WASHINGTON - Despite disillusionment with the war in Iraq, a majority of Americans support taking military action against Iran if that country continues to produce material that can be used to develop nuclear weapons, a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has found.
The poll, conducted Sunday through Wednesday, found that 57 percent of Americans favor military intervention if Iran's Islamic government pursues a program that could enable it to build nuclear arms.
Support for military action against Tehran has increased over the past year, the poll found, even though public sentiment against the war in neighboring Iraq remains strong: 53 percent said they believe the situation there was not worth going to war.

What was the % when we went into Iraq?
I guess my point is that polls don't mean much.

Iran is much stronger case than Iraq was. They are openly and prolifically funding terrorism.

Even on Iraq, although a small majority polls as saying it "wasn't" worth going to war, the majority is responsible enough NOT to want a pullout that endangers what we have gained. In effect, Americans have supported the current policy throughout, because they overwhelmingly supported the decision for war at the time.

which means in a 'real poll'..the numbers would be around 70%..(rolling eyes)

You know what would really be entertaining concerning this problem of Iran? Asking Senator Kerry what he thinks about it. I'm betting that would be a riot.

The poll means plenty. Americans supported the Iraq war and have continued to support it. We make decisions in the here and now, not on polls measuring whether we have changed our minds about a decision two years ago. If Americans support military action the politicians will feel more confident in acting. If democrats later make us regret attacking Iran, so be it.
If Americans will think strategically, Iran will be much easier to handle now that it is book ended between two of our allies, Iraq and Afghanistan, rather than being surrounded by our enemies.

Step 1) translate the bill of rights into local languages and have UAVs drop them over villages, hamlets and cities though out the country.
Step 2) drop detailed instructions on how to build a small metal shop capable of machining low cost pistols and machine guns.
Step 3) Drop small packages of ammunition
Step 4) Drop an instruction manual on how to conduct ambushes
Step 5) Have CIA start identifying resistance cells and supplying intelligence on the movements of the Mullahs and Sr. Government officials
Step 6) Drop in Special Forces A teams to organize resistance cells and train them in combat, espionage, sabotage and democracy.
Step 7) As resistance cells organize and gain control of areas, provide logistical support
Step 8) Dispatch a few dozen UAVs with 500 lb laser guided bombs to take out any remaining Mullahs

Let some of the Euro countries take the lead. I don't think we should have to bear the majority of the burden... Make them send a good of their troops as well as $ in this cause.
I was all for the overthrowing Hussein in Iraq...

What amazes me is that over at DU they are saying how meaningless and tltled these polls because of this one. Yet, further in their threads is one in which it shows Bush's aprroval ratings are the lowest ever ... this one they take as gospel proof that polls represent the real truth.

All I know is if they succeed in creating "the bomb" I wouldnt be suprised it was detonated by a terrorist in the center of New York City or Washington D.C.

While I agree this is a serious problem, so far the Iranian government has not transferred advanced weaponry to terrorists - to start with a nuke would mean the end of their country and they surely know that.

Iran will pass a nuke to Terrorists and then deny they did it, just like OBL tried to deny he had anything to do with 9/11.

"to start with a nuke would mean the end of their country and they surely know that." But with an end-times death cult centered on the reincarnation of the 12 Imam, you can't exactly say we have a rational actor on our hands.
Maybe they just want to accelerate the second coming.

Yeah well they have funded terrorists for atleast the past 20 years and continue to fund some of the insurgents in iraq. I seriously doubt these people wouldnt give a nuke to terrorist. After all wouldnt it be "GODS work" to attack the "Great SATAN".
Id say if they do I would recommending leveling a major city in reprisal

"Iraq was a strong case up to the invasion. Iran is getting there rapidly." Just saw Bob Beckel on H&C say that that high number so suddenly suprised him.
I think he meant that he was suprised so many people were paying attention to the Iranian situation and had such a strong opinion without being 'prompted.'

The significant military assets in most European countries (excluding Britain) consists largely of one red telephone per capital with the White House and/or Pentagon on speed-dial. It would be nice if they'd quit whining and moaning whenever we do decide to do anything, but most European nations just don't have the military prowess to conduct any sort of successful operation without the leadership and overwhelming participation of American (and British, Australian, etc.) troops.
