. Would hit too close to home if they opened their eyes to the best description befitting his board.

Congratulations Mr. Robinson!

Impressive. FR is changing America.

It did that at 8:59 pm PDT on September 8, 2004 when one Buckhead publicly noted a lot of strange things about the supposed Texas Air National Guard memos CBS posted online as part of their 60 Minutes II report. That posting prompted people who read Free Republic on a regular basis to analyze the memos and within 12 hours proved they were never authentic to start with.

That event effectively finished off the credibility of the mainstream media and did a LOT to ensure Senator Kerry's defeat last November.

When my family walks by and I am reading Free Republic, they say, "Mom's blogging again." I correct them each time, but they keep saying it.

I am a former Newsweek, Times and two daily newspaper subscriber. Found Free Republic through the Swiftvets. I only wish I would have "known" about you all sooner. I don't feel so isolated in New Jersey because I have community with my mostly smart, thoughtful, patriotic, military supporting Freeper Friends.

Thank you Jim. Thank you FReepers. This is indeed a great community message board. Paul Revere rides again.

FR is where you meet smart, well educated people who think for themselves.

A year or two ago, because my opinions differed so drastically from the elitists of the Mainstream Newsmedia, Academia, and Hollywood, I became convinced that either they were morons or I was one. I was worried about myself.

So I had my IQ tested, several times, by several competent PhD clinical psychologists under carefully controlled circumstances.

Okay. I know this is of highly questionable meaningfulness.

Anyway is came out consistently about 170. Not exactly Einstein, but enough to conclude that I'm not the one who's the moron.

Of course, this is not the only reason that I came to this conclusion.

FR's held my interest for more than 7 years now--since July 24, 1998.

Maybe it's because you guys are smarter than I am. My wife is.

I've always liked to surround myself with people who are smarter than I am. It's like having a telescope or a microscope. You can see and comprehend things that would otherwise escape you.

That's one of the main reasons it's so hard to give serious attention to the Left. Leftists tend to be morons, and thus mind-numbingly boring, deadeningly imitative, and arrogantly unaware of their enormous shortcomings; or else sociopaths, who are unreliable and to be avoided for different (and obvious) reasons.

Anyway, rant on, my fellow FReeprs! At your best--your most candid--your most arrogant--your most irritating--your most ill-considered--your most hare brained--and your worst--there's an underlying and overriding wisdom and intelligence, and you tower over the morons of the Left.

FREEP ON!
