I'm suddenly getting the above message and I can't get rid of it. I've unloaded and reloaded Internet explorer 6 countless times over the past 5 days as well as patches, updates, virus checks, bot checks, et al. and keep coming up with the same problem. My e-mail is affected too. "kernel32.dll", whatever that means, seems to come into play here as well. Anyone know anything about this?

Download mozillafirefox and forget Explorer. Since getting mozilla, I never have problems such as you mentioned.

Right, sorry... From another website I found this tip:
Additionally, repeat KERNEL32.DLL errors can often be resolved by deleting your Windows swap file, WIN386.SWP, and letting it rebuild itself.

Agreed I think you have a virus. Try some free scans and removal tools if you can't go back to a system restore point. Google the symptoms and you may get a quick fix.

Using it right now but that doesn't resolve the Outlook Express problem - I'm also starting to wonder if my HD is starting to go as this machine is going on 6 years old.

I was having the most insane, inexplicable problems, including the Windows encountering a problem, , constant shutting down, getting kicked off the net, etc. I was on a thread complaining about it all and two people far more knowlegable than me pointed to ZoneAlarm as a problematic installation. I finally uninstalled it and have not had any problems since (fingers crossed).

It is possible you have adware/spyware that is causing this.

I've seen PC's infected with loads of this and IE crashes constantly.

CAUTION: The reference to Kernel32 is the most common value that is added by the worm, but it is not the only one possible. In some cases, it may not be there. In addition to looking for and deleting this value, you must also look for values that refer to any file names that were detected as infected by this worm when you ran the full system scan. All such values must be deleted.

Check Symatec website they have removal instructions.

I'm had Zone Alarm for years and never a problem. I'm back on IE 6 now by the way and it's acting normal again - go figure.

Oh and here is a "free" way. Follow the directions AS IS becuase you can damage your computer if you do not.

This is pretty easy to rid yourself of:
> Download both of these:

> &
> http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.exe
>
> Killbox I have just updated to ver 2.0.0.76 which will work in removing
> the
> files, so make sure you have this version.
>
> Run Dllcompare, by clicking the "Run Locate.com" then click Compare
> button... when done post the log..do not reboot becuase all the filenames
> will change otherwise. Have killbox ready, you'll have a few files to

> in a certain way.
>
>
>
> Open Killbox, click the option Replace on Reboot & click the box Use Dummy
>
> You'll see the path to the filename appear in the bottom box.
>
> copy & paste 1 at a time into the top box
>
> Click the red X, Say yes to the message box that comes up, then say No to
> the next box asking you to reboot.

Windows 98? Freepmail me with the specific error message, your virus program, any other "security" programs you are running as well as any upgrades you have made recently. I have a hunch something is conflicting with a recent upgrade you have made.

Go to the following site and download Kerio Personal Firewall. Then, uninstall ZoneAlarm and install the freeware Kerio Personal Firewall:

I'd be interested to read what you have to say about zonealarm

Well, nothing good. I was having all kinds of problems and FReeper saveliberty checked with her in-house techie who said its a Checkpoint product and they have all kinds of difficulties with it. They do not recommend it. I finally uninstalled it and things are for the moment much better.

What anti virus do you use? This was probably an email that infected you. I have had broadband for ten years and used zone alarm as long as it has been available. I am sure someone has had problems along the way, but on seven machines I have not. Now Norton firewall.....

Yeah - I've thought about that. The most recent things are the Microsoft security updates so I wonder if they're in conflict somehow.

I imagine you were infected by one or more viruses (using enormous security holes like MSIE and OE, what on earth where you thinking).

The absolute only 100% positive way to recover from any infection is to format and reinstall everything. Otherwise there are good odds you are still completely vulnerable.

Reboot, at the start of rebooting hit F8, select command prompt option.
When at the 'c:>' prompt type "cd \windows"
Then type "del win386.swp"
Reboot into windows.

Should work.

One cannot expect a hard drive that is used daily to last more than three years. I replace mine every two years whether they need to be replaced or not.
