The First Entirely Positive,“How do we Help Solve the Illegal Immigration Problem?" Thread
5.12.06 | ohioWfan

Posted on 05/12/2006 5:47:27 PM PDT by ohioWfan

I’m going to try something entirely new to Free Republic………..start a thread restricted to practical, positive. pro-active things that this huge forum filled with good people who love this country can actually DO about helping to solve the illegal immigration problem, and how we can ‘encourage’ our leaders at all levels to get their acts together.

This is not a thread for venting or attacking (Heaven knows, that‘s been done plenty around here!). Let’s keep it entirely positive……..no attacks on the President and ‘Bushbots’ or the GOP………or on each other, from EITHER side. No threats to ’kick the GOP bums out’ …….we all know that the risk of having Dems in power is too great for that irresponsible threat. NO name-calling from EITHER side……..’Jorge‘ and ‘El Presidente‘ both qualify as disrespectful name-calling. (Perhaps we can all just ignore anyone who tries to turn this into a hostile thread, and punch the abuse button, but NOT engage in battle with him/her). Disagree, but be respectful about it.

What we really need are practical things we can do……with links to key Senate and Congressional offices, the White House, as well as STATE and LOCAL government offices, examples of THOUGHTFUL and POSITIVE letters to our leaders that will actually be read, and responded to. Phone numbers, and ideas for THOUGHTFUL and POSITIVE phone calls to leaders. What we also need are specific PRAYER requests for you, so that those of us who believe that our God is the God of the impossible can be on our knees in prayer for the details of this immense problem. We need fervent prayer for the President and Congress, as well as our State and Local authorities. And we need Freeper creativity!

We are LEGION, and together, I believe we can make a difference in moving this engine down the track more rapidly.

There are people who are very angry with the President and the Republicans in Congress, and people who still respect and admire the President greatly, and are angry with the Republicans in Congress……..and even some who are NOT angry with the Republicans in Congress (OK……..maybe not..... :)………..but we ALL want to end this invasion, and help our brothers and sisters in the Southwest to have their safe and normal lives return, and prevent the invasion from moving further.

Those of us outside the region may not understand what things are like, but we want to, so if those of you in the affected states could give us more details about how bad this is, without belittling us because we don’t live there, it would be much appreciated. We know it‘s bad, and we care about it, even though we cannot fully appreciate it from where we sit.

There is a great work force of pro-Bush people out in freeper lurker land who have been shoved out of the discussion by bashers. There are lots of us who want to know what’s going on, but wouldn’t go on a standard immigration thread if our lives depended on it, because the disdain for us there is palpable. We may agree with the idea of a guest worker program, or we may not, but we don‘t want to be labeled just because our ideas are different.

So…… LET US HELP YOU, PLEASE! We are activists, and we are willing to work.

Tell us what we can do. Let’s band together on this important issue to do whatever we can do to put pressure on Congress, the White House, state and local governments………polite, respectful pressure……….as well as encouraging them when they do make good decisions, and see what happens.

What do you think? Can we be pro-active and actually get something done? Can we discuss this without rancor, but with the common goal in mind to rescue our beloved country from invasion?

If you think so, please ping those who will, without personal attacks, tell us their stories, and let us get involved in getting something done. This thread is not to place blame, but to come up with solutions.

This is America………..and we are Freepers! Let’s ROLL!

Haven't seen any helmets, shields, swords, breastplates there, etc. but there's a section I don't bother with...perhaps they're in it ??? (Ok, did you start this or did I?)

I think you're right, txr.

Just saw this article. IMHO the Dims and illegals are going to have a more difficult time calling those who want no amnesty and more border controls 'racists' after this (though, I suspect they'll overlook it and find a way):

Hispanic American Coalition Tells Frist No to Amnesty

(CNSNews.com) - A coalition of Hispanic Americans is teaming up with U.S. House leaders in sending a letter to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) to express their opposition to legislation that would grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. The coalition, called You Don't Speak for Me!, was formed after the recent demonstrations by illegal aliens and their supporters who want the government to grant them amnesty. "When it comes to immigration policy, the United States Senate apparently doesn't speak for anyone, except the people who have broken our laws and cheap labor business interests," retired Col. Al Rodriguez said in a press release. "National polls - especially those done after the May 1 illegal alien protests and boycott - show that an overwhelming majority of Americans oppose the kind of amnesty being promoted by the Senate and the White House. That opposition includes millions of Americans who are of Hispanic heritage," said Rodriguez, whose coalition plans to hold a press conference on Tuesday at 2:30pm in the Cannon House Office Building

"Also, the demonization of business on the extreme right has to stop.

Farmers and contractors are not evil."

