Gitmo Study Nears Completion

I have received most of the surveys back from the blogswarm that undertook a review of the newly-released documents regarding the Guantanamo Bay detainees. Most of the study's volunteers have remarkably similar comments about the information provided in the documents. The Denbeaux study which prompted this blogswarm reached a number of conclusions that appear now to be highly subjective assumptions. For instance, the Duke wrote after his review:

Among the pre-war documents posted online yesterday by the Pentagon is a letter from a member of Saddam's intelligence apparatus indicating al-Qaida and the Taliban had a relationship with the regime prior to the 9-11 attacks.

Pajamas Media Doesn't Just Report History, It Helps To Make It

Back in mid-February Pajamas Media went to Washington to cover the Intelligence Summit and did video interviews with Congressman Hoekstra (chair of the House Intell Committee), former DCI Woolsey and Richard Perle, among others. In all those interviews we discussed our idea - new to all of them - that the myriad untranslated Saddam tapes and documents be released to the blogosphere for translation.  Today, it was announced that at the instigation of Hoekstra these documents have been released by the Pentagon for ... and this is how it was worded on the Brit Hume Show on Fox News ... for translation by the blogosphere.

So, the MSM is slowly picking up on the historic release of thousands of documents from Saddam Hussein's archives. But not without making a concerted effort to downplay and undermine the story. Readers are calling attention to the disclaimers included in this ABC News story.  Will we see that helpful disclaimer--"this document is of limited evidentiary value"--the next time ABC News or Newsweek or the NYTimes or the Washington Post uses unnamed, uncorroborated informants?

I would like to remind everyone that CNS News revealed the existance of 42 pages of important Iraqi documents in October 2004. They subsequently went on to publish them in their entirety. I would suggest that these be added to this to the PJM archive.

 

Stephen Hayes most recent article in the Weekly Standard is a real eye-opener too.

In the minutes to come, we regained composure, biting our lips as Amir worked away at the rest of the document with the knife blade, as if performing open-heart surgery. A second blob of corrective fluid came off, revealing another "bin Laden." And then a third.

How Innocuous Were Those Tapes, Anyway?

Not long ago, ABC News broadcast a number of tapes that recorded meetings of Iraqi officials before the American invasion, including Saddam Hussein and his inner circle. After the tapes aired, the general opinion was that the tapes had some historical and contextual interest but provided no smoking guns on Saddam's instransigence. The DoD and DNI have now posted transcripts of all the tapes, and the information contained within them may change that evaluation.

Ray Robison has begun a blogswarm to highlight the review of the documents. Be sure to read his ongoing commentary on the transcripts. For instance, page 6 of this document shows that Saddam was kept informed of the status of three German scientists working in the employ of Saddam:
