Ministers of Murder: Iran's New Security Cabinet

Human Rights Watch:

Iran’s new Minister of Interior is implicated in grave human rights violations over the past two decades, possibly including crimes against humanity in connection with the massacre of thousands of political prisoners, Human Rights Watch said in a briefing paper released today.

Human Rights Watch also said that the new Minister of Information should be investigated for his possible involvement in a dissident’s killing.

The briefing paper, Ministers of Murder: Iran’s New Security Cabinet, details credible allegations that Minister of Interior Mustafa Pour-Mohammadi and Minister of Information Gholamhussein Mohseni Ezhei were involved in extremely serious and systematic human rights violations over the past two decades.

“It’s completely unacceptable that men with such records would be serving in Iran’s government,” said Joe Stork deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “They should be removed from their posts and investigated for these terrible crimes.”

Iran’s cabinet is now dominated by former security and intelligence officials, Human Rights Watch said, raising fears that President Ahmadinejad’s government will readily resort to violence to suppress dissidents and punish critics.

During Pour-Mohammadi’s tenure as top deputy of the Ministry of Information from 1987 to 1999, agents of the ministry systematically engaged in extrajudicial killings of opposition figures, political activists, and intellectuals.

In 1988, the Iranian government executed thousands of political prisoners held inside Iranian jails. The deliberate and systematic manner in which these extrajudicial executions took place may constitute a crime against humanity under international law, Human Rights Watch said. Mustafa Pour-Mohammadi was a member of the three-person committee that ordered prisoners held in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison to their summary executions.

From 1990 to 1999, Pour-Mohammadi was director of foreign intelligence operations in the Ministry of Information. During this period, dozens of opposition figures were assassinated abroad. In some of these cases the hand of the Iranian government has been well established, while in others there are credible allegations of government involvement. Pour-Mohammadi is at the center of strong allegations of direct involvement in orchestrating these assassinations.

In 1998, agents of the Ministry of Information killed five prominent activist intellectuals in Tehran. An Iranian source with first-hand knowledge of the investigation told Human Rights Watch that Pour-Mohammadi was implicated by investigators in those killings and even that an arrest warrant was about to be issued for him. “But instead it was arranged that he leave his post in the Ministry of Information,” this source said.

Gholamhussein Mohseni Ezhei, the new Minister of Information, served as prosecutor general of the Special Court for the Clergy and in this position spearheaded the prosecution of prominent reformist clerics. He has also been a key figure in suppressing press freedoms, resulting in the closure of more than 100 newspapers since 2000. Several journalists and activists have alleged that Mohseni Ezhei ordered the kidnap and killing of Pirouz Davani, a dissident and political activist, in 1998.

Human Rights Watch called on President Ahmadinejad to relieve Pour-Mohammadi and Mohseni Ezhei of their duties immediately and to establish an independent mechanism to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into their alleged crimes.

If President Ahmadinejad fails to remove Pour-Mohammadi and Mohseni Ezhei from his cabinet, the Parliament should call for a vote of no-confidence and initiate its own independent investigation, Human Rights Watch said.

“It’s downright dangerous to have men like this in charge of key ministries,” said Stork. “The international community must make clear that it holds the government of President Ahmadinejad responsible for the safety of Iranian political activists and dissidents.”

What is truly tragic is that no mechanism exists to remove these criminals from power. Their continued authority demonstates that the UN is not a viable organization for world peace.

The most extreme cases of despotism must be met with overwnelming and definitive force. The alternative is the continuing slaughter of innocents by the millions in the name of protecting moral turpitude.

There is no justification for allowing governments to go unpunished for the murder of their citizens.

Amos, I agree. When Bush declared his new doctrine of overthrowing such people in contrast to the past policies of accommodating them to prevent their falling into the Soviet camp, we were on our way to doing as you wish.

Regardless of Russia's pretend abandonment of Communism, they only abandoned it as an economic model, we are still at war with the same old monster. The difference is they have made much more headway in the USA with their silent revolution. Our biggest problem in transforming the Middle East is fighting our own Communist Democrats here at home.

