He must have bypassed his chain-of-command. I am sure he knew the consequences of his actions....good on him. In too many hierarchies, managers/officers feel most threatened by the kind of person who would blow the whistle on stupidity for the good of the unit. They fear they would be next

What's interesting is not only that the JAG has absolutely no combat infantry experience (being a woman) and that she issued an order without the authority to do so, but that the soldier who blew the whistle on her was disciplined for doing so.Bush should exercise authority as commander in chief to kick her butt out, now.

Instead of the open-tip, snipers were forced to take M-60 machine gun rounds out of belts and use them instead.Tracers I hope.

Kinder, gentler, ammunition...........Exactly. They're for the kinder, gentler, terrorists, who will now cut your throat with a butter knife. LOL

"the reversal was followed by the Army officials' taking retaliation against a sniper who blew the whistle on the bogus order."
Without which our troops would still be using the inferior ammo!
Somebody higher up the chain of command needs to fix this, and get that sniper back on the job.
Damn busybody JAG bureaucrats to begin with.

How about "hollow-tipped" spitballs??

So, our guys loose a sniper, because the lawyers in the army are fubar. The line officer that allowed the JAG order to go out to operational units without verifying it needs to hang up his costume jewelry and move on to a civilian career.

Instead of the open-tip, snipers were forced to take M-60 machine gun rounds out of belts and use them instead. That doesn't sound right. The normal approach is to supply a sniper with high quality ammo that is loaded to a consistent spec. The sniper verifies the behavior of his batch with a couple test rounds to verify point of impact vs the current sighting of his rifle. The rest of the batch goes out to do the assigned task. Plucking rounds out of an M-60 machine gun belt is like randomly selecting Yugos and Geo metros before competing in a NASCAR race. It doesn't pass the smell test.

Hello,
First post in a long time. I'm over in Iraq, doing sniper missions for the USA. I have not seen or heard of any edict from on high about the use ammunition other than APIT in the .50 cal. If there was such an order posted , we still have in the inventory M118 which has a 173 gr. FMJ projectile, and gives an honest MOA.The 175 gr. Matchking has been loaded in our sniper ammo since at least 1995, when I first saw it and tested it.
JAG issued a ruling on the use of this ammo way back then, said as the ammo is not designed to expand, it can be used for sniper ammo. M 60 ammo has an exceptance of 4 MOA. This equates to approximately a 20" group at 500M. It can be used , just not the best, and it does not mate up with the ballistic cam on the day optic.
As far as the ammo being accurate at 1500M, I call BS. The round goes subsonic at approx. 900M. Very difficult to hit, after this fact.
Best,

It seems like this war on terrorism is like Vietnam in at least one regard - it's a two-front war.
One against the enemy abroad and one against those impeding the effort here at home.

Instead of the open-tip, snipers were forced to take M-60 machine gun rounds out of belts and use them instead. I imagine that did wonders for accuracy. NOT!
