Financial Times

WASHINGTON/TEHRAN: The US has prepared several plans to attack Iran since 2003, a former intelligence expert with the US military reported Sunday in the Washington Post.

According to security analyst William Arkin, the US Central Command has been devising war scenarios with Iran at least since May 2003, shortly after the US-led invasion of neighbouring Iraq.

One of the possible campaigns, entitled TIRANNT (theatre Iran near term) dealt with clash of US and Iranian ground troops, taking into account US experiences in its recent Iraq invasion, Arkin said.

In addition, the US drew up plans for missile attacks on Iran as well as held war games in cooperation with Britain "under a Caspian Sea scenario that could also pave the way for northern operations against Iran".

In response to reported US military threats, Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki said the US was not "in a position to start another regional crisis" due to its problematic involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I know theyre trying to draw us into a fight...

Yes they are. The question is, why.

I'm not necessarily saying that we shouldn't attack Iran. However the potential for serious retaliation against civilians on US soil does exist with these guys unlike with Iraq. That's assuming that they don't already have a nuke and the capability to lob one over the lower 48 and use it as a pulse weapon.

I am shocked by how many people keep rushing to microphones in an effort to limit our options. Looe lips sink ships.

Exactly. We have "contingency plans" for practically any situation.
I believe the Israelites will strike them next week. The Soviets did nothing when they hit Iraq, and the Russians will do nothing now.
(And if I'm wrong, there's always the 2000 year old `Armageddon Plan')

Lugar was mayor of Indianapolis when I was in college; made "history" letting IPD take cruisers home to "increase police presence"--

Thus in his two little gray cells simply HAVING troops in Iraq next door to Iran is an act of war.

The Iranians are only "a part of the energy picture" because pukes like Lugar won't drill ANWR and elsewhere, build refineries and atomic reactors, and generally put the nation's interests before their bribes.

If we only started planning in 2003, as this article suggests, I am deeply disappointed.

Which means either there is an agenda behind sensationalizing a routine military function ...or the reporter is just clueless.

Um...I would say...both.

Sounds to me like Lugar is afraid that Iran will play the Oil card. It just sickens me to think how many Senators and Congressmen think that this country is made up of a bunch of wusses who will just utterly freak out if we do have to face a hardship.

"The planning for the invasion of Iran should have started on November 4, 1979, and carried out the moment we had enough troops in the area. Obviously, the traitor Carter never was going to do that; however, Reagan should have bombed them back into the stone ages on January 21, 1981."

He would have, but they released the hostages on his way to take the oath. Remember, his campaign promise, 10 seconds after he took the oath, the whole world expected a certain aircraft carrier to start turning.

We would spend the next quarter of century paying for Jimmy Carter's gift to the Ayatollah.
