Bush to Speak About Immigration on Monday , 5/15/06

WASHINGTON - President Bush plans to address the nation Monday night on the immigration debate, trying to build momentum for legislation that could provide millions of illegal immigrants a chance to become American citizens.

The White House said it was seeking time from television networks for the president's remarks.

"This is crunch time," Tony Snow, the new White House press secretary said Friday at his first off-camera, or informal, briefing.

On Thursday, Senate leaders reached a deal to revive a broad immigration bill that had appeared doomed just several weeks ago.

Key to the agreement is who will be negotiating a compromise with the House, which last December passed an enforcement-only bill that would subject the estimated 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States to felony charges as well as deportation.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said the Senate will send 14 Republicans and 12 Democrats to negotiate with the House, with seven of the Republicans and five Democrats coming from the Judiciary Committee. The remaining seven Republicans will be chosen by Frist and remaining seven Democrats chosen by Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

Unfortunately, a mostly great President, instead of giving an address to the nation, needs to listen to an address of The People and why we won't go along with another Amnesty Program - it is a never ending saga of give away of our rights.

I think all the negative nabobs on this thread should shut their traps until they hear what the President has to say. The scuttlebutt is that the President has heard our complaints, and intends to propose that no worker program will be implemented until the borders are certified as secured.

Pukin, these anti-Bush folks are a one note orchestra. They've got nothing important to say even when they aren't bitching and whining.

What's going on? This passed LAST DECEMBER?

WHY isn't it being enforced NOW as well as the rest of our arsenal of LAWS that don't allow ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS?

How many laws do we need?

ENFORCE THEM.

It's ILLEGAL to be here without proper paperwork. If they want to be citizens they can go through the LEGAL process just like the rest of us and our relatives did.

1. Amesty in any form is still unacceptable under the rule of law.
2. Talk is cheap - I'll believe it when I see it, six months till election day.....tick tock - tick tock

(nice use of "negative nabobs" ! a throw-back to the nixon administration!)

I doubt that very much, although I'd be delighted to see it happen. I'll check in on this thread to eat crow if he does announce a no-wiggle-room policy of border control.

I wonder if this'll manage to drive GWB's approval ratings even lower if some number of Republicans who now associate amnesty with the Democrats realize that's what GWB also wants. The biggest irony here is that the 1/3 of voters who still support GWB are the most conservative, and so they're all but interchangable with the 1/3 of voters who most strongly oppose amnesty. The other 2/3 are hardly likely to switch to approval of GWB because of this, so all I see is downside from a political viewpoint.

Only if they can't bring in grandma and grandpa, and the 55 cousins, and their dependents and so on ad infinitum.
That won't happen, so it's better to drop the whole idea.

A worker program does not have to mean amnesty. Why not just wait and hear what the man has to say? Or are you just a Democrat in FReeper clothing?

Sunny Colorado. Taking the kids four wheeling in my new Jeep. We're going to try a little gold panning. Nothing like a little mountain air to purge some of the poison posted on this site lately.

I can see Tony's hand painted all over this... It's smart to address an issues like this instead of hiding under the bed. Way to go Tony!

However... please let the president know that "Immigration reform" begins with SECURING THE BORDER FIRST... Then we can consider the problem at hand This picture to "illustrate" the point :)