Certainly, being a farmer or a contractor doesn't necessarily mean someone is evil. However, knowingly employing illegals is, in fact, a crime. People who knowingly and willfully commit criminal acts are certainly not choirboys.

You might not like the term "evil," but it's not necessarily an unfair label.

1. One year mandatory federal prison sentence for anyone caught employing an illegal (but, to be positive, we'll smile when we lock them up)

2. One year mandatory federal prison sentence for anyone caught providing any taxpayer-funded services to an illegal (but, we'll smile when we lock them up)

3. Execute anyone caught transporting drugs across our borders (but, we'll make sure the executioner smiles when he pulls the switch)

Did I detect a note of sarcasm in that post, Raven?

Did you forget to add the tags, or are you dismissing this entire thread and it's pro-active thrust?

House wants to change 'felony' to a 'misdemeanor'

Can anyone elaborate on this?

I'd want to know more about it. If it in anyway takes the "teeth" out of enforcement or makes it little more then a slap on the wrist. I am vehemently against doing this.

... raise legal immigration to 3 million per year.

"From where?", I asked.

You don't seem to want to answer that so I will make a proprosal.

Here is what I proprose then. Since we have an estimated 11 million illegals here now, most of whom (I'll say 8 million) are from Mexico/Central America/South America (M/CA/SA) and we assume the rest are from other parts of the world, we need to balance that out? Right? That leaves a differential of 8 million.

So. First, we secure our southern border and northern border. Then, taking up to 3 million legal immigrants, who meet our qualifications, per year from these other ethnic regions around the world. (Note: we are not taking 3 million each, but a total of three million each year till they reach that 8 million goal per ethinc region):

1. The European Union/Great Britain

2. Eastern Europe

3. Russia/The Balkan States

4. China

5. Western Asia

6. Southern Asia

7. The Middle East

8. The African Tribal Nations

9. South Africa

10. New Zealand/Australia/South Pacific

11. The Eskimo/Aleut/Northern Peoples

12. The Carribean

That's the best I can come up with. Any more?

In the meantime (you knew there was one of those, didn't you?) we put a moratorium on immigration from the M/CA/SA region until that quota of 8 million from each of those other regions is met bringing in a limit of 3 million per year regardless of the makeup.

That means we have to bring in 96 million from those other 12 regions. Dividing that by 3 million means that the moratorium on the M/CA/SA region would last 32 years.

I could go for that.

It seems to me, that businesses with a "need" for guest workers could submit a request for them(that might include ILLEGALS already working for them since they know their work history.) Everyone else can be fair game for deportation. Businesses that hire ILLEGALS under the table would be subject to fines that would literally bankrupt them.

'Strong border security,' no felonies, led to waves of public protests
Houston Chronicle Washington Bureau ^ | April 12, 2006 | GEBE MARTINEZ and SAMANTHA LEVINE

Posted on 04/12/2006 7:02:52 AM PDT by Dubya

WASHINGTON - After the widespread marches in support of illegal immigrants, top Republican congressional leaders retreated Tuesday from the portion of a House bill that would make illegal immigration or visa violation a felony.

"It remains our intent to produce a strong border security bill that will not make unlawful presence in the United States a felony," House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee said.

Their joint written statement came as GOP leaders seek a balance between easing public criticism of the bill and preserving the law-and-order approach to illegal immigration as demanded by many social conservatives.

A felony charge would subject illegal immigrants — there are about 12 million in the United States — to a year in jail before deportation. It would also apply to students, tourists and others who overstay their visas.

We've started having home invasions up here as well, something very rare for our small town. All of us in AZ are paying through the nose for our theft and non-insured motorist insurance.

BTW, how many 'safe' houses have they raided in the Phoenix or Yuma area in the past few weeks? I've lost count. We had one only a couple of blocks from us. When we had neighborhoood watch meeting, with the local police, several people pressed on the activities at that house and the office said: It's a drop house for illegals...

Police knew, but let it continue until last Memorial Day weekend when they raided that house and four others in an early morning, planned, raid with help from surrounding communities SWAT. Most police departments in small towns are not equiped to handle the influx of problems this is bringing.

I agree that the laws must be enforced, but the first step is a mental alignment.
We - and Mexico - must agree that the two countries are separate entities; that the border is a real and defined geographic, cultural, linguistic, economic, and political boundary; and that no right exists either in law or fact to cross the border without the consent of the government of either state.

I saw an interview with Sheriff Joe yesterday and he said that after the first couple of days the numbers of people they were locating in the desert was dwindling. He felt the Mexican Government had gotten the message out to avoid Maricopa County and they were going around his territory.

If true, then this proves that vigerous surveilance and enforcement does work.

It's a darned shame that once, beautiful and safe neighborhoods now sit vulnerable to this plague.

