CHINA: The Changing Offshore Threat
Strategy Page ^ | 2006 Mar 28

China's Communist Party is using nationalism to distract Chinese concern for government corruption. But this is backfiring, especially when it comes to anti-Japanese attitudes. Japan is a major trading partner, and source of investment and technology. While Japan has armed forces only a tenth the size of China's 2.3 million troops, Japan's GDP is larger, and its military technology is far superior.

I would rather Japan's style of government dominate asia over the communist in china. Japan is a great ally and friend of the US and we must support her.

Basically, the (Taiwanese) legislators believe the U.S. Navy will defend Taiwan, so why spend the money?

Don't count it. Any of the leading rat pols, should one become President would likely tell the Taiwanese "good luck, you're on your own".

Yeah, and the US Navy hasn't had as few ships as it has now for years and years.

Someday China will technologically overcome it's fireworks mentality and they will have to be reckoned with.

I just got back from Taiwan and a lot of the people there do not believe that China will invade them. They told me that the people of China will revolt and overthrow the commies before they would invade Taiwan. There is no middle class in China and the poor will rise up against the elite. Where as the Taiwanese have adopted free enterprise and are doing great in industry and agriculture.

Sorry... ALL of our politicians would say that, democrat or republican. GWB has already told Taiwan they're pretty much on their own. Too much investment in China to risk it on Taiwan. Sorry Taiwan, we're throwing you under the bus.

Japan's economic revival the past year is mainly because of Chinese imports. That is fact, you can google it to confirm. Japanese investment in China is miniscule compared to HK, Taiwan, European or American investments in China. China pulls a deficit in trade with Japan right now.

This article is about as informative as the CIA Factbook. In fact all it did was quote data from the CIA Factbook and then speculate wildly without justification. It also assumes that there will be military conflict between China and Japan, which is ridiculous. Worse it assumes that China is the one more unreasonable in the current standoff, when in fact there are growing factions in the Japanese government who support a more concillatory approach to China (i.e., some Japanese politicians are distancing themselves from Koizumi's visits to Yasukuni Shrine, which holds class A war criminals).

There are more and more Japanese businessmen who are favoring a more pro-China stance as the economic relationship develops.

For policies that see our Naval ship status half of what it was under Reagan.

Media tycoon calls for clearer war apology
Friday, March 24, 2006 at 07:14 EST, Kyodo News

TOKYO — The head of the major Japanese daily Yomiuri Shimbun, Tsuneo Watanabe, on Thursday urged prime ministers of Japan to apologize for the nation's military aggression before and during World War II to neighboring countries in a clearer manner.

"It would be best for parliament to set up a standing committee on war responsibility and express its position," Watanabe said at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan, adding, "But if it cannot do that, a prime minister should say to foreign countries that Japan made such mistakes and apologize for them."

Do you know why he is saying this? Because Koizumi's repeated patronage to war criminals in Yasukuni Shrine is bad business for the Japanese. China, S Korea and Taiwan simply refuse to tolerate it, and it cools down business relationships significantly.

In other words, this standoff hurts and isolates Japan more, than it does China. The original article is so far off the mark it's almost satire.

China really would be ripe for a communist revolution if the communist party were not already in charge.

The gap between rich and poor is stunning. I have heard that the kind of socialist safety net that we have here in the US does not exist to the same extent in China.

The thing that bothers me is that China's aborting so many girl babies over the last twenty years or more is creating a surplus of young men.

What might a dictatorship do with so many excess young men?

Heck, they're as likely to invade a country to steal brides and concubines as to take land.

Or they (the surplus males) can go to foreign country like Canada, US, South Africa, Australia study hard, work hard and find wives there. In fact this is going on right now. Why must everything mean war?

Gotcha!

Yes, the ships are great, but they still can't be in more than one place at one time, ay?

How many attack subs based in the Pacific now? Twelve, thirteen, that many, less?

It's true that Japan relies partially on China for economy, but the uprise of India has attracted Japanese firms for India as an alternative. Japan has been very uneasy about the anti-Japanese protests that occured months ago in China, and a Japanese embassy staff suicide for threats from Chinese intelligence to share secrets. In polls months ago, more than half Japanese showed strong distrust towards Japan, even more than the US. The government of Japan has also been very uneasy about the territorial disputes of the Senkaku island claimed as China's territory, and the Okinotori island which China claimed as rock, and China's aggressiveness for drilling energy source at East China Sea which the government of Japan claimed the energy source also may be connected on the other side of the boundry. while there are groups within the Liberal Democratic Party that opposes the visit of the shrine, those people have likely become a minority since the last election. The factions are losing power, and coservative/right Abe Shinzo of the Mori faction is still popular by the people leading polls for who is favored to be the next Prime Minister. The strong anti-Japanese trends in china will probably continue to push both away, and Japan will continue to seek India as an alternative for investing. Any other questions, which I may help you with my background of study on East Asia?

The West has traditionally been monogamous but China has always been a polygamous society, with middle class men having multiple concubines. The emperors might have tens of thousands women in the harem at any time, so there has always been a shortage of women and it has never caused major problems...
