Forget the sewage spills, potholes and high prices. Honolulu has the best quality of life in the nation, according to a consulting firm's survey. Mercer Human Resource Consulting's worldwide survey ranked Honolulu 27th, two places down from last year's ranking but still good enough for best in the U.S. Zurich, Switzerland, was No. 1, while Baghdad, Iraq, was last of the more than 350 cities studied.
The company, which does the survey to help companies and governments place employees on international assignments, said the ranking is based on political, environmental, economic, education, safety, and other factors. ---- Star-Bulletin staff

Flags to be lowered for former police chief State flags will fly at half staff at all state and county buildings today from sunrise to sunset in honor of former Honolulu police chief and state Board of Education member Michael Nakamura. Nakamura died April 1. Services will be held today at the Mauka Chapel at Mililani Memorial Park & Mortuary in Waipio.
Popcorn mix to benefit March of Dimes Finance Factors is raising money for the annual March of Dimes WalkAmerica campaign by selling popcorn topping mix at all of its branches. Hawaiian Hurricane Popcorn mix, a local favorite of furikake, arare and butter, is being sold for $3. The company is also encouraging its employees and families to participate in the April 29 walk.
The March of Dimes raises money to support research and programs that would prevent birth defects, premature birth, low birth-weight and other threats to infant health.

EAST OAHU Police arrest girl, 16, in stolen car Police arrested a 16-year-old girl allegedly for driving a stolen car on Monday. A patrol officer spotted the girl at Sandy Beach Park in East Oahu about 6 p.m. and was informed by police dispatch that the vehicle had been reported stolen.
The officer stopped the vehicle and arrested the girl for investigation of auto theft. She was later released pending an investigation.
LEEWARD OAHU Woman flees car, reports sex assault A 42-year-old woman who had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted escaped her abductor by jumping out of a moving car, according to police. The woman had accepted an offer from a 51-year-old man for a ride to her relative's house in Waianae about 3:30 p.m. Monday, police said. Instead, the man drove her to a secluded area and fondled her along the way, police said.
The woman jumped from the vehicle as it slowed to turn around near Farrington Highway and Lualualei Homestead Road, police said. She then walked a short distance to the Waianae Police Station, where she reported the incident.
The man was later arrested for investigation of kidnapping and third-degree sexual assault.
Man held in damage to car in Waipahu Police arrested a 25-year-old man who allegedly smashed the front and back windshields of another man's car with a bat in Waipahu over the weekend. The man allegedly took the bat from the vehicle and began smashing the windshields while an 18-year-old woman was sitting in the passenger seat on Sunday. Police said she was struck by pieces of glass. He also allegedly threatened the 25-year-old owner of the bat and vehicle.
The man was arrested for investigation of first-degree criminal property damage, first-degree terroristic threatening and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.

As much as I love the Hawaiian islands, I have to say that this is just bunk.
Honolulu is not that desireable of a city. In fact, I'd rather live just about anywhere else in Hawaii than Honolulu. And I like cities.
It must be the clean unspoiled beaches along with the healthy water... ;-)
Or MA, or CA.
But Hawaii? Honolulu, even? Nice weather, nice place to visit especially in February, but...I must be missing something.

the traffic is terrible just about everywhere in Hawaii now , on every island. Hawaii needs to institute a 10 year moratorium on ALL new car and prohibit importing any privately as well . This is about the only way the insane automotive
pressure will ever abate . Certainly existing infastructure
cannot handle it now , much less ever more and more cars and trucks in the future.
Ok, so we stayed over at Waimanalo Bay (Bellows) but we had the BEST time. Every time. It was awesome. I'd dreamed of Hawaii all my life and then I got there, it was better than I ever imagined it would be. I didn't care for the crowds on Waikiki, we don't care for city life.
But oh my, the turquoise water, Hanaoma (sp?) Bay, honu, the soft sound of the sea at night.... i could live there and be happy. (and we never went in Feb)

I lived there for 3 years. The novelty and joy wore off after a few months. Honolulu is just another big city. Now, on the other islands ... life is good.

Bellows is the prettiest beach, and most tourists don't know about it ... which makes it all the better.

Actually, the second time we went, it was to see our first grandchildren. Identical twin boys. sigh. I held them for the entire two weeks! Again, who needed to drive anywhere? I was SO generous, i just told son/dil "you go ahead, I'll watch the babies for you" snicker snicker. They actually THANKED me. heeheehee
My son/dil lived there for 3.5. I just want a chance to see if I could be happy there for 3 years....pleeeeeeze just let me have a chance! :D

I was on Wi Ki Ki in September and I can tell you my quality of life was pretty damn good. I mean the Hilton Resort is awesome. I was able to go to a luau, saw the Arizona, pineapple valley, etc. However, never did actually go into Honolulu. I think areas like where I was is why they ranked so high and ignored the city.
Based on other "quality of life" discussions here, the consensus will be that the best place to live is where you can golf comfortably in March, house lots are at least one acre, your neighbors value the 2nd Amendment, and in 10 years you can move 10 miles further out into the country. All else is trivial.
I guess it would be, if you were a surfer, which I am. I have no desire to live there.
I don't miss Hawaii at all.