Our military is probably the best it has ever been but we are woefully under manned to be the global policemen. First RWR had to overcome the damage Jimmy Carter had done and then Slick Wille repeated Carter's actions, re decimating our military. Reinstating the draft would be very difficult in today's political climate but if the Democrats were the patriots they claim, they would be behind us and the country's attitude would be much different. Then there would be many more volunteers. Instead the Democrats are fighting our recruiters at the universities.

Without this enemy within, the Democrats and other Communists, we would be much further down the road to implementing the Bush Doctrine and Iran and Syria would soon be Democracies, too.

Although strict religious doctrine has much less appeal in a secular republic form of government, as Benjamin Franklin warned us, a free and open society is hard to keep. Totalitarianism doesn't work because it is contrary to human nature and freedom is greatly challenged because it gives near free rein to human nature.

I am at a loss to understand what has become of liberalism. In the name of anti-authoritianism they espouse doctrines founded upon vicious totalitarian ideologies.

Do some research, perhaps just google the term, on the Frankfort Group. Those were/are Communist who saw Communism's failing as an economic system and that it could not compete with free enterprise. They then set about transforming the selling of Communism from a purely Marxist economic system into a cultural system. Along this line they used many of the works of Sigmund Freud and blended those into a psychological approach for silently transforming a society from freedom to Communism.

They spell it out quite clearly and you see it unfolding in America today just as if you were watching it on a screen.

That is because I misspelled it. Should be Frankfurt. However, I googled it and found what may be a successor formed in 2001 under the EU. Not sure if it is the same but they describe themselves as "progressive".

Whoa! I was in the SDS in the 60's and broke from it because ofthe expressed Marxism. I never realized the depth of the infiltration. My assumption was always that the ACP was funding the organization and editing its publications. I was a writer for a Cambridge SDS pub and was constantly being rewritten. I quit because the ghost (to me) writers were not faithful to my ideas.

It required many more years for me to realize the destructive power of the cooptive liberalism that began then. What we have today in liberalism is the precise opposite of what liberalism meant to me in the 60's. The leaders of liberalism today were my enemies in the 60's.

It is very clear to me that liberal political leaders do not believe their own spin. People such as Pelosi, Gore, Kennedy, and others (all of them) are sheer opportunists. They do not even understand their politics. They vomit their bilge because they believe it is the high ground of political enlightenment. They are fools to a man.

I am very hopeful that the US electorate is intuitively appalled by the spread of Marxist doctrine throughout our culture. This explains the gradual failing of the Democrat party, a hapless victim of PC Marxism.

As matters become more clear through the efforts of Rush and others such as this forum, the Am people will see the truth more and more clearly and will reject with greater vigor the horrors of modern liberalism.

Your background puts you in an excellent position to recognize what is going on. You were smart enough not to become what Stalin called a "Useful idiot" meaning those who truly believed the communist bilge that was intended for public consumption. The real manipulations were going on behind the scenes.

Hillary is hardcore. It is hard to know how many of the others are simply opportunists but I doubt any are unaware. However, it is hard for me to understand the opportunism in a position that is generally rejected by the American people. They must know they are using rigged polls, rigged elections, and have a house-organ media that aids them in telling bald faced lies. I suspect something more, like lots of Soros money.

Regardless, we saw from the Clinton administration that turning the FBI and IRS into their own KGB to threaten and harm their enemies is in step with Communism and that they are anxious to use them again.

She was praised during her studies at Berkley for her profound understanding of the techniques of Karl Marx. Because Hillary is so dangerous it is disturbing to see some who are trying so hard to divide the Republican Party. Only a united front can defeat her. I am convinced many on FR who debate the border issue, the court nominees, taxes, the size of government, all the normal issues, are quick to bash Bush and the Republican Party. Rigorous debate is good but many are using the issues to try to divide us and that only helps the enemy, Hillary and the Communists.

I am amazed the 2000 and 2004 elections were so close despite the obvious advantages they have with a unified media, lots of special interests money, and the unabashed willingness to lie. I think despite that they are still dependent on election fraud.

Since Perot is such a self-proclaimed super patriot and a graduate of the Naval Academy (so was Carter, anything funny going on there?), I was confused as to why he purposely challenged Bush, resulting in the guaranteed election of Clinton. I later learned he had an agreement with the Clintons that his company, Perot Systems, would handle two of the five districts that Hillary Care would have divided the county into.

He sold out the country for a few pieces of silver and didn't even get those, at least not overtly.