I agree. Once upon a time there used to be those few "rough" areas, and if you avoided them, all was well.

Not anymore, they have spread like a malignant disease. And if you are not directly in one, you are still a target because their spawn will come into your neighborhood, and take what doesn't belong to them.

Thank goodness for our neighborhood watch programs. When it comes right down to it, we need to open our windows, sit on the porch a little more often, and look after each other these days.

I'm very impressed with him, a true conservative, unlike our current governor. I can't understand why we aren't seeing ads for him -- or the gov -- yet.... the anti-Kyl ads started early and I think he was taken off balance a bit and after a couple of weeks with his lead dropping he started running ads to hit back.

Pederson (wealthy businessman) has been running his ads with outright lies about Kyl -- actually putting McCain's words and immigration bill into Kyl's mouth (so to speak) and then trying to say how 'independent' a democrat he is and how HE will do something about the borders, etc..

Anyone who thinks the dems are not going to run on the border issue should listen to these ads...

This is good news, because Phoenix is a major staging area for shipment out to other areas of the country. Both drugs and human cargo.

This just went into effect a couple of days ago. I'll be interested in the statistics in the next few weeks/months.

I hope the other sheriff's in the surrounding counties take notice, and enforce our State law.

"The ACLU is playing it's usual deceit game."

So are the Dims, and, they will continue to do so.
Rush already mentioned in the past few months that we should just adopt Dingy Harry's immigration proposal from about 1993 (Harry Reid has done a complete 180 on his thoughts from back then, and, of course whitewashed it - - my guess is that if Bubba had been in office and wanted it, he would support it now.

Of course, Howard Dean read the polls and came out last week and said we needed to get tough on border security.

It's been in the news today that the Pres is going to talk about sending troops to the border Mon night (stories last week were on the Pentagon asking the House to pass a bill allowing them to do just that and the House passing said bill). While the stories on the Pres's speech are the usual 'sources say' and I'm not sure anyone knows for sure what the Pres is going to say, Hill and Chuckie have again read the polls and have already come out today, trying to steal a little of the President's thunder and look 'tough' on Nat'l security (I suppose they'll still find a way to pander to the Hispanic community) (see the article below - I hope Chuckie doesn't trip over anything running to the microphones). How do they know Bush is sending NG to the border (though it might be a good assumption) and how do they know he's going to say no guns? If the troops are armed, are they going to say "Glad he listened to us"??

Bottom line is the Pubbies need to listen to this base and also get on top and out in front of this issue NOW and NOT let the Dims, who have been dragging their feet, pandering to unions and the Hispanics, and previously blocking discussions and amendments in the Senate take this issue over.

Hillary Clinton, Charles Schumer Nix Border Security Bill

New York's two senators, Hillary Clinton and Charles Schumer - who have been complaining since the London bombing attacks that the federal government hasn't done enough to protect the U.S. from terrorists - voted against legislation to enhance border security on Thursday.

Clinton and Schumer turned thumbs down on two amendments to a Department of Homeland Security spending bill, which, according to the Washington Times, would have funded plans for 2,000 new Border Patrol agents and more than 5,000 new detention beds to house illegal aliens.

SCHUMER, CLINTON WANT TO ARM NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS ON THE BORDER
SCHUMER Press Release ^ | Senator Charles E. Schumer

Posted on 05/12/2006 8:32:41 PM PDT by kellynla

US Senators Charles E. Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton today joined the Senate's National Guard Caucus – comprised of almost 60 of their Senate colleagues – in asking President Bush to arm the National Guard troops recently deployed to the nation's borders.

As part of its efforts to beef up security along the borders, the Administration deployed National Guard troops on an interim basis to assist Border Patrol, INS and Customs agents but did not arm them. In a letter to the President, the Senators asked the Bush Administration to reverse its decision to bar National Guard personnel from carrying sidearms for strictly protective purposes.

"Until we can get a permanent staff in place that meets the border's long-term security and commercial needs, we'll need to rely on the National Guard to help process the cargo and tourists going in and out of the country," Schumer said. "The men and women who comprise the National Guard force at the border are making some real sacrifices to protect all of us. The very least that we can do is make sure that they can protect themselves."

"Having the National Guard at our borders without guns is a recipe for potential disaster. They are literally at the front lines of our homeland defense and leaving them unprotected would be a real dereliction of duty. They are our National Guard -- we shouldn't let them become targets of opportunity for those who would do them harm," Clinton said.

The following is a copy of the Senators' letter:

"We are writing about the recent interagency agreement on the activation of 1700 members of the National Guard to serve on the nation's border, which bars these highly-trained men and women from carrying firearms for protection. We think this decision places them in grave danger unnecessarily.
