'Brokeback Mountain' Gets 8 Oscar Nominations'
Yahoo News ^ | 1/31/06 | AP

The cowboy love story "Brokeback Mountain" led the Academy Awards field Tuesday with eight nominations, among them best picture and honors for actor Heath Ledger and director Ang Lee.

Also nominated for best picture were the Truman Capote story "Capote"; the ensemble drama "Crash"; the Edward R. Murrow chronicle "Good Night, and Good Luck"; and the assassination thriller "Munich."

The Johnny Cash biography, "Walk the Line," considered a likely best picture nominee, was shut out, though Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon earned acting nominations for the film.

George Clooney picked up two nominations, as supporting actor for his role as a steadfast CIA undercover agent in "Syriana" and best director for his Edward R. Murrow tale "Good Night, and Good Luck."

Along with best-actor contender Ledger, and directing nominee Lee, "Brokeback Mountain" scored nominations for Michelle Williams as supporting actress, Jake Gyllenhaal as supporting actor and Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana for their screenplay adaptation of Annie Proulx's short story.

Jake Gyllenhaal as supporting actor...

Was Jake the... how is it put? The... passive partner in the love affair?

Just like hollywood. Give second prize to the "woman."

"Capote" was playing in a couple of theaters in the DC area when it was released. Now it's in many theaters. It's being discovered for what it is - excellent.

Also, these people do not understand that...when they push the envelope so blatantly far...further destroying the credibility of the Motion Picture Academy...even independents who care little about the gay issue...start to say "now wait a minute!"

The blatancy of this blows my mind. Why don't they just rename it the Gay Academy Awards and get it over with?

These people all want Brokeback to be up there with Casablanca and Gone with the Wind.

I didn't have to watch "Debbie Does Dallas" to comment on its moral character either.

That seals it. I'll watch reruns of Gilligan's Island before I watch the Academy Awards.

Thank you very little...

Does anyone know if we've ever had it happen before?...where you have both BEST ACTOR and ACTRESS nominees, but the film doesn't get a BEST PICTURE nomination..?

My reaction exactly. Walk The Line should've been nominated, but perhaps a story about someone rising above the ignorance and drug-induced perversions of Hollywood isn't what they're interested in.

Just like the snubbing of "The Passion" a couple years ago. I won't be watching the Oscars again for the umpteenth year in a row.

Have seen all except Brokeback... I found them all quite remarkable movies - each in their own way. Too bad Brokeback usurped Walk the Line...

thanks for thread Dr.S

at the same time I'm sure a buttload (ha!) of FReepers will be willing to trash the flick not having seen it

Very predictable nominations except for Walk The Line getting shafted.

Walk the Line has been held over at a historic theater near me called the Roxy. It shows movies after they leave the multiplex. The public likes Walk the Line, but they don't count.

Will Michael Moore have a seat - or two or three - of honor at Awards night?

It's the 8th-top-grossing Western film of all time, and will rise to 5th within a week.

I've given the idiot George Clooney too many opportunities to prove he was worth all the hype. I'll never waste another minute or penny on anything he's involved in.

"Walk the Line" definitely deserved a "Best Picture" nomination, imo.

There is no way Brokeback 'usurped' Walk the Line. It was Munich that knocked off Walk the Line. The thing is that with the 'preferential ballot' system used by the Oscars, a film has to have a lot of first and second place votes to get nominated. Walk the Line could've been 2nd and 3rd on everyone's ballot, but still missed out because it didn't have enough first place votes.
