I'd say Carter because he originated the paper tiger image of the US with his inept, cowardly handling of the Iranian hostage situation. He also helped put the current Iranian fascists in place.

[Carter's legacy also includes: double digit inflation, alternating gas days, sky high real estate market, etc.]

Clinton follows Carter's illustrious legacy of cowardice in the face of terrorism with the addition of selling out the country to the Chinese.

Otherwise it's a tossup.

Woodrow Wilson. You can thank him for the federal income tax, and, indirectly, for the U.N.

Carter. Worst president in United States history. By a mile-long gas line.

Clinton's sexcapades were at least amusing and he signed Free Trade and Welfare Reform.

I'd have to say FDR or Lyndon Johnson. Both are borderline socialitst bustards.

Carter. The only president ever attacked by a giant swimming rabbit while fishing. Unfortunately the rabbit withdrew his attack.

Carter.

He was a bad President. Couldn't do anything right. Still can't. We're still recovering from the mess he made when he was President. I'm sorry I voted for him, but I give him credit for turning me to the GOP.

Clinton gets honorable mention.

Carter: 20+ misery index, decimated military, failed foreign policy.

Pierce: Did nothing at all including nothing about upcoming civil war.

No link.. this IS the poll - I just created it after thinking about the subject many, many times. I'll tally it up when things settle down. Should be interesting.

Buchannan, if only for his disgraceful behavior while riding around in Conestoga One.

LOL! It was the fault of those vixenish Wagon Hostesses, you know.

Let's not forget JFK whose weakness at the Bay of Pigs inspired the Soviets to almost wipe out civilization. People who give Kennedy credit for not blinking at the Cuban Missile Crisis seem not to realize that when he failed to provide the promised air support when the Bay of Pigs invasion got a bit rocky, he signalled the Russians that he was weak. We almost all died as a result.

See #65. The myth that "Hoover did nothing" seems to never die.

FDR

Others may have been even less competent, misguided, or immoral, but FDR takes the cake by a mile because of the monumental effect of his pushing our nation away from its founding ideals.

Manson may have been more evil that Hitler on an absolute scale, but Hitler is worse because of the magnitude of the ill effect he had.

From this historian's point of view, I'd have to say

1. LBJ

2. FDR
3. Carter
4. Clinton
5. Buchanan

Now if this was taked on Liberty Post, the final results will be:

1. George W. Bush

2. George W. Bush
3. George W. Bush
4. George W. Bush
5. George W. Bush

The canal never meant anything, in the case of a war, a ship sunk in that canal renders the whole thing useless.

Nothing but nothing takes the title from Clinton as the worst President ever.
#1 He gave China rocket technology and missile guidance technology so they can now nuke any city in the USA.
#2 He had Bin Laden after Laden declared war on the USA, yet let him go saying he had no cause to keep him.
#3 9-11 itself. Seems he had things in place which prevented the FBI from getting information about the whereabouts and activities of terrorists operating in the USA, including some of those that gave us 9-11.

He is the KING of worst Presidents. Who could ever hope to come close?

I would question his credentials as a "great general" as well, considering that his idea of strategy was "Overwhelm the Confederates with numbers, and damn the Union body count!" He was an effective general, but I would argue that being "effective" does not necessarily make one "great."

CLINTON...If he had been paying attention during the 90's instead of playing graba$$ with Monica, 9/11 may not have happened.

Waco happened on his watch, so did the first attack on the towers. 9/11 would have happened because he was busy playing "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil".

1) FDR. Good domestic president but the failure of his foreign policy left 300,000 Americans dead and Uncle Joe AKA stalin in charge of half of Europe. Due to God looking out for drunks and Uncle Sam we got the A-bomb in 1945, otherwise WW III would have swiftly followed WWII. In any event, we ended up with the Cold war for 50 years. Thanks FDR.

2) LBJ. Can't say one good word about him. As a person, domestically, and in foreign policy he was a disaster.

3) Nixon. I think he meant well, and the right people hated him . But he had character flaws that set the Republican party and conservatism 10 years.

4)Carter/Clinton - I would rate them higher, I mean lower, but lucky for us, outside events limited their ability to cause damage.
