WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The United Nations must act to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons, the United States and three European powers said Thursday.

The United States, Germany, France and the United Kingdom called for an emergency meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency to report on Iran's defiance to the U.N. Security Council, a step that could lead to sanctions against Tehran, possibly including an embargo on Iran's oil exports.

"Our talks with Iran have reached a dead end," German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in Berlin.

"The council should call for the Iranian regime to step away from its nuclear weapons ambitions," U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said. Rice said the four powers would consult with other nations, including Russia and China, two permanent members of the Security Council that have been less hostile to Iran's program.

Rice said that even Russia and China have soundly denounced Iran's move on Tuesday to resume uranium enrichment by unsealing IAEA seals on its equipment.

Enriched uranium can be used either to generate electricity or for nuclear weapons. Iran has said it intends only peaceful uses, but has rejected offers by the Europeans to provide uranium for nuclear power.

"I would hope that, now seeing the very powerful reaction of the international community, that Iran would take a step back and look at the isolation that it is about to experience," Rice said.

The geopolitical tensions were a major topic on Wall Street on Thursday. Stocks retreated while U.S. Treasurys benefited from their status as a safe haven during crises

Crude oil futures prices fell from session highs to trade at $64.35, up 41 cents. Iran produces about 4.2 million barrels a day of crude oil, about 5.5% of the world's supply

"The market is very nervous about calls for sanctions against Iran," said Peter Cardillo, chief market strategist at S.W. Bach. "The fear is about how Iran might retaliate if there are sanctions. Basically, a lot of speculative money is going into energy now."

Does this matter? Seriously, they are such a bunch of pricks in Europe, that I can't believe they are sincere about any of this. And then they take to a prick pansy group of criminals like the UN. Nothing is going to happen and none of it matters until the US and Israel march in, destroys Iran, and is critisized by Muslim france.

With europe potentially in range of the mad Iranian's weapon a major shift in opinion is simply self interest and the UN will reflect that. All was fine and dandy while someone else was the target...now the Great Satan suddenly has european children LOL!

The mad mullah's might end up in exile in France (again) and the monkeyface leader better watch his back 24/7.

I agree. The tactic of bringing Iran into line is quite easy and can be accomplished in one or two weeks of massive carpet bombing, not of their nuclear capacity, but complete and utter destruction of their oil industry, to be followed by destruction of their known nuclear sites. The country cannot function without its oil revenues and will be brought to its knees in short shrift. If the USA destroys Iraq, Syria will fall, and the Middle East will be well headed to freedom and Democracy. You think this is a far fetched plan, keep your eyes and ears open folks!!!

Well, that sounds encouraging. The oil revenue props up the mad regime, the weapons programme depends upon the same revenue. Now tell me, who is their biggest and best customer?

I have no idea, but I suspect Europe will take in the shorts. However, even if we have a piece of the action, the pain will be worth the effort to bring down the tyrants of the Middle East, once and for all.

Ahem... you are wrong.

last week the german chancelor agreed with the president of the US that Irans struggle to develop atomic weapons must fail.

In the moment the WSC + germany (- france) is seeing to further steps and a common strategy on this issue.

Iran is a lot closer to us (europe) than to you and we will have to deal with them - and I think that is understood.

so what's your choice here - insult me further as a prick without knowing me since it's easy to insult via the internet (size e.g. doesn't matter) or are you going to invest some thoughts on your next posting ?

france is - I think...

well - they got World's second largest depot of natural gas.
They are really hard to ignore - on the other hand - a nuke in the ape's hand on your front door makes you forget your gas bill quite fast.
