The compromise wasn't really a compromise at all, because both bills were big on amnesty and weak on enforcement.

This morning, the Senate voted 38-60 against cloture on the Hagel-Martinez compromise, and 36-62 against cloture on the original Judiciary Committee bill - effectively killing both. The similar margins, the staffer says, "show you that the compromise didn't get us very far."

Okay, it's getting personal now. I'm in Virginia, right on the water, and I just saw a car with California plates and three potential illegals looking for construction work. They were asking people on the street where the work was!

Somehow, word has gotten out that contractors in Virginia are hiring illegals, because this isn't the first I've heard of it.

The immigration debate is really not a debate at all

It appears that our republic is in conflict. May I provide an excerpt of a letter:
"I am not a Know-Nothing. That is certain. How could I be? How can any one who abhors the oppression of negroes, be in favor of degrading classes of white people? Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that “all men are created equal.” We now practically read it “all men are created equal, except negroes.” When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read “all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and catholics.” When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty--to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy."

Mary will probably pass a day or two in Louisville in October. My kindest regards to Mrs. Speed. On the leading subject of this letter, I have more of her sympathy than I have of yours.

Heard a representative from ANSWER on Laura Ingraham's radio show the other day.

He said ANSWER split from the international communist movement some time ago, because ANSWER supported the Soviet takeover of Hungary in the late 60s, and also supports North Korea.

So here we have ANSWER supporting this illegal movement. How telling is that? The same group that supported the invasion of Hungary, and the NK regime, is working on this.
