LOS ANGELES -- "Ice Age: The Meltdown" heated up the box office with a mammoth $70.5 million weekend, while audiences gave the cold shoulder to Sharon Stone, whose "Basic Instinct 2" debuted with a paltry $3.2 million.
"No one had any idea it would do this kind of business," said box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Exhibitor Relations, who expected the "Ice Age" sequel to debut in the $55 million range.
"The notion that people don't want to go to the movies is dispelled by something like this," he said. "It proves people will line up for the right movie if given the motivation."

Hollywood would be best to make family films again.
Hey, a patriotic film might be nice every once and awhile as well.
Sharon Stone isn't exactly the girl she was years ago. It makes me think of the upcoming Indiana Jones movie...stop and leave the legacy where it's at.
"It proves people will line up for the right movie if given the motivation."
Ya think?!?!?
And a fun, quality family product that doesn't insult the US or God.
Econ 101 -- meet the market.
I'd like to see more Revolutionary War era films.
Indy 4 will make a ton!
it seems hollywood is not about making money, that is almost a side issue. for them it seems much more important to flaunt their beliefs, their lifestyle, their social changes.
Parents like the idea of a family-safe film we can take the kids out to.
If we want to watch a film for ourselves, we generally just get the DVD.
So won't X-Men 3
"Indy 4 will make a ton!"
I'll wait till it's out on video.
Sharon Stone: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
What a b*tch.
My guess is xmen3 won't do as well Indy 4.
And that is your right. But Indy 4 will make a ton!
Sharon refuses to accept that she's not a sex kitten anymore. She's overdue for retirement from that kind of role
I think that sharon stoned has lost whatever sanity that she may have once had anyway.
At 14 years, they waited waaaay too long to make this sequel. The time when this movie could have been a success long since passed.
Ya' think Indy will still be fighting the Nazis 25 years after the first film came out?
I refuse to spend a dime on movies featuring loud mouthed leftists.
Hey Hollywood..keep alienating at least 1/2 of your market!!!
I'll see X Men 3.
I'll see X Men 3.
