Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

Where will the power come from? Once out, it isn' going to be on for a very long time. My worry is that the flooding may be irreversible. The city is under sea level. How long will it take to rebuild the levies and drain out dozens and dozens of square miles of water?

Thanks for the information below from the IV Thread. Missed replying to that one:

"If you read the building codes, you will see that the wind load design paramaters increase with the building height.

The question is...is the La code as hurricane oriented as the South floridia/Miamidade code.

In tall buildings, the damage will result from wind blown debris, especially roof gravel. The research was done bu Texas Tech.."

You're another reason to root for the lions.

Looks like that whack-job "reverend" that disrupts military funerals has been posting here.

CNN cuts off Bush comments after he discusses Katrina and before talks about Iraq.

Instead, Blitzer seeks out what dumbass thoughts Max Cleland has on Iraq.

You are misunderstanding. My understanding is this was/is a formality. Not the same as ordering them to do it. It's the process.

In these events, the U.S. government should consider detonating a low yield tactical nuke at the storms center....heat from the blast could evaporate a good portion of the storm and/or mitigate it's affects....if it's plausible the storm would destroy a U.S. city anyway...might as well nuke it...IMHO (of course I offer no scientific evidence it would work...but it's a thought.)

250 or 215?

Waiting for a repeat, I thought I heard 250 but will report back when they give wind gust reports again.

Talked to my step-daughter in Gulfport, MS this morning and told them to get the hell out now!! Told them to grab their personal affects, all their animals and children and plan on not going back. Her mother has long since left, and I can't believe she is still there.

I'm fuming!

Please pray.
