Damaged goods? What the hell does that mean? Whose "goods" is he? You need to put down your New York Times and rejoin the real world.

There sure is a lot of negativity going on here.

I still for the life of me can't understand the Americans thinking that the country is going in the wrong direction during a time of economic growth and low unemployment.

The Katrina issue - which for the most part was an improper evacuation State issue - and the sudden expense of gas must be playing a role with the numbers.

On the political front I think he has lost some of his base for the short term due to not nominating someone a significant portion of the right would have liked.

"I still for the life of me can't understand the Americans thinking that the country is going in the wrong direction..."

Maybe the fact that we are in the middle of an all out shooting war with an enemy determined to deploy WMD and we don't control our borders, has something to do with it. Think about it, Iraq has better border security than the richest nation on earth. If that ain't a signal that the country is heading in the wrong direction I don't what is.

"Just 33% give the President good or excellent ratings for his handling of the situation in Iraq. Thirty-nine percent (39%) say the U.S. and its allies are winning the War on Terrorism."

This number could not speak louder as to the reason for the over all low numbers. Right now people are over loaded with what they think is bad news. They hear about DeLay, but very few understand what it is about. Same for Rove/Libby situation. You have the print and electronic conservatives attacking W everyday. All of this aside the fact that just 33% are happy with the Iraq war effort shows the people being spoken to have not the foggiest idea about how to back up there complaint. This is because there are no grounds for this, especially coming right after the very successful balloting last weekend.
We will continue to see polls like this for a while but how about asking these questions: Can you name anything positive that the Democrat party stands for? When 85% say "No", then ask "Now that you have considered alternatives would you vote to have a different party in charge of our government?" I think the numbers would be a bit different.

If you had watched Brit and the All Stars last night, you would know that this is normal for ALL Presidents during their second term. Fred Barnes said that just when you think a President is down and out, BAM he comes back stronger than before.

One bone headed political blunder after another ... starting with his inept handling of the Katrina situation

You're absolutely right...he just should have stayed out of his and Rove's hurricane making machine, then blowing up the leevees was a bit of an overkill IMHO./sarc

Are you serious? I sense something deeper in your dislike for Bush.

I don't ... NO and the State of Louisiana should have been the initial responders ... not FEMA. Where I fault Bush, as I've stated several times before in other FR threads ... Bush and his handlers should have been playing heads up ball. You have a category 5 hurricane churning thru the Gulf of Mexico, taking dead aim on a blue state ... with a female 'Rat governor and a city, NO, with a black 'Rat mayor. Guess who they're going to blame when the crap hits the fan? Bush should have had his butt on AF1 winging back to Washington two days before the storm, or failing that, flown up to Colo. Springs and been at NORAD the eve of Katrina hitting the gulf coast. Had he done this the criticism from the liberal MSM would have been muted greatly ... instead, he stays on at the vacation ranch in Crawford ... then flies out to San Diego for some function the day Katrina hits.
Since Katrina hit he's been to the gulf coast 8 or 9 times ... too late, the horse is out of the paddock.

Apparently you didn't follow Katrina as closely as you thought you did. He was on the phone to Blanko 2 days before the hurricane hit, pleading with her to evacuate the people from NO. He then had a document made up for her to sign that gave him the power to call up the NG. She said she had to think about it for 24 hours...well, 24 hours later and NO was in the middle of a hurricane.

So what? The big mistake here is the idea that the Democrats will NECESSARILY benefit from this. How? The approval numbers for congressional Democrats are even lower!

I followed it closely ... what happened with all the document signing ... it turned into a he said she said argument Bush wasn't going to win in the MSM. Action, in the form of at least appearing to be concerned ... flying back to Washington early from vacation, or going up to NORAD to monitor the situation would have negated almost entirely the charges that Bush is out of touch (heard that one before?) or, that he's slow to grasp the enormity of a Katrina like catastrophe.

According to a Google search for pre 9/11 numbers, he was at 49% unfavorable, and 43% approval.
