H.O.T. Chapter of FR Heading Back to Crawford (Special 8/17 PM Update pending)

The Heart of Texas Chapter is planning a return to Crawford on Saturday, August 27. Our purpose this time will be to team up with the Move America Forward Caravan, which will originate in California, and pick up supporters from across the country. More can be found about Move America Forward here:MAF

We hope that with this much advance notice, more Freepers will be able to join us this time.

I have spent most of the day trying to contact someone at MAF, but they are so busy they haven't gotten back to me yet. However, it shouldn't be hard to notice a caravan of buses and cars in Crawford, so we will be able to jump in with them with no problem.

I spoke with Police Chief Donnie today, and he really seemed happy to hear that we were coming back. We won't need a permit this time, as we will be a tag on to the MAF permit.

Everyone with suggestions for signs, tactics, etc. please chime in. This will be another Support the Troops Rally--but MAF will probably get in a little Sheehan bashing--which is fine with me!

All they wanted him to say was that we were there against Cindy. He wouldn't give in to them. He kept saying we were there to support the troops.

Perfect! The "reporters" were doing the same thing last night in DC. When asked "why are you here?" I replied, "to support our President, to support our troops, to support their mission, and to support our country!"

Ohhh, how I wish I had a picture of the look on their faces as they sputtered, but...but...but...

That is why it is so important to take the high road and not give them what they want. And the enjoyment of watching them squirm is worth it all. Not to mention that the enjoyment of actually really supporting the troops is the most important thing!

Well, Justa, many of the other posts here from people actually on the ground in Texas are recommending that the messages just avoid Cindy Sheehan and focus on supporting the troops. They are aware that they will be in the national limelight. After reading their advice, I think they are right. It would be so easy for the LibMedia to focus on one sarcastic "anti-Cindy" message and exclude the other 1,000 pro-troops signs.

Exactly - on both counts.

Oh, I agree. We had no "anti-Cindy" signs last night.

I really liked your "The Sixties are over." idea. It would certainly work at our Friday night outings.

My husband can't get out of his vehicle to pump gas or run into a convenience store for a soda in his uniform

Where and what service? I live near Ft. Hood, and we see troops, I've personally seen officers as high as Lt. Col., in all the restaurants, all in BDU's.

At one time, long ago and in a galaxy far away, we could not wear fatigues (pre BDU days) off base, but we could wear our "regular" uniforms. Including both the ones with the blouse (jacket to civilians) and the one with a shirt only, with or without tie.

How is it that this guy was able to attend on behalf of the Sheehan side

The article doesn't say which side he was supporting if either.

If he is a former Marine Colonel (and Marines don't generally speak of themselves as "former". Marines or "ex" Marines) then his wearing of his uniform is technically illegal. Retired service members are only allowed to wear the uniform on appropriate occasions. (I technically am one, although from the reserves and without enough "good years" to get retirement pay or benefits). National holidays, funerals, and so forth.

That said, I remember seeing a retired Army Major and a retired AF Lt. Col. at a support the troops rally... for the first Gulf war, actually before the war itself, during the Desert Shield phase.

Any nearby colleges? CRs and YRs.

Baylor University is only a few miles away in Waco. College of Mary Hardin Baylor, which has lots of troops, troops' family members and veterans as students is about 40 or so miles away in the Temple/Belton area. Central Texas College, a community college with even more troop and family enrollment, since it sets on land that is adjacent to Ft. Hood, is in Killeen as is the collocated Central Texas Branch of Tarleton State, which might become Texas A&M Central Texas. Tarleton itself is part of the Texas A&M system. There's a Temple College in Temple. The University of Texas at Austin is around 2 hours away but tends toward the liberal. Southern Methodist and Texas Christian are about 2 or 2 1/2 hours to the north, as are a couple of branches of UT (Arlington and Dallas).

I wish though, that some troops that might be "off duty" that weekend, could stroll down in their jeans and boots, just to say HI!---and let us thank them in person.

There wee several military folks at the rally last weekend. One spoke to the group, but there were at least two others that came on motorcycles. One had his CAC (common access card/ID card) in a clear pocket on his jacket when he first arrived, but I think someone reminded him of the rules and when I looked at him later, it was no longer in that pocket. (You have to show it every time you go onto the post, so likely he keeps it handy in that pocket. I keep mine (which is a Contractor version) in a back pocket of the ID badge/pass carrier I wear around my neck all day)

Same uniform dude again.

And I suspect he's another fake veteran. Look at the patch on his shoulder. It's a bright colored patch. The sort worn on a Class A uniform. On the desert camo shirt he's wearing, a brown on kaki subdued patch would be worn. On the green "European One" or the new "digital" cammo patterns, a black on green subdued version would be worn.

Can't pump gas? Because it looks undignified?,

The theory used to be that BDU's and fatigues before them, were WORK uniforms, not spit and polish dress uniforms (and in some cases, as with aircraft or vehicle mechanics could be pretty groady) and did not present the desired "Military Appearance" that the brass were trying for.

Then about 1985 or so, the notion that fatigues, BDUs, flight and tanker suits (green Nomex jumpsuits) as well, were "warrior clothing" and were just the sort of "military image" that needed to be projected.

Personally I've found it kind of weird to have military folks in engineering or programmatic meetings, some fairly formal, wearing BDU's or flight suits.

Used to be you couldn't wear fatigues/BDUs on civilian aircraft too, but today at any major hub, you'll see almost all the military folks in BDUs.

Out of state owner? It will suck to be him!

Actually not, he's a relative of the Shotgun Man. :) It still might suck to be him though, depending on if he has reduced the clutter on the road or increased it.

Great work Basil and Texas FReepers (and others who will travel to join them). If I can pull a few stings & work a few miracles I will join you. For those like me not familiar with area. what airport do we fly to?

Dallas Forth Worth most likely. Unless you've got your own plane, in which case Waco Regional or Waco executive airpark. Although there may be a scheduled commuter service into Waco. There is into Killeen, but time wise you'd be better off just flying into DFW, since you'd spend as much or more time waiting for your connection and flying to Killeen and driving up from there as you would driving down from DFW.

Gotta go, but for maps just use your favorite mapping site (Yahoo, Mapblast, MapQuest, etc) and put in:
800 E. 4th
Crawford, Texas
and that will get you pretty close to the site) Unless you want to convoy over from Waco with the MoveAmericaForward group that is.

You sure that's a wannbe, looks like it could be a for real stinking hippie. Well a modern day version of one. Almost all the original hippies are grey haired by now.

and his property might well be nothing but a big ol' prickly pear cactus patch, infested with rattlers!!!

Probalby at least some prickly pear, but I guarantee there are rattlers, it's central Texas. I had a rattler in my yard in San Antonio, and that house was nearly 6 years old and the ones behind much older yet.

Plus, the sight of an SUV probably gives most of Sheehan's "friends" the vapors.

Only those owned by gun toting right wing radicals. They had plenty of 'em in their camp last weekend, although they tended to favor vans more than SUVs.

All cars/vans/etc going to Crawford put a large C

How about a large "FR" or "FR-C", since the "Cindy" folks are going to Crawford too, and "Cindy" also starts with "C".

How about a sign caption "2 out of 3 Sheehans support the war". Casey and Mr. Sheehan, that just divorced the loon, support the war.
