Just heard some 'good' news. Farmers Alamanac is predicting frigid cold in the south this year - They may be able to walk out on the ice pack in a few months ...
I think there is a stong impression that Mayor Nagin and Gov Blanco were really caught with their pants down and as the situation grows increasingly out of control (stranded folks at the Superdome, lots of open looting, etc.) they haven't risen to the occasion at all.
No confidence in their leadership at all.
HOW is the question do you get 10,000 plus out of a city with water filled streets? Prayers to all involved!
There is going to be a lot of junkies in a detox mode soon.
How awful.
Mindboggling NO didn't worry over the years as they sat back and watched the levys sink lower and lower. Heard all day that there's more water today rising and they had no idea where it was coming from. DUH, ever think it might be that all the rain dumped in the higher land ran down into that bowl, huh? It's amazing how hours before and weeks after a disaster, people get really stupid.
Too bad your waffling, indecisiveness is part of the reason you're in this mess now.
I hope you redeem yourself as much as you can, and help these people!
My big brother who does computer graphics down in New Orleans, evacuated to Texas with his girlfriend on Sunday. I thank G-d he heeded the warnings (which is not like him). When I saw the man from Mississippi who lost his wife when his house ripped in half I wept for him. This is really terrible. Lets all continue to pray for the people on the Gulf.
This may prove to be VASTLY more devasting than even 9/11, in terms of loss of life and property damage, and the resulting fallout in economic terms.
Would have been nice if she had felt this way as ardently BEFORE the hurricane. It was plain as day then.
Isn't it?
I don't think NO will be a viable city for a long time to come ... where's all that water going to go? It won't just drain away ...
Why not use military landing craft. The ones that run up on the beach.
They have protected props, shallow water capable.
Ferry people up to the levee around the Lake and transfer them to larger craft.
President needs to appoint a General/Admiral to go in there and order folks around. Someone needs to take over. Prayers for all those folks who need help getting out of there, especially the elderly and ill.
The Mississippi would divert down the Atchafalaya basin leaving New Orleans low and dry. It would also destroy the Port of New Orleans and probably end most of the trade traffic on the Mississippi.
It's a LONG detour to take the Ten-Tom canal to Mobile.

Did the esteemed Governor propose a plan?
I've said all along they should've loaded those people on schoolbuses & taken them out of there before the storm.
How will people live, if they are out of work for months? What happens to all their bills? Will they get late charges?
