The Dick Cheney shooting incident will, in a way, go away. And, in a way, not--ever. Some things stick. Gerry Ford had physically stumbled only once or twice in public when he became, officially, The Stumbler. Mr. Ford's stumbles seemed to underscore a certain lack of sure-footedness in his early policies and other decisions. The same with Jimmy Carter and the Killer Rabbit. At the time Mr. Carter told the story of a wild rabbit attacking his boat he had already come to be seen by half the country as weak and unlucky. Even bunnies took him on. Same with Dick Cheney. He's been painted as the dark force of the administration, and now there's a mental picture to go with the reputation. Pull! Sorry, Harry! Pull!

I don't think Cheyney was hired because of his political skills. Essentially he's GWB's chief of staff. You see, unlike the Democrats who like to crow about how their VP's are 'involved' in policy, Mr. Cheyney actually is -- and it drives them nuts.

I read that Dick has been nominated for the Dan Quail VP Lifetime Achievement Award for a event that will never be lived down.

Seriously, Mr. Cheney's failure to inform the press just makes me respect him more. He is the best V.P. in my lifetime, and fortunately, President Bush seems to realize what an asset he is.

Exactly right!

I really haven't figured out how Peggy Noonan has seemed to lost perspective of that. Too much time inside the beltway.

"Columns like this are a sterling example of why our man Ron hired Peggy to write the speeches, and other people to give policy advice."

You got that right! If Cheney stepped down we would hear from the Demonic-Rats about about "Cheneys culture of corruption" forced him to step down. Then we would hear that it was really Bush's "culture of corruption" that Cheney acted upon and is just plain evil and he is the "fall guy" for the corrupt Bush. Peggy Noonan is a hell of a speech writer but she has a tin ear when it comes to the day to day political battle. Cheney is a great Vice President. He will be there until the end of the Bush Presidency. If he did resign, which he will not, the Demonic-Rats in the Senate would turn the affirmation process into a political hate circus on whomever President Bush submitted to the Senate. It "ain't gonna" happen!

Ha ha, the libs are so wrong with their perception.

Dick Cheney can continue to be an impressive leader. Hunting accidents can be viewed as masculine.

Now, if we want funny....

Too much time inside the beltway.

Yes, I'm afraid so. My response to much of her recent writing has been, "What planet are YOU on, honey?"

She's an outstanding writer, and, I suppose, a fine person, but she doesn't seem to be paying attention to the real world these days ... or even paying much attention to "inside the beltway," if she thinks being Vice President is going to make someone other than Dick Cheney a successful Presidential candidate in 2008. Remember Al Gore, Peggy?

I find it curious that Peggy would advocate any resignation. It would only weaken a Presidency.

Remaining strong and supportive to VP Cheney not only makes this whole scavenging hunt by the media look like it is, but continues to make this Administration look strong, and are able to weather any storm.

I actually think most Americans are counting on President Bush to remain loyal to Vice President Cheney. If he would toss him aside, it would make everything look suspect.

Where's her common sense?

They've already tried the wearing of orange ties, an attempt to take the sting out of the incident by showing they don't feel the sting. Duck! Ha ha!

Noonan plays up the humor of the shooting, though that ended for most conservatives the moment we heard that Whittington's injuries might be more serious than originally reported. Pretty tone deaf for someone who once was one of the best conservative speechwriters.

To publicly speculate on dumping Cheney immediately after he experienced such a personal nightmare goes well beyond tone deafness, it lacks common decency.

His recounting of the decision on how to handle it in the press seemed to reflect only incompetence, not malevolence.

Incompetence at what? Informing the press of a personal matter that did not affect national security? Having more concern for his friend than for feeding the media sharks? Oh, I get it! Peggy still considers herself one of the sharks! Too bad, I had a higher opinion of her.

As for "Pull! Sorry Harry! Pull!," you moron, they weren't trap shooting.

Peggy, please either stop digging, or retire.

Well, well, well, even Peggy Noonan isn't immune to media bias. I thought only plebeians were influenced by the MSM. We now have Reagan's speech writer not only being influenced by the liberals' criticism on Cheney, but she is dishing out some of her own:

So Mr. Bush may feel in time that he has reason to want to put in a new vice president in order to pick a successor who'll presumably have an edge in the primaries--he's the sitting vice president, and Republicans still respect primogeniture. They will tend to make the common-sense assumption that a guy who's been vice president for, say, a year and a half, is a guy who already knows the top job. Anyway, the new guy will get a honeymoon, which means he won't be fully hated by the time the 2008 primaries begin.

This new vice president would, however, have to be very popular in the party, or the party wouldn't buy it. Replacing Mr. Cheney would be chancy. The new veep would have to get through the Senate, which has at this point at least three likely contenders for the nomination, at least two of whom who would not, presumably, be amused.

Peggy, Peggy, Peggy, as Elbert Green Hubbard pointed out, “an ounce of loyalty is worth a pound of cleverness." Et tu, brute?
