report: HUNDREDS turned away as Ann Coulter ENERGIZES packed house at Loyola Marymount - PHOTOS!
Voice of controversy [ANN COULTER begins YAF tour @ Loyola L.A.: Coming soon to a college near YOU!] ^ | January 20, 2006 | RonDog [and FRiends]

FReepers and bloggers on hand to provide THEIR commentary (and PHOTOS!)
HUNDREDS turned away as
Ann Coulter ENERGIZES a "standing room only" crowd at LMU

(James Carville, not quite ready for prime time, also present; unsuccessfully tries out new material)
The following "Letter from the Editors" (printed in the program for last night's event) set the tone for the entire evening:
"...Many people say that this a politically apathetic campus.

They say that LMU students don't care don't care about worldly issues. The critics believe that this evening will be a failure. They think that students won't show up for this once in a lifetime event. They think that we wont't be mature enough to allow the speakers to express their views. They don't think that this university is ready to join the elites.

But on Thursday night, we the student body of LMU will once again prove our critics wrong.

The university is having an awakening, and this event will be an indication of what's to come.

We will greet two of the biggest names in politics with dignity and respect..."

Well, they certainly got THAT part right!
It must be a RELIGIOUS school thing. :o)
If last night's event was a test, LMU passed with flying colors! Not only did they prove that they had good manners, they turned out in MUCH LARGER numbers than the nay-sayers had predicted, completely overwhelming the tiny venue chosen this FIRST of what now may be MANY similar events.

Both Ann and the Serpenthead seem to have been surprised by the very different (i.e., thoughtful, and RESPECTFUL) kind of audience that they encountered last night during their "back-to-back" appearances at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles last night, which were part of "First Ammendment Week," sponsored by the LMU student newspaper, the Loyolan.

Not sure about Carville, but I understand that Ann generally encounters a MUCH DIFFERENT reception on a OTHER college campi -- where she has had to deal with pie-throwing goons, and disruptors blasting loud music through the PA system during her speech, to drown out her voice.

Our small group of FReepers (and FRiends of Ann) who were able to get inside saw virtually NO protestors outside, and only TWO (rather lame) attempts to heckle her inside...
More soon.

Carville's shirt is so GAY!
Funny that you should mention that.
You should have seen the way that Carville DISTANCED HIMSELF from the whole discussion of "gay marriage" when it came up...

...something about it not being one of HIS priorities. :o)

He was VERY DETERMINED to get away from THAT issue, which is very popular with the "loony left," but NOT with 90% of REAL Americans, as Ann reminded us later in HER speech.

"NATALIE got to hang out with Ann, before AND after the event, as she SHE was the event co-ordinator.
How's THAT for a reward for doing the right thing?"

I Love Ann Coulter's style and politics, But for someone to hang out with, I'd take Natalie over her any day ;o)

...Even worse (for HIM) was the crowd's response to his attempts to throw them chunks of the kind of hard core left wing political "red meat," that might worked at a Michael Moore movie opening, but fell COMPLETELY flat in this respectful gathering.
LOTS of "crickets" -- awkward silences with everyone's eyes averted -- where the applause line was obviously intended to be.
ANOTHER Carville fiasco was his attempt to re-frame the POWERFUL term "politically correct" that we use to (accurately) attack the left...
...by referring the Left's CONSTANT whine that we are always "attacking their patriotism."
His lame attempt went something like this:
"People who ask questions (about President Bush's policy in Iraq) should not have to face the 'PATRIOT correct' police."

That attempt to provoke the masses got absolutely NO response from the LMU audience, and I remember thinking to myself, "This is a tough crowd..." -- for CARVILLE!" :o)

To each, his own. :o)
But you should have seen the crowd of ATTRACTIVE young college women whose hearts were broken when they could not meet their idol after her speech was over!

There were at least a DOZEN students -- MOST of them women, MANY with copies of Ann's books to get signed, or with digital cameras to get their pictures taken with Ann -- who came forward, unsolicited.

There would have been HUNDREDS more, if the university had even HINTED that Ann might be available after the speech -- to meet her fans.

As it happens, we think that she DID meet (briefly) with the staff of the college newspaper -- to THANK THEM for inviting her to speak.

We (FReepers and FRiends of Ann, who ALSO came forward at the end of her speech -- to try to talk with her) did our best at "damage control" -- telling them about Ann's VERY BUSY schedule, with her book deadline rapidly approaching...

...and we told them about Ann's NEXT visit to Los Angeles on MARCH 27, when she may have a little more time for them, as her new book will be finished, and off to the publisher.

Still, they REALLY wanted to meet Ann -- as a ROLE MODEL, and as a HERO.

We are working on a SECURE LOCATION where we can make that happen, if Ann can fit us into her schedule -- NEXT time, in March.

Deservedly!

I talked to the YAF guy, Patrick Coyle, referred to Rondog's reply 138 http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1561975/posts?page=138#138

Coyle said that the Coulter George Washinton Univ. speech, is first come, first served, no advance tickets.

He also gave me the email address of a person at GWU, who might have info, such as when they would open the doors. My email to him bounced.

Per what Coyle told me, the event itself is Friday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 pm in the Continental Ballroom of the Marvin Center at George Washington Univ.

Since it is on a Friday night, the more active members of DC Chapter will likely be at Walter Reed defending our war-wounded heroes from the Code Pink blood dance.

I'll let Angelwood, kristinn, and tgslTakoma decide whether this is worth a full DC Chapter ping. Maybe some DC FReepers, who are unable to go to Walter Reed because of medical problems, or who want to skip WR that night in favor of Coulter (not a "skip" that I would encourage), would want to see Coulter that night.

THANK YOU for the update on Ann's visit to DC on 2/10, Bill!
I did not realize that there would be a conflict with the DC Chapter's EXTRAORDINARY efforts to protect our wounded warriors at Walter Reed from the Code Pink wackos.
(OBVIOUSLY, that has a much higher priority.)
Ann will CERTAINLY understand about your not being there...
...particularly , and she will apparently be at CPAC (in Washington, DC) 2/9 through 2/11.

I think what he choose to dress in was disrespectful to himself and the venue.
I'd expect a lazy 90 year old who didn't give a damn about how he dressed to look like that.

At one point, a grown-up (who identified himself as Carville’s personal friend) cheered when Carville said Bill Clinton didn’t kill anyone when he lied about sex.

Not true, Bill Clinton's promiscuity and his attempts to cover it up do kill people. He promotes promiscuity, as do his supporters. This leads to STD's including AIDS which kill, unplanned pregnancies which often end in abortion, adultery and divorce which destroy a stable society. This is a major cause of all manner of crime, much of which end up with someone dead.
