On another topic, my XP keeps trying to update me to Service Pack 3 but I don't have the disk. How can I stop it from trying to do something it cannot do?

How can I stop it from trying to do something it cannot do? As someone not overly familiar with Windows, I would suggest try to turn off Automatic Updates.

They tried to end support for NT4, but got hammered for it. They ended up supporting it for more then a year longer then they wanted to.

Home's a POS anyway. And the upgrade from it to Pro can toast your existing apps and data (thank God I had backup!) even if you don't make any mistakes on your own.
That said, there are advantages to a subscription licensing architecture but you're completely at the mercy of a marketeer who decides it's time to jack up the prices. I run both Microsoft and Red Hat at home and am in a position to say "no" to Bill's boys. Not everyone is.

XP Home or Pro?
You can shut off auto updating.

Do you mean Sp2? There is no Sp3 yet for XP. You shouldn't need a disk, you can get the update online through Windows Update. If you are prepared to deal with the setting changes (Google XP service pack 2, you should be able to find some pages on what it changes, and how to make sure everything works afterward), it is a recommended update that actually takes some pretty large steps towards making Windows secure.

Great. I'll bet my copy of Office XP will run a lot faster on Linux, right?

XP Home is closer to Me.
XP Pro is closer to 2000.
Companies like Best Buy, Dell, Hp etc have been making a killing off selling Home knowing people would want to buy the Pro upgrade.

OKAY....so we have XP Home on a laptop here at home....what should we do....our desktop has XP Pro......any suggestions out there? (And, I'm not looking for smart a** remarks/suggestions.)
To: MineralMan
Yes it will. You can get an emulator that will run it. In fact I know of a sysadmin who built a custom image on his dell laptop that ran win2k and office on an emulator. He would fire it up on the weekends when he had duty to remote in on a vpn to fix issues.
