The New York Times Company yesterday warned of a first-quarter slump, pinning the blame squarely on weak advertising business at the Boston Globe and other Times-owned papers in the region.

The warning came as company chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr. planned a trip to Boston next week, creating anxiety in the newsrooms of the Globe and other New England Newspaper Group papers.

The company had said last year that it planned to cut 500 jobs companywide, primarily in the fourth quarter of 2005 and the begining of 2006.

The warning was a "disaster," according to Ed Atorino, an analyst at Benchmark Inc. "The Boston Globe seems to be having some major problems in help wanted, retail, across the board."

Atorino said the group's 12 percent decline in February ad revenue was "probably the worst of any major newspaper group."

The Times said that job reductions will cost $8 million to $10 million in the first quarter that ends March 31.

Some of the news stories on the internet are sourced by the leftest news papers. They require you to register to read them. Don't register as it gives them a count of hits on the web sight. Kind of like subscribing to their slim.

How's a legitimate Newspaper chain like the NYT or Boston Globe going to survive with out the gov't bailing them out.

Reporters and editors can't do an adequate job if they're relying on dwindling advertising funds to cover there expenses.

he move of advertising bucks to the Internet and the rise of the Internet as THE real-time news source that complements 24/7 cable news and talk radio addressing the issues of the day are making printed news just yesterdays news

BINGO! Also, newspapers are continuing to miss the boat. The local paper has started advertising that they have conservative columnists, including Coulter, George Will, and Cal Thomas. If I want to read them, though, I do it on the net. Does ANYBODY check the newspapers for stock reports anymore?

The newspapers will survive IF they develop a strong web presence and start concentrating on local coverage. Local papers will survive by covering local topics that aren't available on national sites. I don't need a local paper to read Reuters or AP stories.

Most of the journalism students I've talked to, though, don't want to be reporters. They want to be editorial writers. I understand this. Reporting is hard work. It involves going out and covering events, writing things down, getting names right. It's tough. Editorial writers never have to leave their comfy office, and they usually get paid better.

The Boston Globe arguably ranks as the most ignorant member of Olds Media. They apparently think that American soldiers in the Afghanistan and Iraq theaters wear standard issue tennis shoes, blue do-rags, and winter camouflage sans insignia. A couple of weeks after the Inet uncovers as a hoax stills of a pornography movie interspersed with Abu Ghraib pictures Boston Globe ignoramuses publish the following story about two morons still taking the hoax seriously.

In Texas, it's the Greensheet and the yellow book. They've taken almost all the classified ads, except for the big display ads for the car dealers. When we bought our house last summer, I did all my searching through the MLS on the net. It never even occurred to me to buy a newspaper.
