I'm not posting the body of the thread as the number of vulgarities I'd have to omit would make it unreadable.
The article's funny, though.
Meet the F***ers.
And the guy who made the Fokker airplanes in WW1 was from Holland. I have come across the name F*ck in German history books.
Hauppl explained: "We had a vote last year on whether to rename the town, but decided to keep it as it is. After all, F**** has existed for 800 years (at least) probably when a Mr F*** or the F*** family moved into the area. The 'ing' was added as a word for settlement."
Ya know, I think that was the part that meant I just HAD to post it her on FR.

I believe BJCLinton runs the ping list now.
ever heard the George Carlin bit on the origin of the F word? the story says it comes from German...
It's Anglo-Saxon, by way of Middle English, though both Anglo-Saxon and Modern German share an ancestor in Old High German (which is, if memory serves, why the German equivalent is ficken). Most of the monosyllabic "dirty words" are Anglo-Saxon in derivation (with the exception of c**t, which comes from Latin via M.E.), and are some of the oldest words in modern English. The (apocryphal) story goes that, after the Norman Invasion, when French became the language of the nobility, Anglo-Saxon became considered the language of the lower class and was looked down upon. Add to that the Church's natural dislike of terms dealing with bodily functions, and these terms became words not used in "polite" company.
I don't necessarily buy this story (Chaucer uses p*ss, sh*t, and several other questionable words in the Canterbury Tales, including a pun on the c-word... which began with a "q" in M.E.), but it's slightly plausible...

I remember in 1982 when the troops were sent to the F---ing Islands, my cousin Vinnie kept trying to find out WHICH F---ing Islands they were going to.
Great tagline, BTW
