TATP Same Component Used By Infamous Shoe Bomber

NORMAN, Okla. -- Sources confirmed Tuesday night that at least one of the components in the bomb used by Joel Henry Hinrichs III Saturday night was a product called TATP.

Technically, TATP is triacetone triperoxide. However, it's called the 'Mother of Satan' by Islamist extremists. Experts say it is made by mixing common household items such as drain cleaner and bleach to create a white powder with a strong smell.

It's so volatile that it can explode even if it's merely dropped. It can even explode spontaneously, experts say.

There have been very few reports of TATP being used in the United States; however, there have been more documented cases overseas -- including Richard Reid, who was arrested after he used TATP in his shoe and tried to light it on a flight.

I wondered about that, too. Can TATP be used that way? The articles have said that he was not successful in buying the fertilizer, but perhaps there was somebody else who was successful and they were planning on putting these triggers on larger explosive devices that they had already put in place (although it says the stadium had been swept for bombs, so presumably anything larger would have been found).

Meanwhile, to the Tulsa news channels, he was just a troubled college student. At least that was the gist of the reporting on KTUL TV 8 last night.

There are two possibilities:

1) The FBI knew about the danger that mosque and this animal posed

2) They didn't

If #1, then they were letting these things happen, or potentially happen, so they could gain more intel. If #2, then some FBIers need to be fired.

In fact, if #1, and if this animal had killed some people, then some FBIers would have needed to be fired. Seriously, when you take chances with public safety in order to gain intel, you should pay for wrong decisions.

But that's just my knee-jerk opinion, based on very few facts.

The only thing unusual in this story is that no one seceded in blowing up a bunch of people. It may not have been this idiots intent but considering where he was I doubt he wanted to go solo.

It is possible that he was working alone, in which case it would have been very difficult if not impossible to find out what he was doing and stop him. Another "copycat" idiot similar to the kid who flew a Cessna into a building (in Florida, I believe) shortly after 911.

I want to know who locked the stadium exit doors.

A Freeper on one of the other threads who was at the game with her son said he became ill right after halftime (8ish?), right about the time this bomb went off.

She stated that she and her son encountered a number of exits that she was unable to use, and they ended up walking all around the stadium until they were able to use the open exit.

Is it true that one of the available videos on this, (linked on to the site we must not post), has pictures of these locked doors? I'm not sure of the time frame, but I'd like to see what's up with this.

There have been thefts of 7,500 pounds of fertilizer in CA, 2000 pounds of jet fuel in Kentucky and a fire in a self-storage unit...fertilizer was discovered.

Wonder about other thefts or purchases in other states of fertilizer...

He may have been a loner who fed off the stories of suicide bombers in his troubled mind...He may have been curious and gone to visit the Mosque where his roommate worshipped..

He may have decided to do this act purely out of deranged suicidal thinking..alone..but then perhaps not.

He may have only intended to kill himself..

Perhaps this unstable explosive went off early before his plan to take others with him could be realized.

I don't know exactly what chemical is released but it can be deadly? We girls are taught at an early age not to mix cleaning agents - especially ammonia and bleach. At least I remember my Mom warning me about that several times growing up.

Hinrich didn't get the fertilizer he was seeking. I suspect that the original plan was ANFO bombs (Ammonium Nitrate/Fuel Oil) the type used in the first WTC attack, and the Murrah building bombings. This was apparently scrapped in favor of TATP, the components for which are easier to obtain at present...
